[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

Wings: twos, threes and fours

Abstract
Examples of multiple pairs of appendages (wings and legs) in the creation of Allah.

Full Text

All praises (be) to Allah, Originator (of) the heavens and the earth, (Who) makes the Angels messengers having wings two or three or four. He increases in the creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.
[Al-Quran 35:1]

As can be seen from the various translations of the ayat, at the link above, some have translated it as two, three or four wings, while others have translated it as so many pairs of wings. Q6:38 uses the term بِجَنَاحَيْهِ to refer to that which the birds fly with. However, أَجْنِحَةٍ doesn't necessarily limit to the meaning of wings, as the same root (jīm nūn ḥā (ج ن ح)) is also used to refer to a part of the human body: Q20:22 and Q28:32 use جَنَاحِكَ to refer to, most probably, the natural space between the upper arm and the upper side of the ribcage, which forms a natural pocket. In Surah alQasas, when Moses received the miracle of his hand turning 'white without disease', he was told to draw his arm close to himself from fear: a general self-hugging posture of folded arms assumed when people are scared; also Q17:24 commands the believers to lower in humility جَنَاحَ in mercy towards their parents; Q15:88 and Q26:215 command to lower جَنَاحَكَ for the believers.

Scientists classify wing as a type of fin. It is theorised that the appendages of land creatures also evolved from fins.  The wings and legs of insects are genetically similar in origin and, according to emerging studies, scientists believe, evolved from crustacean leg segments. The Quran tells us that:

Do not see those who disbelieved that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, then We parted them and We made from [the] water every living thing? Then will not they believe?
[Al-Quran 21:30]

In the creation of Allah several examples of winged creatures exist. The Quran itself mentions some of these winged creatures, such as hoopoe, raven, mosquito, honeybee, housefly, ant. In fact, it states:

Indeed, Allah (is) not ashamed to set forth an example (like) even (of) a mosquito and (even) something above it. Then as for those who believed, [thus] they will know that it (is) the truth from their Lord. And as for those who disbelieved [thus] they will say what (did) intend Allah by this example? He lets go astray by it many and He guides by it many. And not He lets go astray by it except the defiantly disobedient.
[Al-Quran 2:26

Rather, each and every creation of Allah is a marvel in itself, and worthy of admiration:

O mankind! Is set forth an example, so listen to it. Indeed, those whom you invoke besides Allah will never create a fly even if they gathered together for it. And if snatched away from them the fly a thing not they (could) take it back from it. So weak (are) the seeker and the one who is sought.
[Al-Quran 22:73

Birds typically have a pair of legs and a pair of wings, while insects usually have three pairs of legs, and two pairs of wings. Counting the wings and legs both as أَجْنِحَةٍ, the following are some examples of creatures with multiple appendages:

One Pair of Wings & Three Pairs of Legs
Mosquitoes, houseflies, and other true flies also display one pair of wings, though they also have a pair of halteres to help them balance in flight.

Two Pairs of Wings & Three Pairs of Legs
Butterflies and most other insects usually have two pairs of wings. Fossils of ancient birds have also been discovered who used to have two pairs of wings.

...
Then, in 2003, the prolific Chinese dinosaur-hunter Xing Xu found an actual four-winged dinosaur. He called it Microraptor gui. Xu saw the outlines of feathers clearly splaying from the creature’s legs as well as its arms. These were clearly traces of long, flat and asymmetric plumes, much like those that keep today’s flying birds aloft. While it lived, Microraptor probably looked like a starling wearing flares. Xu suggested that it may have used its leg wings to help it glide, while others later suggested that it could have flown like a biplane.
Xu went on to find other dinosaurs with long leg feathers, such as Anchiornis, Pedopenna and Xiaotingia. For a time, it looked like these feathers disappeared before true birds arrived on the scene, but Xu is now back with 11 new fossils that discount that idea.
The specimens include species like Sapeornis, Confuciusornis, Cathayornis, and Yanornis.
All of them are early birds, perched on primitive branches of the group’s family tree. All of them lived in China during the Cretaceous period. And all of them had four wings, with long feathers on their legs.
You can see them in the images throughout this post—dark shadows protruding from the bones of the lower leg. In some of the specimens, the leg feathers show a stiff, curved central rod (or “rachis”) with symmetrical vanes sticking out from either side. They protrude from the bones at right angles and seem to form a large flat surface.

Three Pairs of Wings & Three Pairs of Legs
Treehoppers are a curious yet fascinating form of insects, who have three pairs of wings.

