Women worship & Cattle Ears

Say, "He (is) Allah, the One.
Allah, the Eternal, the Absolute.
Not He begets and not He is begotten.
And not is for Him equivalent any [one]."
[Al-Quran 112]

In Surah an-Nisa` (The Women), we read:

116.

Lo! Allah pardoneth not that partners should be ascribed unto Him. He pardoneth all save that to whom He will. Whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah hath wandered far astray.

117.

They invoke in His stead only females; they pray to none else than Satan, a rebel

118.

Whom Allah cursed, and he said: Surely I will take of Thy bondmen an appointed portion,

119.

And surely I will lead them astray, and surely I will arouse desires in them, and surely I will command them and they will cut the cattle' ears, and surely I will command them and they will change Allah's creation. Whoso chooseth Satan for a patron instead of Allah is verily a loser and his loss is manifest.

120.

Pickthall: He promiseth them and stirreth up desires in them, and Satan promiseth them only to beguile.

[ Al-Quran, Surah an-Nisa` 116-119, Translation: Pickthall]

The Quran is very, very clear that there is only one being worthy of worship, Allah , and that ascribing partners to Him, is an unforgivable sin. Ascribing partners is wandering far astray from the true religion.

In the surah titled an-Nisa` (The Women), we are introduced to the polytheist worship of women. Looking up various mythologies, the female divine is an almost universal feature across almost all religions. Q4:117 informs us that all those who worship divine feminine beings are actually worshipping none but Satan, who is a rebel.

Allah ﷻ exposed Iblis' arrogance when he refused to obey Allah ﷻ 's command to prostrate to Adam عليه السلام. When Allah ﷻ cursed (removed from His Mercy) the rebellious Satan Iblis, he said he will take from Allah ﷻ 's servants a portion. Elsewhere in The Quran, we read that Allah  has granted Satan limited license to try to mislead His servants.

Q4:119 quotes Satan, as to how he plans to mislead:
  1. And surely I will lead them astray,
  2. and surely I will arouse desires in them,
  3. and surely I will command them and they will cut the cattle' ears
  4. and surely I will command them and they will change Allah's creation.
The ayat concludes with the clear warning:
Whoso chooseth Satan for a patron instead of Allah is verily a loser and his loss is manifest.

I have tried to understand the above ayat in several previous posts (links below). Recently, by the Grace of Allah ﷻ , I received a new insight by searching for the link between 'divine goddess' and 'cattle ears'. Curiously, there exist ancient statues of goddesses with cow ears, such as Hathor, and Bat, of ancient Egypt. The Egyptians also considered the Milky Way to be a cosmic pool of divine milk, as do some other mythologies.

Cattle feature in all religions and mythology. Hybrid human-animal features appear in the pantheon of many mythologies. They have been revered since ancient times, and continue to be revered to this day. There have been many communal riots and violence over cows, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. While Muslims consider slaughtering cows and eating their meat permissible, polytheist-majority nations take religious offence against such rituals.

The Quran informs us that the Bani Israel took a calf for worship in Moses (Musa عليه السلام)' absence. Their misleader, as-Samiri, told them that this calf was their god, and the god of Moses, but Moses had forgotten (Q20:80-99).

The Quran informs us that cattle were especially created to carry burden, and for food (Q6:142), and that Allah ﷻ has prescribed for each religion its ritual of sacrifice (Q22:34).

Many polytheistic mythologies consider cattle, especially cows, holy.
They have various beliefs about what can / can not || should / should not be killed or consumed. India is a modern-day example where cows are considered holy. The permission to slaughter cattle comes with restrictions, and may require a certificate. Article 48 of the Indian Constitution mandates the protection of the cow. Nepal is another example where cows are holy; however they used to slaughter buffaloes at specific Hindu festivals, but a ban was placed on the sacrifice in 2015. Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, China, Japan, Indonesia, all have a cow or beef related story.

