[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

The Case against the Bani Israel

Abstract
The Quran on the Bani Israel, the chosen people, and their responsibility regarding The Torah, as per the covenant they ratified with God, and the consequences.

Full Text

Has appeared the corruption in the land and the sea for what have earned (the) hands (of) people,
so that He may let them taste a part (of) that which they have done so that they may return.
[Al-Quran 30:41]

The Quran is a divine revelation, and so are the scriptures revealed before it. They contain guidance for those who wish to keep their duty. Among the qualities of such people is their believe in all the scriptures. The Quran begins with a prayer for guidance, a description of the believers and the rejectors, and then attention is drawn to the corrupters:

When they are told, "Do not cause corruption in the land," they say, "But we are reformers!"
They are truly corrupters and do not realize it.
[Al-Quran 2:11-12, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

Our Creator does not like corruption of His creation. Human activities have wreaked much havoc on this planet, destroying many species, and harming many others, including our own selves. Divine revelations are meant to guide us away from all that we do wrong, so that we can return to God, repenting from our sins, our ignorant and unjust ways, and seeking forgiveness. God, in His Mercy, promises to forgive us, reform us and grant us The Gardens of Eternity as an inheritance.

The Chosen People
The Quran reminds the Bani Israel of their covenant:

O CHILDREN of Israel! Remember those blessings of Mine with which I graced you,
and fulfil your promise unto Me, [whereupon] I shall fulfil My promise unto you;
and of Me, of Me stand in awe!
[Al-Quran 2:40, Translation: Muhammad Asad]
Note: عَهْدِ means covenant, a formal, binding, solemn agreement

Adam was under a covenant, and so he is mentioned early on in The Quran, with the emphasis on the knowledge taught to him by God Himself, his being made a khalifa, and how Satan made him slip! God acceptance of Adam's repentance, and conditional pardon is mentioned thus:

Then learnt Adam from his Lord words of inspiration, and his Lord Turned towards him; for He is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.
We said: "Get ye down all from here; and if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from me, whosoever follows My guidance, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
"But those who reject Faith and belie Our Signs, they shall be companions of the Fire; they shall abide therein."
[Al-Quran 2:37-39, Translation: Yusuf Ali]

Immediately after narrating Adam's story, the Bani Israel are reminded of their covenant:

There onwards, we can read a list of favours the Almighty Allah favoured them with, their trials, their their failures, the numerous times they were forgiven, the covenants they ratified with God, ... , the major events in their collective history. The Quran extensively discusses the Bani Israel, the chosen people, across the text in several surahs. They are under a ratified covenant with God to hold fast to The Torah, which is a guidance for all people, to observe it themselves, first and foremost, and also to make it known to all people:

And when Allah took ratified a Covenant taken (from) those who were given the Book,
"You certainly make it clear to the mankind
and (do) not conceal it.
Then they threw it behind their backs and they exchanged [with] it (for) a little price. And wretched (is) what they purchase.
[Al-Quran 3:187, Translation edited (in italics)]

However, not all People of the Book are the same. Some of them do keep their duty, and Allah will reward them. Surah Aal-e-Imran concludes thus:

And lo! of the People of the Scripture there are some who believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto you and that which was revealed unto them, humbling themselves before Allah. They purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah. Verily their reward is with their Lord. Lo! Allah is swift to take account.
O ye who believe! Endure, outdo all others in endurance, be ready, and observe your duty to Allah, in order that ye may succeed.
[Al-Quran 3:199-200, Translation: M. M. Pickthal]

In fact, Surah Al-Ara`f informs us that Muhammad is mentioned in their scriptures:

Those who follow the Messenger-Prophet, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Taurat and the Injeel (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful to them the good things and makes unlawful to them impure things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles which were upon them; so (as for) those who believe in him and honor him and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him, these it is that are the successful.
[Al-Quran 7:157, Translation: Shakir]

The Torah

He hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel.
[Al-Quran 3:3, Translation: M. M. Pickthal]

