[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

Q20 115-124 || Q12

Adam & Joseph

Exploring the narrative about Adam in Surah Ta Ha (Q20:115-124) in the light of Surah Yusuf

Our Need to Pray
Before beginning the narrative about Adam in Surah Ta Ha, we read the directive to recite a three-word profound dua:
Increase me (in) knowledge." [Q20:114]). Too often, believers assume they know everything they need to know about the story of Adam, even though popular belief is not in line with what The Quran states about it. We need to understand this story, as it is being narrated to us in The Quran, as this is where our story begins, and we start to realise the urgency of the warnings and the guidance.

Covenant & Forgetfulness

And verily We made a covenant with Adam from before, but he forgot; and not We found in him determination.
[Al-Quran 20:115]

And sought to seduce him she who, he (was) in her house from his self nafs. And she closed the doors and she said, "Come on you." He said, "I seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, he (is) my lord (who has) made good my stay. Indeed, not will succeed the wrongdoers."
And certainly she did desire him, and he would have desired her, if not that he saw the proof (of) his Lord. Thus, that We might avert from him the evil and the immorality. Indeed, he (was) of Our slaves the sincere chosen.
[Al-Quran 12:23-24; translation edited in italics]

...

And he said to the one whom he thought that he (would be) saved of both of them, "Mention me to your master." But made him forget the Shaitaan (the) mention (to) his master, so he remained in the prison several years.
[Al-Quran 12:42]

...

He said, "Never will I send him with you until you give to me a promise by Allah that surely you will bring to him unless that surrounded you are." And when they had given him their promise, he said, "Allah over what we say (is) a Guardian."
[Al-Quran 12:66]

...

So when they despaired of him, they secluded themselves (in) private consultation. Said the eldest among them, "Do not you know that your father, indeed has taken upon you a promise by Allah, and from before that you failed concerning Yusuf? So never will I leave the land until permits me my father or decides Allah for me, and He (is) the Best (of) the judges.
[Al-Quran 12:80]

The narration about Adam in Surah Ta Ha begins with the mention of the covenant taken from Adam, which he forgot, because he was not determined about upholding it. Earlier in the surah, Q20:80, reminds the Bani Israel of the covenant Allah took from them. Surah Ta Ha focuses on the story of Moses, and the liberation of his people, the descendants of Joseph and his brothers. The Quran informs us of the covenant ratified with the Bani Israel, the chosen people, after the Exodus along with Moses.

Surah Yusuf is the story about the twelve sons of Jacob (the first generation Bani Israel). Q12:24 informs us that Joseph was a chosen slave of Allah, and so Allah averted evil and immorality from him. In it is mentioned the covenant that Jacob ratifies with Joseph's elder brothers regarding his younger brother (Q12:66), and how they were unable to uphold it (Q12:80).

Q20:115 informs us that Adam forgot his covenant, and that he was not determined to uphold it. In the very first mention about Adam in The Quran, immediately after it, Q2:40 exhorts the Bani Israel to uphold their covenant, so that Allah also upholds His Covenant with them.

Satan plays a role in forgetfulness. As Q12:42 mentions, the man released from prison forgot to mention Joseph to his master because Satan made him forget.

However, Allah is determined about His Plans, and nothing can cause any change in it. Adam was made a Khalifa for the Earth (Q2:30), and he and his progeny are the dominant specie on this planet.

Iblis & The Egyptian Cobra

And when We said to the Angels, "Prostrate to Adam," then they prostrated, except Iblis; he refused.
[Al-Quran 20:116]

He said, "Not (will) come to both of you food you are provided with but I will inform both of you of its interpretation, before [that] [it] comes to both of you. That (is) of what has taught me my Lord. Indeed, I [I] abandon (the) religion (of) a people, not they believe in Allah, and they in the Hereafter [they] (are) disbelievers.
And I follow (the) religion (of) my forefathers, Ibrahim, and Ishaq and Yaqub. Not was for us that we associate with Allah any thing. That (is) from (the) Grace (of) Allah upon us, and upon the mankind but most (of) the men (are) not grateful.
[Al-Quran 12:37-38]

To Allah belongs everything and He knows everything. With that introduction, Surah Ta Ha Q20:9 starts relating the story of Moses. When Allah spoke with Moses, Allah ordered him to establish prayer for His Remembrance, as the Promised Hour is definitely going to occur, when every nafs will be recompensed! Moses was also warned against being averted from prayer by the one who doesn't believe and follows هَوَاهُ generally translated as 'his desires'.