In many parts of the world, across the ages, for religious, as well as agricultural purposes, cattle ears have also been marked as a visible sign of identification. Slitting the ears was a readily visible mark. Since the eighteenth century, ear tags are increasingly being preferred. The modern ear tags come with RFID technology.

The Quran on cow, cattle, and ritual sacrifice

Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow / Heifer) is the longest surah in The Quran. The first dua quoted in it is of Moses (Musa عليه السلام), when he told the Bani Israel to sacrifice a cow:

And when Moses said unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow, they said: Dost thou make game of us? He answered: Allah forbid that I should be among the foolish!

[Al-Quran, Surah al-Baqarah 67, Translation: Pickthall]

And remember Moses said to his people: "Allah commands that ye sacrifice a heifer." They said: "Makest thou a laughing-stock of us?" He said: "Allah save me from being an ignorant (fool)!"

[Al-Quran, Surah al-Baqarah 67, Translation: Yusuf Ali]

Allah  had rescued the Bani Israel from the Egyptians, who revered many gods and goddesses, including those related to cattle. They must have been familiar with the myth of the celestial cow, and the deities worshipped as its manifestation. They knew that the polytheists considered cows holy. The Bani Israel tried to avoid the sacrifice of a cow by putting up questions regarding the details, till they eventually had no choice but to carry out the command (Q2:67-74). Noteworthy is the fact that this command comes after the Exodus. Also noteworthy is the fact that the Bani Israel had taken the golden calf for worship (Q2:51-54), when Moses (Musa عليه السلام) went up Mount Sinai for forty nights.

Surah al-Maidah (The Table Spread)'s very first ayat includes the command about all cattle being lawful for food, and concludes with the statement that Allah ﷻ orders what He Wills. ... the next few ayaat detail the commands regarding animals for food, and include the statement that 'this day Allah has perfected your religion for you, ... '. Religion means the law of recompense. The mention of this phrase in Q5:3 clearly refutes any and all polytheistic belief about the terrible eternal consequences of killing and/or eating cow meat.

Surah al-An'aam (The Cattle) instructs us to refrain from seeking a means against those whom the polytheists call upon:

Revile not those unto whom they pray beside Allah lest they wrongfully revile Allah through ignorance. Thus unto every nation have We made their deed seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return, and He will tell them what they used to do.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-An'aam 108, Translation: Pickthall]

After explaining why, Surah al-An'aam (The Cattle) commands the believers to eat of that on which Allah ﷻ 's name has been pronounced (Q6:118). The surah refutes all superstitions about cattle, and it clearly lists the only four things forbidden to consume:

Say: I find not in that which is revealed unto me aught prohibited to an eater that he eat thereof, except it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or swineflesh - for that verily is foul - or the abomination which was immolated to the name of other than Allah. But whoso is compelled (thereto), neither craving nor transgressing, (for him) lo! thy Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-An'aam 145, Translation: Pickthall]

Say: I do not find in that which has been revealed to me anything forbidden for an eater to eat of except that it be what has died of itself, or blood poured forth, or flesh of swine-- for that surely is unclean-- or that which is a transgression, other than (the name of) Allah having been invoked on it; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring nor exceeding the limit, then surely your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-An'aam 145, Translation: Shakir]

The surah also lists what Allah ﷻ has forbidden / sanctified, clarifying that these are what comprise the correct religion (Q6:151-152).

The surah concludes with a note about the Abrahamic faith. To quote one of the last few ayaat:

Say: Lo! my worship and my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-An'aam 162, Translation: Pickthall

Surah Yusuf grants us insight into the faith of ancient Egypt, while refuting it in very clear terms, and clearly stating the true religion (the standing law of recompense) of the Abrahamic faith. Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) is quoted thus:

And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. It never was for us to attribute aught as partner to Allah. This is of the bounty of Allah unto us (the seed of Abraham) and unto mankind; but most men give not thanks.

O my fellow-prisoners! Are divers lords better, or Allah the One, Almighty?

Those whom ye worship beside Him are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers. Allah hath revealed no sanction for them. The decision rests with Allah only, Who hath commanded you that ye worship none save Him. This is the right religion, but most men know not.