Verily We sent down the Taurat wherein was a guidance and a light. By it the prophets who submitted themselves judged those who were judaised, and so did the divines and the priests by that wherewith they were entrusted of the Book of Allah and they had become witnesses thereof. Wherefore fear not the mankind but fear Me, and barter not My revelations for a small price, And whosoever judgeth not by that which Allah hath sent down - those then they are the infidels.
[Al-Quran 5:44, Translation: Abdul Majid Daryabadi]

THUS, INDEED, did We bestow Our favour upon Moses and Aaron;
...
And We gave them the divine writ that made [right and wrong] distinct,
[Al-Quran 37:114-117, Translation: Muhammad Asad]

And, indeed, We bestowed aforetime [Our] guidance on Moses, and [thus] made the children of Israel heirs to the divine writ [revealed to him]
[Al-Quran 40:53, Translation: Muhammad Asad]

Negligence of The Torah

The example of those who were entrusted to uphold the Torah, but then failed to uphold it, is that of a donkey carrying volumes of knowledge. Terrible is the example of the people who reject the signs of God. God does not guide the unjust People.
[Al-Quran 62:5, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

A Brief History
From The Bible and The Quran, we learn:

We gave unto Moses the Scripture, and We appointed it a guidance for the children of Israel, saying: Choose no guardian beside Me.
(They were) the seed of those whom We carried (in the ship) along with Noah. Lo! he was a grateful slave.
And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Scripture: Ye verily will work corruption in the earth twice, and ye will become great tyrants.
So when the time for the first of the two came, We roused against you slaves of Ours of great might who ravaged (your) country, and it was a threat performed.
Then we gave you once again your turn against them, and We aided you with wealth and children and made you more in soldiery.
(Saying): If ye do good, ye do good for your own souls, and if ye do evil, it is for them (in like manner). So, when the time for the second (of the judgments) came (We roused against you others of Our slaves) to ravage you, and to enter the Temple even as they entered it the first time, and to lay waste all that they conquered with an utter wasting.
It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you, but if ye repeat (the crime) We shall repeat (the punishment), and We have appointed hell a dungeon for the disbelievers.
Lo! this Qur'an guideth unto that which is straightest, and giveth tidings unto the believers who do good works that theirs will be a great reward.
And that those who believe not in the Hereafter, for them We have prepared a painful doom.
[Al-Quran 17:2-10, Translation: M. M. Pickthal]

Surah al-Isra, also known as Surah Bani Israel, begins with the celebration of the perfection of Allah who took Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on a journey to show him some signs (ayaat), from al-Masjid al-Haraam (in Makkah, where The Kaaba is located) to al-Masjid al-Aqsa (the farthest mosque, probably where Bait-ul-Mamoor is located). The very next ayat (sign) then draws attention to the corruptions of the Bani Israel after they had been given The Book. Q17:8 offers them hope of their Lord's mercy and sternly warns them!

Gathered Together
Towards the end of the surah, the proofs that were being demanded from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding his ascension are quoted. The surah includes the following remarks about the Bani Israel among its last few ayaat:

And verily We gave unto Moses nine tokens, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Do but ask the Children of Israel how he came unto them, then Pharaoh said unto him: Lo! I deem thee one bewitched, O Moses.
He said: In truth thou knowest that none sent down these (portents) save the Lord of the heavens and the earth as proofs, and lo! (for my part) I deem thee lost, O Pharaoh.
And he wished to scare them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him, all together.
And We said unto the Children of Israel after him: Dwell in the land; but when the promise of the Hereafter cometh to pass We shall bring you as a crowd gathered out of various nations.
With truth have We sent it down, and with truth hath it descended. And We have sent thee as naught else save a bearer of good tidings and a warner.
[Al-Quran 17:101-105, Translation: M. M. Pickthal]