To show Moses a sign, Allah asked him to throw his stick which became a snake (حَيَّةٌ). Moses was then told not be afraid of it, but rather to pick it up, upon which it would revert to its former state.

The Egyptian Cobra was a symbol of royalty, deity, sovereignty and divine authority in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptian Pharaohs wore the symbol on their head. The Egyptian Cobra is called Naja Haje. On the Wikipedia page about the Egyptian cobra (dated March 19, 2021), it states:

Etymology and taxonomy

The Naja haje was first described by Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus in 1758. The generic name naja is a Latinisation of the Sanskrit word nāgá (नाग) meaning "cobra". The specific epithet haje is derived from the Arabic word ḥayya (حية) which literally means "snake".[4]

With the two miracles in Moses' hand: (the control over the Egyptian Cobra & the Healed Hand), Moses was commanded to go to The Pharaoh to demand the release of Allah's chosen people: the Bani Israel.

The Bible, Genesis 3:1, explicitly declares that the beast in The Garden was a serpent.  While Q18:50 already informs us that Iblis is from the jinn (an ectotherm), and Q27:10 & Q28:31 state that Moses' stick became a jaan (snake), in Q20:20 it clearly specifies the species: (حَيَّةٌ), the very symbol the Pharaoh wore on his head! Iblis, the snake, had refused to prostrate to Adam, and the polytheistic Egyptians revered the very creature.

Faith in one Allah, and submission to His Commands, the monotheistic religion of Abraham, stands in sharp contrast to the polytheistic beliefs of the ancient Egyptians.

Open Enemy

Then We said, "O Adam! Indeed, this (is) an enemy to you and to your wife. So not (let) him drive you both from Paradise so (that) you would suffer.
[Al-Quran 20:117]

He said, "O my son! (Do) not relate your vision to your brothers lest they plan against you a plot. Indeed, the Shaitaan (is) to man an enemy open.
[Al-Quran 12:5]

Right at the beginning of Adam's story, when he is being placed in Paradise, he was warned about the enmity of Iblis. His arrogance had already been exposed when he refused to prostrate. The sequence is significant: covenant from Adam -> Iblis' arrogance exposed -> warning about Iblis' enmity

Right at the beginning of Joseph's story, upon his vision of being prostrated to, his father Jacob warns his son not to share his dream with his brothers. Again, the reason they would plot against him is the enmity of The Satan, Iblis.

(Not We (have) sent down to you the Quran that you be distressed). The Quran is a reminder! Q20:117 reminds us that Adam was warned against the enmity of Iblis, and told: (So not (let) him drive you both from Paradise so (that) you would suffer.) Q20:123 recaps the message stated at the beginning of the surah.

Q12:1-3 state:

Alif Laam Ra. These (are the) Verses (of) the Book [the] clear.
Indeed, We, We have sent it down, (as) a Quran in Arabic so that you may understand.
We relate to you the best of the narrations in what We have revealed to you (of) this the Quran, although you were, from before it, surely among the unaware.
[Al-Quran 12:1-3]

Neither Hungry nor Naked

Indeed, for you that not you will be hungry therein and not you will be unclothed.
[Al-Quran 20:118]

Certainly were in Yusuf and his brothers signs for those who ask.
When they said, "Surely Yusuf and his brother (are) more beloved to our father than we, while we (are) a group. Indeed, our father (is) surely in an error clear.
Kill Yusuf or cast him (to) a land so will be free for you (the) face (of) your father, and you will be from after that a people righteous."
[Al-Quran 12:7-9]

Q20:118, I think, holds the most important key to understand how the story of Adam is different from what is popularly believed. Right from the start, they were clothed. The verb form used is فعل مضارع which includes both present and future tenses. So, لَا تَعْرَىٰ literally translates as neither you are nor will you be naked! Looking around us, almost all of Allah's creation is naturally clothed. By the Grace of Allah, Q20:118 has inspired a series of posts in this blog

Surah Yusuf mentions three significant clothes of Joseph. Please read  Joseph's قَمِيصَ (Shirt / Jacket). The first of those is the one that his father gave him, which his brothers stained with false blood, after they had gotten rid of Joseph by throwing him in the well.