[Al-Quran, Surah Yusuf 38-40, Translation: Pickthall

Surah Yusuf relates Egypt's King's dream which no one could interpret:

And the king said: Lo! I saw in a dream seven fat kine which seven lean were eating, and seven green ears of corn and other (seven) dry. O notables! Expound for me my vision, if ye can interpret dreams.

[Al-Quran, Surah Yusuf 43, Translation: Pickthall]

And the king (of Egypt) said: "Verily, I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows, whom seven lean ones were devouring, and seven green ears of corn, and (seven) others dry. O notables! Explain to me my dream, if it be that you can interpret dreams."

[Al-Quran, Surah Yusuf 43, Translation: Mohsin Khan]

Allah ﷻ blessed Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) with the correct interpretation. This clearly proved that it is only Allah ﷻ who controls the climate and Allah ﷻ controls the events that come to pass.

Surah an-Nahl (The Honey Bee) begins with the assurance that Allah ﷻ 's command is coming, and to not desire it to be hastened, and that Allah ﷻ is above all they associate with Him. ... The purposeful creation of cattle, and their various benefit to humans are mentioned in some detail. The milk from them is mentioned thus:

And lo! in the cattle there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, from betwixt the refuse and the blood, pure milk palatable to the drinkers.

[Al-Quran, Surah an-Nahl 66, Translation: Pickthall

The very next few ayaat mention how your Lord has inspired the honey bee, and that the honey produced by her contains cure for  humans.

Surah al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) begins with the warning to have taqwa (fear) of our Lord, indeed the earthquake when The Hour will be established is a terrible thing. ... It relates that Abraham was shown the place, commanded not to worship anyone except Allah , and to purify Allah ﷻ 's house ... , and to proclaim al-Hajj (the pilgrimage) to all humans:

That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor unfortunate.

Then let them make an end of their unkemptness and pay their vows and go around the ancient House.

That (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the sacred things of Allah, it will be well for him in the sight of his Lord. The cattle are lawful unto you save that which hath been told you. So shun the filth of idols, and shun lying speech,

Turning unto Allah (only), not ascribing partners unto Him; for whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him or the wind had blown him to a far-off place.

That (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the offerings consecrated to Allah, it surely is from devotion of the hearts,

Therein are benefits for you for an appointed term; and afterward they are brought for sacrifice unto the ancient House.

And for every nation have We appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He hath given them for food; and your god is One God, therefor surrender unto Him. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the humble,

Whose hearts fear when Allah is mentioned, and the patient of whatever may befall them, and those who establish worship and who spend of that We have bestowed on them.

And the camels! We have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant. Thus have We made them subject unto you, that haply ye may give thanks.

Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good.

Lo! Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not each treacherous ingrate.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-Hajj 28-38, Translation: Pickthall]

Natural Biology of Procreation

Transhumanism - III: bypassing the womb?

In the first ayat of the Surah titled An-Nisa` (The Women), The Quran commands us to guard the uterus/womb, being conscious of our duty towards it, as it is the specialised organ in women through which Allah increases the population of men and women in this world.

The Quran was revealed on Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) . The forty seventh surah bears his name. Surah Muhammad begins with the statement that those who disbelieve/reject, and avert people from the way of Allah, He will waste their deeds. It gives glad tidings to those who believe and do acts of righteousness/reform, and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, that He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition. ... Later on, in ayat 22 , it questions:

Transhumanism aims to transcend the natural biology of human procreation with the help of technology. It  intends to 'liberate' women from their biological window, increase the number of eggs available to them by artificially growing eggs, and sperms, from skin cells, eliminating the need for a partner, as well as the need for sexual relations, and so on. Some of the buzz words of transhumanism are: Designer babies, Artificial Wombs, Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs), Selective Reproductive Technologies (SRTs), ART survivorship, Oocyte preservation, and Sperm banks.