Men of Strength and Vision

And commemorate Our Servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, possessors of Power and Vision.
Verily We did choose them for a special (purpose)- proclaiming the Message of the Hereafter.
They were, in Our sight, truly, of the company of the Elect and the Good.
And commemorate Isma'il, Elisha, and Zul-Kifl: Each of them was of the Company of the Good.
This is a Message (of admonition): and verily, for the righteous, is a beautiful Place of (Final) Return,-
[Al-Quran 38:45-49, Translation: Yusuf Ali]

Surah Saad mentions Jacob (Israel) and his ancestors (Isaac and Abraham), powerful men who were chosen, and who kept their duty, citing them as examples of excellence. Prior to that, the surah quotes the advise given to Prophet-King David:

O David! We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account.
[Al-Quran 38:26, Translation: Yusuf Ali]

Repent and Reform

Bear with what they say, and remember Our bondman David, lord of might, Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).
[Al-Quran 38:17

And We bestowed on David, Solomon. How excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).
[Al-Quran 38:30

And (it was said unto him): Take in thine hand a branch and smite therewith, and break not thine oath. Lo! We found him steadfast, how excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (to his Lord).
[Al-Quran 38:44

Surah Saad narrates about the trials and repentance of three powerful men from the Bani Israel: David, Solomon and Job. Highlighted in Surah Saad is their repentance to God after they erred. This contrasts sharply with Iblis (Satan)'s defiant disobedience, mentioned at the end of the surah.

The Defiantly Disobedient

Curses were pronounced on those among the Children of Israel who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary: because they disobeyed and persisted in excesses.
[Al-Quran 5:78, Translation: Yusuf Ali]

Surah as-Sajdah (The Prostration) declares that the Believers and the Defiantly Disobedient are not alike; and then we read about the two punishments for the defiantly disobedient:

Is he who is a believer like unto him who is an evil-liver? They are not alike.
But as for those who believe and do good works, for them are the Gardens of Retreat - a welcome (in reward) for what they used to do.
And as for those who do evil, their retreat is the Fire. Whenever they desire to issue forth from thence, they are brought back thither. Unto them it is said: Taste the torment of the Fire which ye used to deny.
And verily We make them taste the lower punishment before the greater, that haply they may return.
And who doth greater wrong than he who is reminded of the revelations of his Lord, then turneth from them. Lo! We shall requite the guilty.
[Al-Quran 32:18-22, Translation: M. M. Pickthal]

The Day of Victory
The Surah then concludes with the mention of the Bani Israel and the Day of Victory promised to the Believers:

We verily gave Moses the Scripture; so be not ye in doubt of his receiving it; and We appointed it a guidance for the Children of Israel.
And when they became steadfast and believed firmly in Our revelations, We appointed from among them leaders who guided by Our command.
Lo! thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ.
Is it not a guidance for them (to observe) how many generations We destroyed before them, amid whose dwelling places they do walk? Lo! therein verily are portents! Will they not then heed?
Have they not seen how We lead the water to the barren land and therewith bring forth crops whereof their cattle eat, and they themselves? Will they not then see?
And they say: When cometh this victory (of yours) if ye are truthful?
Say (unto them): On the day of the victory the faith of those who disbelieve (and who then will believe) will not avail them, neither will they be reprieved.
So withdraw from them (O Muhammad), and await (the event). Lo! they (also) are awaiting (it).

Guidance for Believers

O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[This is] so that the People of the Scripture may know that they are not able [to obtain] anything from the bounty of Allah and that [all] bounty is in the hand of Allah ; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

[Al-Quran 57:28-29, Translation: Sahih International]

O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the inhabitants of the graves.
[Al-Quran 60:13, Translation: Sahih International]

As custodians of The Quran, we Muslims have been entrusted with a huge responsibility. There are many lessons of faith, submission, guarding and sharing to be learnt from the history of the Bani Israel. May Allah grant us the good fortune to keep our duty and may Allah be well-pleased with us.

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."
And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.
But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].
[Al-Quran 41:33-35, Translation: Sahih International]