Surah Yusuf also mentions three food-related dreams: the dreams of the two prisoners which signified their fate, and the dream of the king signifying the food-related eras: two seven-year periods, the former easy, the latter tough, and then the year of plenty. When the King's dream is realised, then during the seven tough years of food shortage, Joseph's brothers come to Egypt to get food. Eventually, as the story develops, they all settle there honourably.

Several centuries later, the Bani Israel are enslaved in Egypt, and Pharaoh is their enemy. Eventually, Allah liberates them. Surah Ta Ha discusses Moses' mission to the Pharaoh, leading up to their deliverance. Q20:80 links the covenant taken from the Bani Israel with the food (al-manna al-salwa) provided for them. The next ayat encourages them to eat from the good things provided for them, and warns them to not transgress in it, lest Allah's anger becomes 'halal' upon them! Merciful as Allah is, the next ayat allows a 're-covering' for those who repent and do acts of reform.

Food and clothing are linked in Adam's story, and also in the story of the Bani Israel.

Neither Thirsty nor Hot

And that you not will suffer from thirst therein and not exposed to the sun's heat."

[Al-Quran 20:119]

So when they entered upon him they said, "O Aziz! Has touched us and our family the adversity, and we have come with goods (of) little value, but pay (in) full to us the measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable."
He said, "Do you know what you did with Yusuf and his brother, when you were ignorant?"
[Al-Quran 12:88-89]

The Bible, Genesis 3:19, informs us that upon expulsion from The Garden, Adam was told: 'By the sweat of your brow/forehead, you will eat ...' Sweat implies heat and thirst.

In the story of the brothers of Joseph, they have to travel to Egypt in search of food, enduring the harshness of the journey.

Tree of Life

Then whispered to him Shaitaan, he said, "O Adam! Shall I direct you to (the) tree (of) the Eternity and a kingdom not (that will) deteriorate?"
[Al-Quran 20:120]

Not you worship from besides Him but names which you have named, you and your forefathers, not (has) sent down Allah for it any authority. Not (is) the command but for Allah. He has commanded that not you worship but Him Alone. That (is) the religion the right, but most [the] men (do) not know.
[Al-Quran 12:40]

The Tree of Life is a common belief across many mythologies. The Ancient Egyptians also had a tree associated with the first couple, and the ennead, who they believe were gods... there are various 'confusing' accounts of the myths.

Iblis tempted Adam into eating from the forbidden tree with the promise of eternity and a kingdom that never decays.

Surah Yusuf very clearly refutes the gods of Ancient Egypt as names that the people have named, and those having no basis in reality.

It is Allah who is Eternal, and can grant eternal life. Surah an-Nur, Q24:35, presents the example of Allah's Nur as lit from a flourishing olive tree, ..., and it is only Allah Himself Who Gives His Nur to whom He Wills.

The Forbidden Tree in The Garden, or the ones held sacred by the polytheists on this Earth, cannot grant immortality to anybody.

Allah has promised immortality for The Hereafter, not in this life. Q66:8 informs us that on that Day, the Prophets and the Believers will be praying to Allah to perfect their nur for them.

Gratitude for the Guidance

Then they both ate from it, so became apparent to them their shame and they began, (to) fasten on themselves from (the) leaves (of) Paradise. And disobeyed Adam his Lord, and erred.
[Al-Quran 20:121]

And I follow (the) religion (of) my forefathers, Ibrahim, and Ishaq and Yaqub. Not was for us that we associate with Allah any thing. That (is) from (the) Grace (of) Allah upon us, and upon the mankind but most (of) the men (are) not grateful.
[Al-Quran 12:38]

The forbidden tree was harmful for Adam and his wife. They were commanded to not even go near it. They did, and were tempted through the cunning Iblis, who misled them. When they ate from it, they suffered loss of natural clothing. One of the reasons people revere snakes is their youthful appearance, as they shed their skins several times a year. However, that is not what was decreed for the human. Adam made the mistake of trusting Iblis, the Satan. Adam obeyed Iblis, and disobeyed Allah. So, when he ate from the forbidden tree, he inflicted injustice/darkness upon his nafs. If Adam had been grateful for Allah's guidance, and followed the instructions, he would not have suffered the loss he was clearly warned about!

