Their Descendants from Their Backs

… Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.[12:40]

The entire progeny being in the back of the father is quite enigmatic. However, medical science is now coming to discover that there is a definite link between the back and semen.

وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَنِي آدَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ شَهِدْنَا أَن تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَٰذَا غَافِلِينَ

أَوْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أَشْرَكَ آبَاؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِّن بَعْدِهِمْ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ

وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls (nafs): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! we bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection: Surely we were heedless of this.
Or you should say: Only our fathers associated others (with Allah) before, and we were an offspring after them: Wilt Thou then destroy us for what the vain doers did?
And thus do We make clear the communications, and that haply they might return.

Some time in our ancient past, which we do not consciously remember, The Quran informs us that from the back of the sons of Adam, all their descendants were taken out, to testify over their Nafs as to who their Lord is. 

This idea of the entire progeny being in the back of the father, and being taken out to witness their own nafs, has been, and still is, quite enigmatic. However, medical science is now coming to discover that there is a definite link between the back and semen. Men who suffer spinal cord injury (SCI) also suffer from poor reproductive health, even though their sperm count does not diminish. 

 Surah as-Sajdah informs us:

الَّذِي أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ الْإِنسَانِ مِن طِينٍ

ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُ مِن سُلَالَةٍ مِّن مَّاءٍ مَّهِينٍ

ثُمَّ سَوَّاهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

Who made good everything that He has created, and He began the creation of man from dust.
Then He made his progeny of an extract, of water held in light estimation.
Then He made him complete and breathed into him of His spirit command, and made for you the ears and the eyes and the hearts feelings; little is it that you give thanks.

Surah al-Waqiah draws attention to the semen emitted:  


نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ

أَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ 

We [We] created you, so why (do) not you admit the truth?
Do you see what you emit?
Is it you who create it or (are) We the Creators?
We [We] have decreed among you the death and not We (are) outrun,
In that We (will) change your likeness[es] and produce you in what not you know.
And certainly you know the creation the first, so why not you take heed?

Males emit semen containing the spermatozoa (the male reproductive sex cells), and other organic and inorganic materials. Among them is a protein known as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which is basically associated with the Central Nervous System (CNS), that is, the brain and spinal cord. NGF is also abundant in seminal plasma. This is an area of on-going research, mainly in animal studies,  while not much relevant information is presently available regarding NGF in human semen, even though its abundance and importance is well recognised.   

Also, the curious case of the human Y chromosome, which is found only in the semen of mammals, continues to amaze, baffle, and worry, the scientific community. Its already one-third the size of the X chromosome, and scientists believe that it has been degenerating and thus diminishing in size, and may eventually run into extinction:

The Y chromosome is believed to contain the master switch which determines whether the baby will be male (XY) or female (XX). The Y chromosome contains very few other genes, and appears to be the only chromosome not necessary for life. The Quran already informs us that humans were created from a single human nafs, a feminine word, and its first human male mate was created from it, and from their mating, many men and women were procreated (Q4:1). Furthermore, by creating Jesus within a virgin mother, Allah has practically demonstrated the possibility of male humans being created without a father. Furthermore, noteworthy is the fact that not all lifeforms follow the general human/mammalian method of procreation and sex-selection.

The male descendants of Adam are under a covenant. Many species of the genus Homo have already gone extinct, and many ancient civilisations have already been destroyed. The Quran warns:

وَرَبُّكَ الْغَنِيُّ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفْ مِن بَعْدِكُم مَّا يَشَاءُ

كَمَا أَنشَأَكُم مِّن ذُرِّيَّةِ قَوْمٍ آخَرِينَ

إِنَّ مَا تُوعَدُونَ لَآتٍ وَمَا أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ

And your Lord (is) the Self-Sufficient Owner of Mercy. If He wills He can take you away and grant succession after you (to) whom He wills. 
as He raised you from the descendants (of) other people.
Indeed, what you are promised (is) sure to come. And you (can) not escape (it).
[Al-Quran 6:133-134]
