Disease & Cure

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

And when I am ill, then He cures me, 

[Al-Quran 26:80] 

  

The Quran narrates some specific diseases and cases – in some cases, appropriate means of cure are provided; whereas in some other cases no details are provided, the person is simply informed that its easy for Allah. The reader is exhorted to adopt deen-e-haneef, inclining to the right. The womb must be guarded. The Quran also deals with the subjects of life extension, immortality and death.    

All humans are susceptible to diseases, regardless of whether they are believers or not, or which religion they follow. Some people are born with health challenges, others fall ill sometime or the other during their lives; some recover soon, for some the disease is prolonged but eventually they recover; yet some remain ill till their death.   

In the series Mission of the Messengers, lessons have been drawn from the narrations in The Quran about The Mighty Ancients, and the crimes that led to their punishment. One thing that is common is that they were Wronging the NAFS in spite of clear warnings to refrain from it.    

Advances in medical sciences are opening up new methods of treatments. In this series, I try to explore the diseases and treatments mentioned in The Quran, so that in our pursuit of cures for our ailments, we are well-aware of the limits, and do not trespass them. May Allah bless us with guidance and taqwa, and bless us with the goodness to make the right choices. Aameen.