Chosen Again

Then chose him his Lord, and turned to him and guided (him).
[Al-Quran 20:122]

And thus will choose you your Lord and will teach you of (the) interpretation (of) the narratives and complete His Favor on you and on (the) family (of) Yaqub as He completed it on your two forefathers from before - Ibrahim and Ishaq. Indeed, your Lord (is) All-Knower, All-Wise."
[Al-Quran 12:6]

Allah knows those who will realise their mistakes and repent from them. Those who turn back to Allah, He turns back to them, and chooses them again. The words اجْتَبَاهُ and يَجْتَبِيكَ denote this re-choosing after their mistake. Adam repented and prayed for mercy. Allah chose him again, and guided him. Joseph made the mistake of disobeying his father's warning, and spent the rest of his life in Egypt. However, he was also chosen again, and made a Prophet, and in charge of the stores of the earth of Egypt. His elder brothers, Jacob's sons, also eventually repented and submitted to Allah's choice. Allah's perfect plan had encompassed their mistakes, and their designated roles. Similarly, we find the word اجْتَبَاكُمْ in Surah al-Hajj (Q22:78) where we learn that Allah has chosen us and named us Muslims.

Follow Allah's Guidance

He said, "Go down from it all, some of you to others (as) enemy. Then if comes to you from Me guidance then whoever, follows My guidance, then not he will go astray and not suffer.
[Al-Quran 20:123]

When they said, "Surely Yusuf and his brother (are) more beloved to our father than we, while we (are) a group. Indeed, our father (is) surely in an error clear.
Kill Yusuf or cast him (to) a land so will be free for you (the) face (of) your father, and you will be from after that a people righteous."
Said a speaker among them, "(Do) not kill Yusuf but throw him in the bottom (of) the well, will pick him some [the] caravan if you are doing."
[Al-Quran 12:8-10]

...

And certainly she did desire him, and he would have desired her, if not that he saw the proof (of) his Lord. Thus, that We might avert from him the evil and the immorality. Indeed, he (was) of Our slaves the sincere chosen.
[Al-Quran 12:24; translation edited in italics]

In this world, we meet many people, and those interactions lead to a variety of situations. To be able to navigate safely through all the dangers, we need to heed and follow Allah's guidance!

In the story of Joseph, first his brothers' jealousy gets the better of them, and they plot and plan against him. Then, the lady of the house invites him to sin and immorality. Then, he is imprisoned for no fault of his. Then, the person who is released from prison forgets to mention him to his lord. Then, his brothers, not knowing that they are speaking with him, falsely speak of a brother stating he was a thief.

(O mankind! Surely has come to you a convincing proof from your Lord, ...), and Q12:24 states that Joseph رَّأَىٰ بُرْهَانَ رَبِّهِ (he saw the proof (of) his Lord).

(Not We (have) sent down to you the Quran that you be distressed). The Quran is a reminder! Q20:117 reminds us that Adam was warned against the enmity of Iblis, and told: (So not (let) him drive you both from Paradise so (that) you would suffer.) (Then if comes to you from Me guidance then whoever, follows My guidance, then not he will go astray and not suffer.)

Remembrance & Belief in the Unseen

And whoever turns away from My remembrance, then indeed, for him (is) a life straitened and We will gather him (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection blind."
[Al-Quran 20:124]

Joseph, overlook this. While you, [wife,] ask forgiveness for your sin-you are greatly at fault."
[Al-Quran 12:29, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

...

[Joseph] said to the one he knew would be saved, "Mention me to your master [when you are free]," but Satan caused him to forget to mention [Joseph] to his master, and so he remained in prison for a few [more] years.
[Al-Quran 12:42, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

...

And the King said: "Bring him unto me, so that I may attach him to my own person." And when he had spoken with him, [the King] said: "Behold, [from] this day thou shalt be of high standing with us, invested with all trust!"
[Al-Quran 12:54, Translation: Muhammad Asad]

...

