Mission of the Messengers – XXIII
Abstract
In its command to adhere to the right religion, Q30:30 uses the term fitrat-Allah (فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ) on which humans have been فَطَرَ. The Quran uses the term fāṭir (فَاطِر) as one of the acts of Allah. This study attempts to understand its meaning through the words its root alphabets fā ṭā rā (ف ط ر) are used in The Quran.
Learning: Fatir means The Separator, the One who separates the primal matter to be used to build each and every creation, and maintains their unique identity, such that even when they are mixed up, He is able to separate them again. The One Who has separated everything into individual units, and has commanded: No change (should there be) in the creation (of) Allah.

So set your face to the لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا
فِطْرَتَ (made by) Allah (upon) which He has فَطَرَ mankind [on it].
No change (should there be) in the creation (of) Allah.
That (is) الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ, but most people (do) not know.
[Al-Quran 30:30]
Q30:30 contains a direct command prohibiting change in Allah' creation, and informs that it is the right religion. It also uses the unique term فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ , which occurs in this noun form only once in The Quran. Scholars translate this term very vaguely. The lack of clarity renders the rest of the ayah ineffective in terms of the practical application of this command. The Quran uses the term fāṭir (فَاطِر) as one of the steps in the act of creation by Allah. This study attempts to understand its meaning through the words its root alphabets fā ṭā rā (ف ط ر) are used in.

And they say, "Is it when we are bones and crumbled particles, will we surely (be) resurrected (as) a creation new."
Say, "Be stones or iron.
Or a creation of what (is) great in your breasts." Then they will say, "Who will restore us?" Say, "He Who فَطَرَ you (the) first time." Then they will shake at you their heads and they say, "When (will) it (be)?" Say, "Perhaps that (it) will be soon."
(On) the Day He will call you and you will respond with His Praise, and you will think, not you had remained except a little (while).

Q17:49-52 states that no matter what state we may perish and decompose into after death, Allah will resurrect as he فَطَرَ us before.
فَطَرَ is always mentioned as a singular, exclusive act of Allah.
In Surah Qaaf, we read a similar mention of separation and reconstitution of what we are composed of:

Qaf. By the Quran, the Glorious.
Nay, they wonder that has come to them a warner from them. So say the disbelievers, "This (is) a thing amazing.
What! When we die and have become dust. That (is) a return far."
Certainly, We know what diminishes the earth of them, and with Us (is) a Book guarded.
...
(The) Day will split the earth from them, hurrying. That (is) a gathering for Us easy.
[Al-Quran 50:1-4 ... 50:44]
Note: Since the Gatherers are in the plural We, therefore, as expected, the term فَطَرَ is not used here.
However, note that again the material separation is being highlighted through the statement 'will split the earth from them'

In Surah al-Anaam, Prophet Abraham uses the term فَطَرَ to explain his declaration that he is not a polytheist:
And thus We show(ed) Ibrahim the kingdom (of) the heavens and the earth, so that he would be among the ones who are certain.
So when covered over him the night, he saw a planet. He said, "This (is) my Lord." But when it set, he said "I (do) not like the ones that set."
When he saw the moon rising he said, "This (is) my Lord." But when it set he said, "If (does) not guide me my Lord, I will surely be among the people who went astray."
When he saw the sun rising he said, "This (is) my Lord, this (is) greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people! Indeed, I am free of what you associate (with Allah)."
Indeed, I [I] have turned my face to the One Who فَطَرَ the heavens and the earth (as) a true monotheist, and not I (am) of the polytheists.
He said, "Nay, your Lord (is the) Lord (of) the heavens and the earth, the One Who فَطَرَ them and I am to that of the witnesses.
[Al-Quran 21:56]
Q30:30 begins with the directive to turn our faces to لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا . In Q6:79 quoted above, Prophet Abraham also declares being a hanif, variously translated as: monotheist, upright, firmly and truly, pure natural believer, and so forth. In Surah az-Zukhruf, Prophet Abraham dissociates himself from the worship of everyone except the One who فَطَرَ him:
O my people! Not I ask you for it any reward. Not (is) my reward except from the One Who فَطَرَ me. Then will not you use reason?
[Al-Quran 11:51]
|----------|
And what (is) for me (that) not I worship the One Who فَطَرَ me and to Whom you will be returned?
[Al-Quran 36:22]

And they say, "Has taken the Most Gracious a son."
Verily, you have put forth a thing atrocious.
Almost the heavens get torn therefrom, and splits asunder the earth and collapse the mountain (in) devastation
That they invoke to the Most Gracious a son.
And not is appropriate for the Most Gracious that He should take a son.
Not all who (are) in the heavens and the earth but (will) come (to) the Most Gracious (as) a slave.
Verily, He has enumerated them and counted them, a counting.
And all of them (will) come (to) Him (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection alone.