Excerpt from Insects with three pairs of wings?
...
To tackle the question of body plan evolution we are studying a group of insects, the treehoppers (Membracidae), which, we submit, have evolved a novel thoracic appendage, and thereby depart from the typical winged insect body plan. The presence of dorsal flight appendages on the second (T2) and third (T3) thoracic segments is a hallmark of the winged insects body plan. Treehoppers, in addition to T2 and T3 wings, have acquired a novel dorsal structure named the helmet, which derives from the T1 segment. In order to trace the evolutionary origin of the helmet, we have gathered anatomical and gene expression data describing the formation of this morphological novelty. Anatomical observations show that the helmet is a dorsal appendage, rather than a mere extension of the T1 segment, and that it shares multiple structural similarities with wings. Furthermore, the helmet’s development uses the same genetic programme that underlies the patterning of wings. Altogether our data indicates that the helmet is a fused pair of modified wings on T1, making the treehoppers the only known group of extant insects equipped with three pairs of wings, and therefore a derived body plan.

Four and More
Other than insects, there exist other creatures with three pairs of legs but no wings. Moreover,  the arachnids, crustaceans and myriapods also have segmented bodies with several paired appendages. Octopus, squids and nautilus are yet other examples of creatures with multiple appendages. Crabs have five pairs of appendages, as do crayfish, lobsters, shrimps, and other decapods.

The above examples are but just a few from the world we can see, which is actually a tiny portion of the observable electromagnetic spectrum. There may be many other creatures that we cannot even see. Who knows how they are made. And then there is the unobservable dark matter and dark energy, which scientists assume constitutes the majority of the Universe, but which we cannot even perceive. We believe in the angels, even though we do not see or perceive them.

Separate in Space

Allah (is) the One Who raised the heavens without pillars that you see, then He established on the Throne and subjected the sun and the moon each running for a term appointed, He arranges the matter; He details the Signs so that you may in the meeting (with) your Lord believe with certainty.
[Al-Quran 13:2]

Surah alFussilat (Explained in Detail) explains the condition of space at the time of creation as smoke:

Then He directed (Himself) towards the heaven while it (was) smoke, and He said to it and to the earth, "Come both of you willingly or unwillingly." They both said, "We come willingly."
[Al-Quran 41:11

The Sun and Moon are examples of how each object in space exists separately, without the need to be attached to anything; yet the synchronised movements orchestrated by Allah benefit us on Earth:

And of His Signs (are) the night and the day and the sun and the moon. (Do) not prostrate to the sun and not to the moon, but prostrate to Allah the One Who created them, if you, Him alone, worship.
[Al-Quran 41:37]

Clouds are an example of how something heavy can exist without pillars:

Indeed, in (the) creation (of) the heavens and the earth, and alternation of the night and the day, and the ships which sail in the sea with what benefits [the] people, and what (has) sent down Allah from the sky [of] water, giving life thereby (to) the earth after its death, and dispersing therein [of] every moving creature, and directing (of) the winds and the clouds [the] controlled between the sky and the earth, surely (are) Signs for a people who use their intellect.
[Al-Quran 2:164]

Birds are yet another example:

Do not they see towards the birds controlled in the midst (of) the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed, in that (are) Signs for a people who believe.
[Al-Quran 16:79

Do not they see [to] the birds above them spreading (their wings) and folding? Not holds them except the Most Gracious. Indeed, He (is) of every thing All-Seer.
[Al-Quran 67:19

Surah Fatir informs us that:

Indeed, Allah upholds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease.
And if they should cease, not can uphold them any one after Him.
Indeed, He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
[Al-Quran 35:41]

Surah Fatir introduces Allah as the Fatir (فَاطِرِ) of the heavens and earth:

All praises (be) to Allah, Separator (of) the heavens and the earth, (Who) makes the Angels messengers having wings two or three or four. He increases in the creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.
[Al-Quran 35:1; Translation edited (in italics)]

Revisiting Surah alFussilat (Explained in Detail), we read:

Then He directed (Himself) towards the heaven while it (was) smoke, and He said to it and to the earth, "Come both of you willingly or unwillingly." They both said, "We come willingly."
Then He completed them (as) seven heavens in two periods and He revealed in each heaven its affair. And We adorned the heaven, [the world] with lamps and (to) guard. That (is the) Decree (of) the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.
[Al-Quran 41:11-12

In Surah alMulk (The Kingdom), we read:

The One Who created seven heavens one above another. Not you see in (the) creation (of) the Most Gracious any fault. So return the vision, can you see any flaw?
Then return the vision twice (again). Will return to you the vision humbled while it (is) fatigued.
And certainly We have beautified the heaven nearest with lamps, and We have made them (as) missiles for the devils, and We have prepared for them punishment (of) the Blaze.
And for those who disbelieved in their Lord (is the) punishment (of) Hell, and wretched is the destination.
[Al-Quran 67:3-6]

Note: فُطُورٍ in Q67:3 is variously translated as rifts, cracks, breaks, etc. as it shares the same root as فَاطِرِ in Q35:1, the translation of which I have edited above as Separator.