He said, "No blame will be uttered today against you. May God forgive you for your sins. He is the Most Merciful of those who are merciful.
[Now] take this shirt of mine and lay it over my father's face, and he will recover his sight. Then come [back] to me with all of your family."
As soon as the caravan [with which Jacob's sons were travelling] was on its way, their father said [to the people around him], "You may think I am senile, but I can smell Joseph."
They answered, "By God, you are still lost in that old illusion of yours."
But when the bearer of good news came [with Joseph's shirt], he laid it over his face, and he regained his sight, and said, "Did I not tell you, 'I know, from God, something that you do not know'?"
[Al-Quran 12:92-96, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

...

although you do not ask them for any reward for [reciting] it. It is [God's] reminder to all people.
How many signs are there in the heavens and on earth which they pass by and on which they turn their backs?
[Al-Quran 12:105, Translation: Safi Kaskas]

Remembrance of Allah is linked to belief in the unseen and having hope. As Q20:124 states: And whoever turns away from My remembrance, then indeed, for him (is) a life straitened and We will gather him (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection blind." As discussed in  Blue-Eyed Criminals, when snakes are in their shed cycle, they temporarily go blind. As discussed in The Cursed Tree, the criminals will encounter that tree as a trial, and will suffer its consequences.

As mentioned earlier, Satan plays a key role in forgetfulness!

Contrasted with that is Prophet Jacob's blindness due to grief for Joseph. He trusted Allah, and was gratefully patient through it all, and eventually his blindness was cured. Early on in Surah Ta Ha, Q20:39, the amazing trust of Moses' mother is mentioned, who was commanded (inspired) to put her baby in a chest and cast him in the water, and soon after the baby was returned to her with full protection and love of their enemy, the Pharaoh of Egypt. The reason the baby was returned to her was for the coolness of her eyes.

Q18 50-51 || Q12

 Adam & Joseph

Exploring the narrative about Adam in Surah al-Kahf (Q18:50-51) in the light of Surah Yusuf

Our Enemies

And when We said to the Angels, "Prostrate to Adam," so they prostrated except Iblis. (He) was of the jinn, and he rebelled against the Command (of) his Lord. Will you then take him and his offspring (as) protectors from other than Me, while they (are) to you enemies? Wretched for the wrongdoers (is) the exchange.
[Al-Quran 18:50]

Not you worship from besides Him but names which you have named, you and your forefathers, not (has) sent down Allah for it any authority. Not (is) the command but for Allah. He has commanded that not you worship but Him Alone. That (is) the religion the right, but most [the] men (do) not know.
[Al-Quran 12:40]

Allah alone is God, the only One worthy of worship. The correct religion is Allah's worship, and only His worship. No partners!

All false religions have their own mythologies about whom they believe to be their gods. These are but names and stories. Allah has never shared His Command or His Worship with any one.

As discussed in  جَانٌّ (Snake || Jinn), jinns are snakes. Snakes feature in almost all mythologies, and are visible religious symbols, and are especially revered among many polytheistic traditions.

Surah al-Kahf begins with a warning of a great war from near Allah. Q18:50 clearly informs us that Iblis and his progeny are our enemies. Surah al-Kahf concludes with the story of Dhul Qarnayn containing Yujuj and Majuj who were causing corruption on Earth. It also informs us that when the promise comes to pass, the barrier will be removed and they will swarm the Earth. We also know from Surah al-Anbiya that when this happens, the city that was destroyed will return. I understand this to be Babylon. Surah an-Naml warns us of a creature from the Earth who will speak with people...

The Sovereignty

Not I made them witness the creation (of) the heavens and the earth and not the creation (of) themselves their nafs and not I Am the One to take the misleaders (as) helper(s).
[Al-Quran 18:51; translation edited for clarity in italics]

My Lord, indeed, you have given of the sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of the events. Creator Separator (of) the heavens and the earth, You (are) my Protector, in the world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die (as) a Muslim, and join me with the righteous."
That (is) from the news (of) the unseen which We reveal to you. And not you were with them when they put together their plan while they (were) plotting.
[Al-Quran 12:101-102; Translation edited for clarity in italics]

From the first narration about Adam (Q2:30), we know that the purpose of creation of Adam is the Khilafat of the Earth. That was not acceptable to Iblis, and his rebellion is mentioned over and over again.