In The Torah / Old Testament, we read in Adam's story:

[The Contemporary Torah, Genesis Bereshit 3 16]

[The Old Testament, Genesis 3 16]

Allah's decrees cannot be changed. Conjugal relations between husband and wife, conception, and child birth, should be allowed to happen naturally. Believers must observe the sanctity of the marriage institution, the specialised organ: uterus/womb in which the baby is shaped by Allah as He wills, and the normal process of birth. So, we read early on in The Quran:

Human Germ-Line Genetic Enhancement, or simply Designer Babies, aims to genetically manipulate human nature. The Quran is very clear that there should be no change in the human nafs and the human fitrat. Many ancient civilisations were destroyed when they made changes in the nafs.

Satan is the enemy. In Surah an-Nisa`, ayat 119, he has vowed to command humans to make changes in the creation of Allah: ( (... وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ ...) literal translation: '... and surely I will order them so they will surely change (the) creation (of) Allah ...' ).

In Surah ar-Ra'd we read the rule:

The underlined phrase in Arabic is: It is generally translated as change. The root of the word يُغَيِّرُوا is used in ayat 15 of Surah Muhammad to describe that, in the Gardens of Eternity, the milk's taste will not change. Notice that the same root is used in Q4:119, Q8:53, and Q13:11. Milk goes sour due the action of lactic acid bacteria causing chemical change in the milk. So, it seems we are being warned against inflicting chemical changes in our Nafs.

Jesus (عليه السلام) was a sign for the people (Q19:21). He was conceived through a word from Allah, which was blown into Mary's body. Modern computing technology proves that wireless, verbal commands can be given to machines, and special programs in them respond by recognising and processing speech.

Jesus' conception, speaking when just a baby, the miracles he performed when he grew up, and his ascension, all are miraculous, supernatural acts that Allah showed through him. Yet, his mother had to endure pregnancy and labour pains when delivering him:

The Words of Allah ﷻ, our Lord

Transhumanism - II: Natural vs Artificial

They say 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. So, then, how many words does it take to make a picture? A moving picture in high-resolution...

Computer Science introduces us to the concept of coding with words. A simple image requires a number of commands to display an image on a screen. As the resolution of the image increases, and the details in the image increase, the number of words used to generate that image increases. If the image is to appear to move, several almost identical copies of the original image need to be coded to display it on a flat screen. And then there are 3D images, ...

Mathematics introduces us to the concept of dimensions. Generally, a point is considered zero-D, a line one-D, a closed flat shape, for example a circle or square two-D, such a shape with volume, for example sphere or cube, three-D, and then the time dimension, and other dimensions which can be studied mathematically, but cannot be experienced directly in our 3D world.

Physics introduces us to the concept of Many Worlds.

Or were we introduced to these concepts much earlier, in Scripture, and we are just beginning to comprehend the grandness of it all?

The Quran begins with the name of Allah  (Q1:1), praising Allah  who is the Rabb of all the Many Worlds (Q1:2). To Allah  belongs creation and command (Q7:54).

The Torah and The Quran inform us of the grand act of creation by Allah ﷻ :

Allah  has created earth and the seven skies in six days. All needs of all who ask were taken care of in the initial four days of creation of the Earth. After the creation was complete, Allah  ascended The Throne, and assigned each sky its mandate. Then, the rain was sent to make all things grow. The dead world started to come alive. Allah  blessed His creation, and so it started flourishing.

Now, think of it in this way: Allah  coded the master program, and all details of all the sub-programs, the metavariables, and their details, built in the time dimension, set the timing for each function, and then executed that program, in the first six days of creation. The structures were ready with all their potential. The rules (commands) were given to each sky, including our earth's sky. The Master Work was complete. Just as electricity is used to run computers and their programs, water was sent so that all the biological programs started running with its characters getting instantiated, and performing, in a timely manner.

The mind boggles trying to imagine the number of words of Allah  that went into creating everything and everyone, and then maintaining the creation, on an on-going basis. And so, The Quran informs us:

Allah  has created a perfectly designed world with just ends. It is designed purposefully. It is time-bound. It, and all in it, are meant to experience an end. And a resurrection. Then, an immortal heaven and hell.