Almost the heavens break up from above them, and the Angels glorify (the) praise (of) their Lord and ask for forgiveness for those on the earth. Unquestionably, indeed, Allah, He (is) the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Q6:75 quoted above informs us that Abraham was being shown the kingdom of the heavens and earth. Q33:7 informs us of the ratification of the covenant taken from the prophets. In Surah al-Anbiya, Prophet Abraham even bears witness to the One who فَطَرَ the heavens and earth:
He said, "Nay, your Lord (is the) Lord (of) the heavens and the earth, the One Who فَطَرَ them and I am to that of the witnesses.
[Al-Quran 21:56]
The Heavens and the Earth are composed of a variety of galaxies, stars, planets and other bodies, each a separate, unique unit and floating in its own orbit. Q13:2 & Q31:10 draw attention to the fact that the Heaven has been raised without pillars!
Except the One Who فَطَرَ me; and indeed, He will guide me."
And he made it a word lasting among his descendents, so that they may return.

In Surah Hud, when Prophet Hud was preaching Monotheism to his people, he tells them:
O my people! Not I ask you for it any reward. Not (is) my reward except from the One Who فَطَرَ me. Then will not you use reason?

In Surah Yasin, the man who believed the Messengers, exhorts the people to follow those who do not ask for any reward, and poses the question:

The Quran relates a public show of strength between the most skilled magicians in Ancient Egypt and Prophet Moses. When Moses' staff (stick) turned into a serpent and devoured the magicians' ropes and staffs, which appeared as snakes due to the optical illusion caused by their magic, those magicians immediately submitted to Allah, the Lord of Moses and Aaron. The Pharaoh, whom they previously held as their lord, threatened them with crucifixion for changing their faith. Those expert magicians responded thus:
They said, "Never we will prefer you over what has come to us of the clear proofs, and the One Who فَطَرَ us. So decree whatever you (are) decreeing. Only you can decree (for) this life (of) the world.
In Surah Maryam, associating a son with Allah is denounced sternly, and the same root فَطَّرْ is used, translated here as torn:

Surah ash-Shura also employs the exact same word, translated here as break:
Almost the heavens break up from above them, and the Angels glorify (the) praise (of) their Lord and ask for forgiveness for those on the earth. Unquestionably, indeed, Allah, He (is) the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Then return the vision twice (again). Will return to you the vision humbled while it (is) fatigued.
Then return the vision twice (again). Will return to you the vision humbled while it (is) fatigued.
Fāṭir (فَاطِر)
Six ayaat in The Quran introduce Allah as the fāṭir of the Skies/Heavens and Earth. This step of creation is mentioned specifically and exclusively about Allah only. These ayaat also inform us of some qualities of the Fatir:
Note: In the following translations, while retaining the Arabic word فَاطِرِ, I'm also adding the translation as Separator:
Say, "Is it other than Allah I (should) take (as) a protector, فَاطِرِ (Separator) (of) the heavens and the earth, while (it is) He Who feeds and not He is fed?" Say, "Indeed I [I] am commanded that I be (the) first who submits (to Allah) and not be of the polytheists."

Steps in The Act of Creation
The Quran employs various words to convey the various steps in the act of creation:
There is an entire surah titled Fatir (فَاطِرُ). Badi (بَدِيعُ) and Khaliq (خَالِقُ) are also generally translated Creator, but Badi is one who originates or begins something new, innovates, while Khaliq is one who, if I have studied its usage in the Qur’an correctly, creates with some pre-exiting material, such as humans from teen, jinn from naar, ... So, most probably, the following may be assumed:
The Inventor, the One who initiates the process of creation or creates new things for the very first time, creates the originals
- فَاطِرُ : The Separator, the One who separates the primal matter to be used to build each and every creation, and maintains their unique identity, such that even when they are mixed up, He is able to separate them again
The Creator: the one who uses the materials to create the hardware and software
The Maker: the one who assigns tasks
From the fā ṭā rā (ف ط ر) ayaat quoted above, it seems quite clear that what this word implies is:
From Surah al-Fussilat (Explained in Detail), we learn that:
- separation or breaking up of the proto-matter into unique parts, such that no matter what form of matter they may assume, essentially the proto-matter (or fundamental particle or string) is marked out as unique to each individual creation.
- keeping each unique object separate
- maintaining the Heavens and Earth apart such that they do not collapse upon each other in a heap
From Surah al-Fussilat (Explained in Detail), we learn that:
Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: "Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly." They said: "We do come (together), in willing obedience."
So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge.
So, early on in the process of creation, the earth and the skies were created separately, and then united into a primordial smoke (suspended particles) before being separated again. Then Allah separated them and decreed the natural laws which they are required to obey and be governed by.
The unification into a primordial smoke seems to endorse the Grand Unification Epoch in the Grand Unified Theory when all the fundamental forces were not distinct yet.
The primordial smoke being separated ties in with the concept of fundamental particles or strings, and their being organised into various forms, as posited by the various theories of physics.
The separation into seven skies/heavens seems to tie in with the concept of the multiverse; with the difference that according to The Quran the seven skies/heavens are arranged in concentric layers (Q67:3).
The assignment to each sky/heaven its duties and command seems to tie in with the concept of various dimensions, each with its own set of natural laws.
The Quran also informs us that when Allah creates, He speaks His commands, and it comes into existence:
String Theory postulates that the Universe is a symphony, composed of vibrating strings (the most fundamental one-dimensional objects, as opposed to point-like particles).
In Surah Fatir (فَاطِر), we learn that all of creation is being upheld in order by Allah alone:
The earth and skies are then indeed a manifestation of Allah's words, through which He brings everything into being, and maintains everything on a constant, continuous basis! And the entire creation responds with the praise of Allah:

Q4:1, Q6:98 and Q7:189 inform us that we have been created from a single nafs. Q42:11 informs us that Allah, our Fatir, has appointed mates from our nafs, and multiplies us thereby. Revisiting Q30:30 quoted at the beginning of this post and editing the translation:

So set your face to the لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا
No change (should there be) in the creation (of) Allah.
Surah ar-Rum (Q30:30) warns us not to make changes in the creation of Allah: The surah goes on to inform us why we see corruption on earth in spite of Allah constantly guarding (Q2:255) and upholding (Q35:41), and why both Q17:44 and Q35:41inform us that Allah is Ever-Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving
The last ayat of Surah Fatir (فَاطِر), states that:
Surah Ibrahim concludes thus:
The Quran explains creation, and promises an annihilation and a recreation; it presents vital lessons from our world history and its future implications. It warns us against wronging our nafs, lest we lose it forever.
Say, "Have you seen your partners those whom you call besides Allah?" Show Me what they have created from the earth, or for them (is) a share in the heavens. Or have We given them a Book so they (are) on a clear proof therefrom? Nay, not promise the wrongdoers some of them (to) others except delusion.
Indeed, Allah upholds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, not can uphold them any one after Him.
Indeed, He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
Indeed, He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.
The earth and skies are then indeed a manifestation of Allah's words, through which He brings everything into being, and maintains everything on a constant, continuous basis! And the entire creation responds with the praise of Allah:

Glorified is He and Exalted is He above what they say (by) height great.
Glorify [to] Him the seven heavens and the earth and whatever (is) in them. And (there is) not any thing except glorifies His Praise, but not you understand their glorification.
Indeed, He is Ever-Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving."
Ayat-ul-Kursi (The Ayah of The Government)
A king governs his kingdom. The extent of the kingdom is the regions where the king is the sovereign:
Allah - there is no deity except
Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
[Al-Quran 2:255, Translator: Sahih International]
Yet, in this temporal life, Allah grants us the liberty to choose. He does not impose His DEEN on any one who is unwilling to submit to Allah. However, the consequence of not willingly submitting is made quite clear:
(There is) no compulsion in the religion.
Surely has become distinct the right (path) from the wrong.
Then whoever disbelieves in false deities and believes in Allah, then surely he grasped the handhold - [the] firm, (which) not (will) break [for it].
And Allah (is) All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Allah (is the) Protecting Guardian (of) those who believe[d]. He brings them out from [the] darkness towards [the] light.
And those who disbelieve(d) their guardians (are) the evil ones, they bring them out from the light towards [the] darkness. Those (are the) companions (of) the Fire, they in it will abide forever.

And if Allah (were to) punish the people for what they have earned, not He would leave on its back any creature.
But He gives them till a term appointed.
And when comes their term, then indeed, Allah is of His slaves All-Seer.
But He gives them till a term appointed.
And when comes their term, then indeed, Allah is of His slaves All-Seer.
Surah Ibrahim concludes thus:
And (do) not think (that) Allah (is) unaware of what do the wrongdoers. Only He gives them to a Day will stare in it the eyes.
Racing ahead, raised up their heads, not returning towards them their gaze, and their hearts (are) empty.
And warn the mankind (of) a Day (when) will come to them the punishment, then will say those who did wrong, "Our Lord! Respite us for a term short; we will answer Your call and we will follow the Messengers." "Had not you sworn before not for you any end?
And you dwelt in the dwellings (of) those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them, and We put forth for you the examples."
And indeed they planned their plan, but with Allah (was) their plan, even if was their plan that should be moved by it the mountains.
So (do) not think (that) Allah will fail (to) keep His Promise (to) His Messengers. Indeed, Allah (is) All-Mighty, Owner (of) Retribution.
(On the) Day will be changed the earth (to) other (than) the earth, and the heavens, and they will come forth before Allah, the One, the Irresistible.
And you will see the criminals, (on) that Day bound together in the chains,
Their garments of tar, and will cover their faces the Fire.
So that Allah may recompense each soul (for) what it earned. Indeed, Allah (is) Swift (in) the reckoning.
This (is) a Message for the mankind, that they may be warned with it, and that they may know that only He (is) One God, and that may take heed men (of) understanding.