It is Allah who grants sovereignty to whom He Wills, upon whoever He Wills. Allah is always right in His Choice. Q18:51 clarifies that Iblis and his progeny are misleaders. Q18:51 also clarifies that Allah never took the misleaders as helpers! They were never in a position of knowledge and authority. They cannot, and will not,  guide humans right. As the time for the return of the city approaches, and the corrupters return, we need to seek Allah's cover, lest we are misled by the misleaders.

Q12:102 reminds us of the planning and plotting of Joseph's brothers, due to the enmity of Satan. The plotting of the plotters does not change or frustrate Allah's Plans. It only generates evidence against the plotters.

Adam and his progeny have been sent to this Earth. Presently, we have no access to the Gardens of Eternity. Prior to the mention of Adam and Iblis, we read about the disbelieving man with two flourishing gardens, and how it came to ruin.

The progeny of Adam have been made witness over their nafs, and the believers are also under a covenant and pledge. This life in this world is an opportunity to repent and reform, as we see the brothers of Joseph repentant upon what they did. There is still hope!

Q38 71-88 || Q12

Adam & Joseph

DRAFT

Exploring the narrative about Adam in Surah Saad (Q38:71-88) in the light of Surah Yusuf

Events in the Future

When said your Lord to the Angels, "Indeed, I Am going to create a human being bashran from clay.
[Al-Quran 38:71; translation edited to retain word bashran]

When said Yusuf to his father, "O my father! Indeed, I I saw one ten (i.e eleven) star(s) planet(s) and the sun and the moon; I saw them to me prostrating."
He said, "O my son! (Do) not relate your vision to your brothers lest they plan against you a plot. Indeed, the Shaitaan (is) to man an enemy open.
[Al-Quran 12:4-5; Translation edited for clarity]

Allah informed the angels that He planned to create a bashr from clay. From Surah Al-Baqarah, we know that the angels questioned the need for the creation of the khalifa, but did not rebel. Allah proved to them why this creature was necessary. The only one who rebelled was Iblis, the Shaitaan (Satan).

Allah informed Joseph about a future event through a dream. When he related the dream to his father, his father warned him to not to share his dream with his brothers, lest Satan incites them to plot against him.

Visions are a private matter, and, perhaps, only by speaking about them can they be known to others.

Knowing about the future may lead people to try to change it. Satan could only incite the brothers to plot against Joseph if they knew about the vision.

From the Bible, we learn that alas, Joseph did not heed to his father's advice, resulting in the brothers plotting against Joseph.

The Command of Prostration

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit Ruh, then fall down to him prostrating."
[Al-Quran 38:72; translation edited to retain the word Ruh]

When said Yusuf to his father, "O my father! Indeed, I I saw one ten (i.e eleven) star(s) planet(s) and the sun and the moon; I saw them to me prostrating."
He said, "O my son! (Do) not relate your vision to your brothers lest they plan against you a plot. Indeed, the Shaitaan (is) to man an enemy open.
Certainly were in Yusuf and his brothers signs for those who ask.
[Al-Quran 12:4-7; Translation edited in italics for clarity]

The angels were ordered to prostrate to the bashr that Allah was going to create only after Allah blew His Ruh into it. Allah creates with materials, and commands with His Words. Surah as-Sajdah (The Prostration, Q32:7-9) mentions the order: clay (طِين), progeny from water (سُلَالَةٍ مِّن مَّاءٍ مَّهِين), shape/proportion/fashion (سَوَّاهُ), and then breathing in the command (نَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ).
Note: Q17:85 informs us that The Ruh (الرُّوحِ) is from the commands/matters (أَمْرِ) of our Lord-Sustainer, that is Allah, and we haven't been given except very little knowledge about it.

At the tenth week of development, the embryo transitions into a fetus, and it is called so until birth. At the same tenth week, the fetus starts to breathe, and fetal breathing is detectable. However, regular and continuous breathing begins only after delivery. As the fetal lung matures, there is some correlation between the development of respiratory and sleep centres of the central nervous system, as indicated by breathing measurements made during REM and NREM periods. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is associated with dreams, and associated brain patterns are similar to those made while awake. REM state is generally detected in the third trimester of fetal development.