The Quran warns us that there should be no change in the creation of Allah ﷻ

It repeatedly presents the example of Adam, and the temptations suggested to him, which led to his fall.

The Quran repeatedly cites the example of mighty ancients who were destroyed when they tried to change what is within their Nafs.

The transhumanist vision of creating the perfect creature, the promise of a cyborg who will transcend disease and death, is an illusion. The Quran is very clear that they cannot even create a fly, let alone a perfect human.

Prolonging Life

Transhumanism - IV: escaping death for a thousand years?

[The Contemporary Torah, Genesis Bereshit 3 22-24]

[The Old Testament, Genesis 3 21-24]

The Bible informs us that the Tree of Life is being guarded, and thus humans will not be able to achieve immortality. The Quran inform us that death is a purposeful creation, and even if the criminals are awarded lifespans of one thousand years, they will not be able to escape death, resurrection, accountability and consequent punishment. The Quran also speaks of a dreadful tree that will be a trial upon resurrection.

Initially, in very ancient times, there seems to be a period when people lived longer. Metuselah is believed to have lived the longest: 969 years, and so, his name crops up in transhumanist literature. According to The Quran, Noah lived 950 years. From The Bible, we come to know that Metuselah was Noah's grandfather. From The Bible, we come to know that Adam lived 930 years.

According to The Bible, in Noah's time, when there was great wickednesses in the world, The Lord limited mankind's age to 120 years [Genesis 6 3].

Transhumanists believe that they are on the brink of life extension. Their literature speaks of a thousand years when they speak of a long life. Why? Do they also base their expectations and hopes in Biblical stories of long ago? In their heart of hearts, do they believe that one thousand years is what The Lord had initially determined human lifespan when He created them?

The Quran, after narrating Adam's fall in Surah alBaqarah, reminds the Bani Israel of their covenant. In one of the comments about them, it states:

Human Devolution

 Transhumanism - V: purposefully imperfect

The Quran informs us that after being created in the best of moulds, we have been reduced to the lowest of the low. There is a teleological reason for our mortal existence in this temporary world. We are purposefully imperfect.

The Quran, and The Torah / Old Testament, inform us of our forefather Adam's creation, trial in The Garden, and his fall. We have inherited Adam's frail body. Other misadventures by our subsequent forefathers has reduced more from our perfect inheritance. Though we do not carry the sin of the their disobedience, we do carry the consequences of those mistakes in our genomes.

The Quran specifically narrates Adam's purpose: Khilafat of the Earth. Just as Joseph was appointed over the store houses of Egypt to manage the food supplies during abundance and famine, Adam was initially appointed Khalifa over the entire Earth to manage what needs to be managed. When the chosen people, the Bani Israel were in power, Prophet-King David was appointed Khalifa to rule over them, to fight against the corrupt, and to declare the perfection of the one true God.

The Abrahamic religions explain the teleological reasons for this temporary mortal existence, promise a Judgment, and a restoration of perfection to those who are declared successful on Judgement Day.

[The Contemporary Torah, Genesis Bereshit 1 26-27]

[The Old Testament, Genesis 1 26-27]

The Abrahamic religions speak about the creation of the human, in the image of God, and then his devolution. The Quran 30:30 warns against changing the creation of God, particularly the human:

So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah . That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know

[Al-Quran 30:30, Translation: Sahih International]

Humans must not attempt to change human nature. That is one of the three standing laws of the correct religion.

On the contrary, the secular faith of the transhumanists is based on the atheistic belief in the theory of evolution, whereby humans are continually evolving. They believe the first human(s) mutated from an ape-like ancestor(s) into what can be classified as the Genus Homo. They see the human frailty as a reason to embrace the utopian dream of being able to self-transform into machine-hybrids (transhumans) and from there, continue on their journey to becoming some perfect beings (posthumans), leaving behind all that is humans.

As the transhumanists do not believe in God, and creation, they refuse to understand and acknowledge the teleological reasons for our purposeful existence and accountability.