So, the Earth was separated from the skies, and is now lying somewhere in the space within the Sky of the Earth, while the Sky borders the edge of space. As we really cannot determine the edge of space, whatever direction we try to look in, there is no way of knowing whether we are in the centre or or how far away from it. What we do know of the observable universe is that there are stars, planets, comets, asteroids, meteors, and so on, each moving through the space between our Earth and our Sky. The Earth has been hit by comets and asteroids; meteorites, meteor showers and cosmic dust are a common phenomenon; megacryometeors have fallen from cloudless skies ... ; so yes, the sky does indeed seem guarded from those who dwell upon this Earth, such that the mischief and corruption is contained here, and is not allowed to ascend to the sky.

The last ayat of Surah alFussilat also informs us that:

Unquestionably, they (are) in doubt about (the) meeting (with) their Lord? Unquestionably, indeed, He (is) of all things encompassing.
[Al-Quran 41:54]

The picture that seems to form in my mind is concentric spheres of the seven skies (heavens) above our Earth, and the Throne of Allah above it, such that He is encompassing it all, in personal real-time knowledge, and through his government, and absolutely, perhaps in a literal sense as well. After all, Surah azZumar does give us an idea of the relative size:

And not they appraised Allah (with) true appraisal, while the earth entirely (will be) in His Grip (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection, and the heavens (will be) folded in His Right Hand. Glory be to Him! And High is He above what they associate (with Him).
[Al-Quran 39:67

When it is Allah who invents, creates, separates and sustains everything and everyone, then it is His decree that we should follow in all matters. The Quran defines the correct religion as:

The Language of The Birds

...  He has commanded that you worship not except Him. ... [Q12:40]

Abstract
The Quran mentions the language of the birds. Scientists are discovering genetic commonalities in human and bird speech and language development.
Birds and snakes emerge in many mythologies as sacred and as symbols of power. All power belongs to Allah and he bestows power on whom He wills. So, from being revered as sacred in non-Abrahamic religions, the birds and snakes came under the command of the Jewish King Solomon, and became soldiers in his army.
The Bani Israel are under a ratified covenant. So, it is not surprising that early in The Quran, right after the story of Adam, the Bani Israel are reminded of their covenant.

Full Text

And Solomon inherited David. He said, "O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is evident bounty."
[Al-Quran 27:16, Translation: Sahih International]

The Quran mentions the language of the birds. It can be observed that the birds sing and they also speak with each other. Some birds, for example parrots, can learn human words, and some humans, for example villagers of Kusköy, Turkey, can whistle and communicate with each other like birds (links below). However, the rare ability mentioned by Prophet-King Solomon in Q27:16 was their ability to have meaningful conversations with birds. Solomon even had birds serving in his army:

And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers of the jinn and men and birds, and they were [marching] in rows.
[Al-Quran 27:17, Translation: Sahih International]

Surah anNaml also records the inspection of the troops, potential court-martial, and the subsequent conversation between Solomon, the Commander, and his soldier, The Hoopoe

And he inspected the birds and said, "Why not I see the hoopoe or is he from the absent?
I will surely punish him (with) a punishment severe or I will surely slaughter him unless he brings me a reason clear."
So he stayed not long, and he said, "I have encompassed that which not you have encompassed it, and I have come to you from Saba with news certain.
Indeed, I found a woman ruling them and she has been given of every thing and for her (is) a throne great.
And I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah, and has made fair-seeming to them the Shaitaan their deeds, and averted them from the Way, so they (are) not guided,
That not they prostrate to Allah, the One Who brings forth the hidden in the heavens and the earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare,
Allah (there is) no god but He, (the) Lord (of) the Throne the Great."
He said, "We will see whether you speak (the) truth or you are of the liars.
Go with my letter, this, and deliver it to them. Then turn away from them and see what they return."