Jacob interpreted Joseph's vision of prostration to mean that Allah will choose Joseph to complete His favours upon the family of Jacob, as He did upon Abraham and Isaac before.

Surah Yusuf (Joseph) takes us through the various phases of Joseph's life till he is finally well-established.

The Act of Prostration

So prostrated the Angels all of them together.
[Al-Quran 38:73]

Certainly were in Yusuf and his brothers signs for those who ask.
[Al-Quran 12:7]

All the angels prostrated together, to Adam, with the exception mentioned in the next ayat (Q38:74).

Towards the end of Joseph's story in Surah Yusuf, when he was well-established as a high official in the Kingdom of Egypt, all his brothers prostrated to him, as was shown in the vision to him when he was just a young boy.

Arrogance & Rejection

Except Iblis; he was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
Except Iblis; he was arrogant and was of the rejectors.
[Al-Quran 38:74; re-translated for clarity in italics]

He said, "O my son! (Do) not relate your vision to your brothers lest they plan against you a plot. Indeed, the Shaitaan (is) to man an enemy open.
[Al-Quran 12:5]

Iblis was arrogant, and so he rejected Allah's command to prostrate to Adam.

According to The Bible, the brothers of Joseph plotted against him after he told them about his vision.

Conformation of ... between His Hands

He said, "O Iblis! What prevented you that you (should) prostrate to (one) whom I created with My Hands? Are you arrogant or are you of the exalted ones."
[Al-Quran 38:75]

Verily, (there) is in their stories a lesson for men (of) understanding. Not (it) is a narration invented, but a confirmation (of that) which (from) between his hands and a detailed explanation (of) all things, and a guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
[Al-Quran 12:111]

This last ayat of Surah Yusuf states The word يَدَيْ is alternately translated as before and hands. Surah Saad explicitly quotes Allah as asking Iblis what prevented him from prostrating to the one Allah Himself created with His Hands.

The Exalted Ones

He said, "O Iblis! What prevented you that you (should) prostrate to (one) whom I created with My Hands? Are you arrogant or are you of the exalted ones."
[Al-Quran 38:75]

When they said, "Surely Yusuf and his brother (are) more beloved to our father than we, while we (are) a group. Indeed, our father (is) surely in an error clear.
[Al-Quran 12:8]

Surah Saad focuses on the rich and powerful people, believers and non-believers. So, its no wonder that الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ (The High Chiefs) are mentioned in this surah (Q38:69) before commencing the narrative about Adam. In Q38:75, the question implies that الْعَالِينَ (The Exalted Ones), the High Chiefs were exempt from this command of prostration to Adam. Iblis was not a high chief, and thus not exempt.

Q38:69 also implies that there is a back story, but we have not been given knowledge about it. There is always great purpose in all that Allah does, and so there must be a very good reason why He created Adam, and commanded the angels to prostrate to him.

According to the Biblical account on Wikipedia, Jacob had twelve sons from four women. Joseph and his younger brother were sons of the same mother, while the ten elder brothers were from three different women. Joseph's elder half-brothers considered themselves as a group superior to Joseph and his younger full-brother!

The Better Group?

He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and You created him from clay."
[Al-Quran 38:76]

When they said, "Surely Yusuf and his brother (are) more beloved to our father than we, while we (are) a group. Indeed, our father (is) surely in an error clear.
[Al-Quran 12:8]

Iblis, a jinn, a snake, created from fire, ... putting all of the clues together, I believe that the comparison is between Ectotherms and Endotherms, as discussed in detail in: جَانٌّ (Snake || Jinn) and The Creation & Emergence of Species

Why the elder half-brothers considered themselves a superior group to Joseph and his full-brother is unclear.

The Chosen Sincere Slaves

Except Your slaves among them the chosen ones."
[Al-Quran 38:83]

And certainly she did desire him, and he would have desired her, if not that he saw the proof (of) his Lord. Thus, that We might avert from him the evil and the immorality. Indeed, he (was) of Our slaves the sincere.
[Al-Quran 12:24]

And said the king, "Bring to me him." I will select him for myself nafs." Then when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you (are) today with us firmly established (and) trusted."
[Al-Quran 12:54; translation edited in italics to retain the word nafs]

Joseph was one of the عِبَادِنَا الْمُخْلَصِينَ , and thus Satan could not tempt him into sin. Joseph was human, and he could have also desired her, but he was a chosen one, sincere. Surah as-Saaffaat presents examples of the chosen ones (الْمُخْلَصِينَ) while Surah az-Zumar discusses in detail the serving sincerely (مُخْلِصًا) in Deen.

Kings have their laws and govern according to it. Allah's Laws of Recompense are known as Allah's Deen. Allah chooses whom He wills for His Nafs. In Q20:41, we read Allah informing Moses that He has chosen him for His Nafs. In 12:54, we read about the King of Egypt choosing Joseph for his nafs.

Joseph was in polytheistic Egypt when these situations arose. Several centuries later, Moses was sent to the Pharaoh of Egypt. In Surah Ghafir, while Pharaoh was conspiring to kill Moses, we read about another man (Q40:28-44), an Egyptian, who was an undeclared believer. He reminds his people that Allah had earlier sent Joseph, and he had foretold the coming of a Messenger (Moses), but later on the people fell in doubt about it after Joseph perished (هَلَكَ). This is perhaps of significance as the Egyptians used to embalm to preserve the dead as mummies. Even though Joseph's body was embalmed, he perished, and as per his will, his bones were taken away from Egypt when Allah rescued the the Bani Israel, and punished the Pharaoh and his people.

In Q40:44, that Egyptian believer is quoted as stating: And you will remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah (is) All-Seer of (His) slaves." The next two ayaat informs us that: So protected him Allah (from the) evils that they plotted, and enveloped (the) people (of) Firaun (the) worst punishment, The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And (the) Day (will be) established the Hour, "Cause to enter (the) people (of) Firaun (in the) severest punishment."

Hell: The Final Prison

Surely I will fill Hell with you and those who follow you among them all."
[Al-Quran 38:85]

And not most (of) the mankind, even though you desire, (will be) believers.
[Al-Quran 12:103]

Until when gave up hope the Messengers, and thought that they certainly were denied, then came to them Our help, and was saved whom We willed. And not (can) be repelled Our punishment from the people (who are) criminals.
[Al-Quran 12:110]

While there are people who err and then repent and attempt to reform, there are some who refuse to repent and reform. Hell is the destined eternal abode for the criminals.

The Messenger of Allah

Say, "Not I ask of you for it any payment, and not I am of the ones who pretend.
[Al-Quran 38:86]

And not you ask them for it any reward. Not (is) it but a reminder to the worlds.
[Al-Quran 12:104]

The Messenger of Allah does not pretend to know everything (Q38:69-70), nor does he charge any fee for his preaching. He is simply reminding the worlds.

The Reminder

Not it (is) except a Reminder to the worlds.
[Al-Quran 38:87]

That (is) from the news (of) the unseen which We reveal to you. And not you were with them when they put together their plan while they (were) plotting.
[Al-Quran 12:102]

The story of Adam and Iblis needs to be taken on faith, for us to beware of the enmity of Satan, and understand the grave danger we are in.

Surah Saad presents us examples of rich, powerful men. Surah Yusuf presents us with examples of plots and plans.

Our inheritance awaits us. On the Day of Judgement, Allah will shower His Mercy on the chosen inheritors of the Gardens of Eternity, and complete His Favours upon them.

After a Time

And surely you will know its information after a time."
[Al-Quran 38:88]

So when they took him and agreed that they put him in (the) bottom (of) the well. But We inspired to him, "Surely, you will inform them about affair this. while they (do) not perceive."
[Al-Quran 12:15]

Allah's promise of Judgement and sorting into Heaven and Hell is true. Just like Joseph's dream came true. Just like what was inspired to Joseph, when he was thrown in the well, came true. The Prophets of Allah have spoken the truth. We will face our deeds, just like Joseph's brothers were reminded of it when they least expected it.  We will settle in another place, just like the family of Joseph migrated, to settle in another land. We can hope for Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness for those who repent and uphold Allah's Deen.