Curiously, the Hoopoe nestlings are also found to be able to make hissing sounds like snakes. In fact many other birds are also known to be able to make hissing sounds. This is interesting in the context that both birds and jinns (snakes) were serving in Solomon's army! Moreover, snakes and birds also feature as symbols of power in Ancient Egypt and prior civilisations.

Solomon was the heir of David, from the tribe of Bani Israel (children of Israel), who had been led across the sea by Moses when Allah rescued them from the Pharaoh. Thereafter, they were given The Book, and a covenant was ratified with them.

David & The Birds
Regarding the Prophet-King David, where we read about the great grace bestowed on him, we find the mention of the birds:

And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron,
[Al-Quran 34:10, Translation: Sahih International]

Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allah ].
Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [ Allah ] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.
And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating [praises].
And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.
[Al-Quran 38:17-20, Translation: Sahih International]

Communities & Communication
Every creature is organised in communities, and everything communicates!

And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
[Al-Quran 6:38, Translation: Sahih International]

Genetic Findings
Scientists are discovering genetic commonalities in human and bird speech and language development. The expression of FOXP2 is mentioned frequently in many reports.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOXP2:
Forkhead box protein P2 (FOXP2) is a protein that, in humans, is encoded by the FOXP2 gene, also known as CAGH44, SPCH1 or TNRC10, and is required for proper development of speech and language. The gene is shared with many vertebrates, where it generally plays a role in communication (for instance, the development of bird song).
...
Differences between song-learning and non-song-learning birds have been shown to be caused by differences in FOXP2 gene expression, rather than differences in the amino acid sequence of the FOXP2 protein.

Mythology
Many mythologies mention human-bird conversations.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_of_the_birds:
In mythology, medieval literature and occultism, the language of the birds is postulated as a mystical, perfect divine language, green language, adamic language, Enochian, angelic language or a mythical or magical language used by birds to communicate with the initiated. ...
... In Egyptian Arabic, hieroglyphic writing is called "the alphabet of the birds".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoopoe#Relationship_with_humans
...
Hoopoes are distinctive birds and have made a cultural impact over much of their range. They were considered sacred in Ancient Egypt, and were "depicted on the walls of tombs and temples". At the Old Kingdom, the hoopoe was used in the iconography as a symbolic code to indicate the child was the heir and successor of his father. ...

Covenant, Leadership & Power
Birds and snakes emerge in many mythologies as sacred and as symbols of power. All power belongs to Allah and he bestows power on whom He wills. After the destruction of the ancient mighty civilisations, the last of whom was Ancient Egypt, the Bani Israel were tested with kingdom and leadership. So, from being revered as sacred in non-Abrahamic religions, the birds and snakes came under the command of the Jewish King Solomon, and became soldiers in his army. To put it in another way, from human subservience to Satan, in a reversal of roles, the Allah-fearing human came to rule over everyone else on Earth.

The Quran mentions this fact as:

We verily gave Moses the Scripture; so be not ye in doubt of his receiving it; and We appointed it a guidance for the Children of Israel.
And when they became steadfast and believed firmly in Our revelations, We appointed from among them leaders who guided by Our command.
Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ.
Is it not a guidance for them (to observe) how many generations We destroyed before them, amid whose dwelling places they do walk? Lo! therein verily are portents! Will they not then heed?
Have they not seen how We lead the water to the barren land and therewith bring forth crops whereof their cattle eat, and they themselves? Will they not then see?
And they say: When cometh this victory (of yours) if ye are truthful?
Say (unto them): On the day of the victory the faith of those who disbelieve (and who then will believe) will not avail them, neither will they be reprieved.
So withdraw from them (O Muhammad), and await (the event). Lo! they (also) are awaiting (it).
[Al-Quran 32:23-30, Translation: Pickthall]

The Bani Israel are under a ratified covenant. So, it is not surprising that early in The Quran, right after the story of Adam, the Bani Israel are reminded of their covenant:

Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me.
And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me.
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

All Creatures Form Communities

The Holy Quran, Chapter: 6 Verse: 38
Sahih International: And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.
Pickthall: There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like unto you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.

Interpretation

The Qur’an states that all animals, including birds, are ‘ummamun’ [i.e. are communities / people / nations], like humans. As science continues to investigate, we continue to discover that a number of animals exhibit various aspects of social living: communication, cognition, memory,  organization and division of labour, family units, love and affection, mating and divorce,  friendship, cheating, deception and altruism, and so on. Not only have these traits been observed in larger animals, but also at the microscopic level, where unicelluar amoebas have also been found to communicate, unite and organize into a multicellular cooperative!   Following are but some links to the wondrous discoveries about our world:
