[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

Surah al-A'raf, ... the narratives

...

Surah al-A'raf begins with the general mention about prospering communities disbelieving, and eventually meeting their fate. When the punishment comes to them, they admit that they themselves were the zalimeen.

Then it goes on to narrate some specific events:

Adam & Iblis (Q7:11-27

The first narration begins with the creation of humans, giving them shape and form, and then the command to the angels to prostrate to Adam. They all prostrated except Iblis. He refused to obey the command of Allah. His arrogance is based on the material he has been created with. He believes the 'naar' he has been created with is better than 'teen' that Adam has been created with. For his arrogance, he gets expelled, degraded. He prays for reprieve until the Day of Resurrection. His prayer is granted. He blames Allah for the legal error he made, and states that he will surely sit on Allah's Straight Path in wait for humans, to hinder them from before, behind, right and left, and that most them won't be grateful. He is commanded to depart, reproached and expelled, and that whoever follows him, hell will be filled with them all.

Adam and his wife were told to dwell (uskun) in the Garden, eat from whatever you will, but forbidden from even going near this tree, lest you become of those in the darkness (zalimeen).

Shaitan whispered to them, to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said that their Lord had not forbidden this tree except that they become angels or become immortals.

He promised solemnly to them both, that he was to them both, from their sincere advisors.

— Samiya Illias

So, he misled them both through deception. So, when they both tasted from the tree, their hidden parts became manifest, and they began to cover / attach upon themselves the leaves of the Garden. And their Lord called out to them, 'didn't I forbid you from this tree? and tell you that Shaitan is your clear enemy?'

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

— Saheeh International

They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."

— Al-Hilali & Khan

They said: 'Our Rabb (Lord-Sustainer), we have put our nafs in darkness (zlm), and if You do not cover us and if You do not have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers'.

Samiya Illias

They were commanded to descend from there (The Garden) as enemies to each other, and that upon the Earth will be your place of dwelling and your means of livelihood for a time. There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.

The next two ayaat inform Bani Adam that libas (clothing) has been bestowed upon them to hide their shame, and as an adornment. The libas-e-taqwa (their original natural clothing, which they lost by not keeping their duty to Allah) was better. That this is from the Signs of Allah, perhaps you will remember. The Bani Adam are warned to not to let Shaitan (Satan) put you in trial as he put your parents in trial, getting them expelled from The Garden, stripping off their libas (clothing) from them, to expose their concealed parts. Indeed, he (Satan) and his tribe watches you from where you cannot see them. Indeed, We have made the shayateen (satans) the allies of those who do not believe.

DRAFT

Q7:53

Common Theme

Certainly Noah, Hud, Saleh, Lot, Shoaib, and Moses were sent to their people. Each called upon them to keep their taqwa (duty to Allah). The ruling class / chieftains / leaders (الۡمَلَاُ) of the nation rejected the message. Most of the people followed their leaders and adhered to their false religion. Very few hearkened to the Messenger of Allah. Eventually, they were punished for their crimes.

Messenger Noah  & His People (Q7:59-64)

Certainly, We sent Noah to his people. He said, O my people, worship Allah, you have no other deity except him. I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day. But the leaders of his people said, we surely see that you are surely misguided. He said, O my people, there is no misguidance in me, but I am a Messenger from the Lord of the Worlds. I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I advise you, and I know from Allah what you do not know. Do you wonder that there has come to you reminder from your Lord, upon a man from among you, that he may warn you, and that you may keep your taqwa (duty to Allah), so you might receive mercy? But they rejected him, so We saved him and those with him, in a ship, and We drowned those who denied Our signs, indeed, they were a people blind.

Messenger Hud  & The Aad (Q7:65-72)

And to the Aad, We sent their brother Hud. He said, O my people, worship Allah, you have no other god but Him. Then, will you not keep your taqwa (duty towards Allah)? Said the leaders who disbelieved from his people, Indeed we see you in foolishness, and indeed we think you are of the liars. He said, O my people, there is no foolishness in me, but I am a Messenger from the Lord of the Worlds. I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy advisor. Do you wonder that there has come to you reminder from your Lord, upon a man from among you, that he may warn you, and remember He made you successors (khulafaa) after the people of Noah, and increased you in stature extensively. So, remember the favours of Allah, that you may succeed. They said, have you come to us so that we worship Allah alone, and leave what our fathers worshipped? Then bring to us what you promise, if you are truthful. He said, already has fallen upon you, from your Lord, impurity and anger. Do you dispute with me regarding the names you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority? Then wait, indeed, I am with you among those who wait. So, We saved him and those with him, through Our mercy, and cut the root of those who denied Our signs, and they were not believers.

Messenger Saleh  & The Thamud (Q7:73-79)

And to the Thamud, their brother Saleh. He said, O my people, worship Allah, you have no other god but Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord: this is Allah's she-camel (naqatu-Allah), as a sign for you. So let her freely eat from Allah's land, and do not touch her with harm, lest seizes you a painful  punishment. And remember when He made you successors (khulafaa) after the Aad, and gave you  station in the Earth. And you choose palaces in the plains, and hew homes for yourselves in the mountains. So, remember the favours of Allah, and do not commit evil in the Earth, as corrupters. Said the leaders who were arrogant among their people to those who were weak who had believed among them, 'do you actually know that Saleh has been sent from your Lord?' they replied, 'indeed we, in that which he has been sent with, are believers'. Said those who were arrogant, 'indeed we, in that which you believe, are disbelievers'. So, they made barren (aqaru) the she-camel (naqata), defying the command of their Lord, and said, O Saleh, bring us what you promise us, if you are indeed from those sent. So, seized them the earthquake, so they became in their homes, fallen prone. So he turned away from them saying, O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord, and advised you, but you do not love the advisors.

Messenger Lot  & his people (Q7:80-84)

And Lot, when said he to his people, 'do you commit such immorality (al-fahisha) that has preceded you with it no one in the worlds (al-aalameen)? you lust after men instead of women, you are indeed abusers (musrifoon).' And not responded his people except they said, 'expel them from your land, they are a people who remain pure'. So, we saved him and his family, except his woman, she was of those who got covered in or became dust (al-ghabireen), and We rained upon them a rain (or stones). So see what was the end of the criminals.

Messenger Shoaib  & his people (Q7:85-93)

And to the Madyan, We sent their brother Shoaib. He said, O my people, worship Allah, you have no other god but Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So give just measure (فَاَوۡفُوا الۡكَيۡلَ) and weight (وَالۡمِيۡزَانَ), and do not deprive people of their things (النَّاسَ اَشۡيَآءَهُمۡ), and do not spread corruption (تُفۡسِدُوۡا) in the Earth after it has been reformed (بَعۡدَ اِصۡلَاحِهَا), that is better for you, if you should be believers. And do not sit on every path (صِرَاطٍ), threatening and hindering from Allah's Way (سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ), those who believe in Him, seeking to make it seem deviant. And remember when you were few, and He increased you. And see how was the end of the corrupters (عَاقِبَةُ الۡمُفۡسِدِيۡنَ‏).

And if a group of you believes in what I am sent with, and a group does not believe, have patience till Allah judges between us, and He is the Best to decide

Said the leaders who were arrogant from his people, Certainly we will expel you, O Shoaib, and those with have believed, with you, from our town, or certainly you must return to our religious persuasion (مِلَّتِنَا). He said, Even if we are unwilling? We would certainly be fabricating a lie Upon Allah if we return to your religious persuasion after Allah has saved us from it, and not it is for us to return to it unless if Wills Allah, He is our Lord, encompasses our Lord everything in His Knowledge, Upon Allah we put our trust, our Lord decide between us and our people with right (بِالۡحَـقِّ), and You are the Best to decide (خَيۡرُ الۡفٰتِحِيۡنَ‏).

Said the leaders who disbelieved from his people, If you follow Shoaib, you will surely be losers.

So, seized them the earthquake, so they became in their homes, fallen prone. Those who had falsified Shoaib were wiped out as if they had never flourished there, those who had falsified Shoaib, they were the losers.

So he turned away from them, and said, O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord, and advised you, so how can I grieve for a disbelieving people.

...

Messenger Moses, the Pharaoh  & his chiefs (Q7:103-136)

Then, after them, We resurrected/ raised/ appointed/ sent (بَعَثۡنَا) Moses with Our Signs, towards Pharaoh and his religious rulers/ leaders (مَلَا۟ئِهٖ), but they dealt with Our Signs unjustly/ darkly (فَظَلَمُوۡا بِهَا), so look how was the end/ penalty/ fate (عَاقِبَةُ) of the corrupters (الۡمُفۡسِدِيۡنَ‏).

And Moses said, O Pharaoh, indeed I am a Messenger from the Lord-Sustainer of all the worlds. Obligated to say nothing about Allah except the truth, I have brought to you with clear evidence from your Lord-Sustainer, so send with me Bani Israel.

He said, if you have brought a sign, then bring it forth, if you are of those who speak the truth.

So, he threw his staff, and it became a serpent, evident.

And he drew out his hand, so it was white for all to see.

Said the chiefs of the people of Pharaoh, indeed this is a magician/ sorcerer, learned/ knowledgable.

Who seeks to evict you from your land. So what do you instruct?

They said, postpone/ delay him and his brother, and send in all the cities, gatherers

To bring you every magician/ sorcerer, learned/ knowledgable.

And came all the magicians/ sorcerers to Pharaoh, they said, indeed for us a reward if we overcome?

He replied, Yes, and certainly you will be among those closest to me.

They asked, O Moses, either you throw, or shall we be the first throwers?

He said, throw. So when they threw, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and struck them with awe, and brought a magic (spell), mighty

Then We inspired Moses that throw your staff, so it it devoured that which they were faking.

So was established reality, and vanished what they were doing.

So they were overcome there, and returned degraded.

And threw themselves down the magicians/ sorcerers, in prostration

They said, we believe in the Lord-Sustainer of the worlds

Lord-Sustainer of Moses and Aaron

Said Pharaoh, you believed in Him before I gave you permission! this is a plan which you have planned in the city, to evict those who live in it, so soon you will know.

Certainly I will cut-off your hands and feet, from opposite sides, then I will crucify you all.

They said, Surely to our Lord-Sustainer we will return

and not you take vengeance on us except that we have believed in the signs of our Lord-Sustainer when they came to us, Our Lord-Sustainer, pour upon us patience, and cause us to die Muslims.

Surah al-A'raf, ... pay attention to receive mercy

..

Q7:1-3

Alif-Lâm-Mîm-Sâd. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’ân and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings.]

(This is the) Book (the Qur’ân) sent down unto you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), so let not your breast be narrow therefrom, that you warn thereby; and a reminder unto the believers.

[Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) to these idolaters (pagan Arabs) of your folk:] Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur’ân and Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah), and follow not any Auliyâ’ (protectors and helpers who order you to associate partners in worship with Allâh), besides Him (Allâh). Little do you remember!

[Al-Quran 7:1-3, Translation: Al-Hilali & Khan]

We need to remember:

  • that everyone will be questioned
  • that we are being watched constantly
  • that on that Day, it is the Haqq which will have weight
    • those whose scale is heavy will be successful
    • those whose scale is light will lose their nafs because of the Zulm they were doing towards Our Signs
  • that we have been provided with our livelihoods and the economic system
    • that we show very little gratitude
  • that Iblis has sworn to harm us all
    • that Iblis lied and made false promises to our forefather Adam to mislead him
    • that Iblis caused our forefather Adam immense harm and loss by posing as a sincere well-wisher
  • that Adam confessed that they both had put their Nafs (soul) in darkness
    • that Adam prayed that if Allah did not cover them and surround them both in His Mercy, they would certainly be among the losers
  • that Allah sent them all to Earth as enemies to each other
    • that Allah sent them all to Earth as settlement and enjoyment for a time
  • that Allah blessed Bani Adam with clothes to cover and hide and adorn our naked bodies
    • that our clothes are from the Signs of Allah
    • that Iblis and his tribe watches us from where we cannot see them
  • that clothing and deen (religious recompense) is linked
    • that as Allah originally made us, so He will raise us again
    • that we should adorn ourselves, and eat and drink at every masjid (time and place of prostration)
    • that we should not indulge in israaf (misuse)
  • that Allah has not forbidden adornment and good food
    • that the adornments that have been produced, and the good things to eat, are especially for the believers in this world, and exclusively for them in the Hereafter
  • Allah has forbidden
    • immoralities, both open and hidden
    • sinfulness
    • rebellion / oppression without right
    • joining partners with Allah for which Allah has sent down no authority
    • saying things about Allah of which you have no knowledge
  • every religious nation (ummah) has an appointed Hour (asSaata), and it cannot be advanced or delayed
    • that we need to heed to Allah's Ayaat when Allah's Messengers recite them
    • that we need to keep our duty to Allah, and reform ourselves accordingly
    • that doing so will save us from grief (of what we lost) and fear (of what will happen to us)
  • that those who belie and are arrogant towards them will be the Companions of the Fire, eternally living there
    • that the greatest Zulm (darkness) is to invent about Allah and/or deny His Ayaat (signs)
    • that for such people, the doors of the sky will not open, and they will not be allowed to ascend to The Garden until the Jml (camel) can pass through the eye of the needle, such will be the recompense of the criminals
    • that Jahanam (fire of Hell) will be their bed and covering, such is the recompense of those (who put their nafs (souls) in) darkness
  • that those who believe and do small acts of reform, no load is put on any nafs except that it can bear,  they will be the Companions of the Garden, eternally living there
    • all resentment will have been removed from within their breasts
    • rivers will flow beneath them
    • they will gratefully praise Allah (Alhamadolillah) for having guided them
    • they will admit that they could never have been guided had Allah not guided them
    • they will state that the Messengers had come with the truth
    • it will be said to them: this is the Garden that you inherit because of what you used to do
  • the Companions of the Garden will call out to the Companions of the Fire
    • stating that they have found the promise of their Lord true
    • and asking if they have found the promise of their Lord true
    • the Companions of the Fire will respond: Yes
    • then a caller will announce that the Zalimun (those in the darkness) have been removed from Allah's Mercy
    • those who averted people from the way of Allah,
    • sought to make it deviant
    • and rejected the Hereafter
  • there will be a partition between them, and on the Heights (A'raf) will be men
    • who will recognise everyone by their marks
    • they will call out to the Companions of the Garden: Salamun alaikum
    • they will not yet have entered it, but are hopeful with certainty
  • and when their vision turns towards the Companions of the Fire
    • they will say, 'our Lord, do not place us with the Zalimun (those in the darkness)'
    • and the Companions of the A'raf (Heights) will call out to the men they recognise by their marks: 'of what benefit was what you collected (people / wealth), and your arrogance?
  • 'are these the people you assumed Allah would never show Mercy? Enter Paradise, no fear shall be upon you, nor shall ye grieve' (it is assumed that this statement is about the Companions of the al-A'raf, who were waiting for a decision regarding their fate).
  • the Companions of the Fire will call out to the Companions of the Garden to pour upon us some water or what rizq Allah has provided you with
    • they will be informed that Allah has forbidden both of those to the Kafireen (rejectors / ingrates)
    • those who took their Deen (religion / recompense) as distraction and amusement
    • and the worldly life deluded them
    • We will forget them just as they forgot the Meeting of This Day
    • and they used to reject Our Signs
  • We had certainly bought to them a Book
    • detailed with knowledge
    • as a guidance and a Mercy to a people who believe
    • do they await except its taweel (outcome)?
    • the Day that it appears, those who had neglected it before, will say
      • the Messengers of our Lord had come with al-Haqq
      • now are there any intercessors for us who would intercede on our behalf
      • or can we be sent back to do other than what we used to do
      • they would have lost their Nafs (soul)
      • and they were led astray by that which they used to invent
  • Indeed, your Lord-Sustainer (Rabb) is Allah
    • who created the Skies and Earth in six days
    • and then established Himself over the Throne
    • He covers the night with the day, chasing it rapidly
    • He created the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars, subjected by His Command
    • unquestionably, His is the Creation and Command
    •  Blessed is Allah, Flourishes Allah (tabaraka Allahu
    • Lord of all the worlds (رَبُّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‏)
  • Call upon your Rabb in humility and privately
  • He does not like the transgressors
  • and do not corrupt the Earth after it has been reformed
  • and call upon Him in fear and hope
  • indeed, His Mercy is near the Muhsineen (those who do good deeds, excellently)
  • it is He who sends winds as good tidings before His Mercy
    • until when they carry heavy rain clouds
    • We drive it to a land that is dead
    • pour upon it and bring forth from all of its fruits
    • thus will the dead be brought forth
    • perhaps you will remember
    • from the good land comes forth vegetation, with the permission of its Lord
    • from the bad land emerges with difficulty and sparingly
    • thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful
  • Messenger Noah (Q7:59-64)
  • Messenger Hud (Q7:65-72)
  • Messenger Saleh (Q7:73-79)
  • Messenger Lot (Q7:80-84)
  • Messenger Shoaib (Q7:85-93)
  • not We sent to any city a prophet but
    • We seized its people with extreme poverty (wealth-wise), and extreme hardship (health-wise), that they might humble themselves
    • then We changed the bad to the good till a state of prosperity and affluence
    • and they said: our fathers were also touched with hardship and ease
    • then We seized them all of a sudden while they were unaware
    • if only the people of the cities had believed and kept their duty (taqwa),
      • We would have opened for them barakat (blessings to flourish) from the sky and earth
    • but they belied, so We seized them for what they used to earn
    • did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the night while they were asleep?
    • did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were playing?
    • did they feel secure from the Plan of Allah?
    • but who feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are losers
    • hasn't it been a reminder for the people who have inherited the earth after those who lived there before that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins
    • and We seal up the hearts of those who do not listen
    • those are the cities, We relate to you some of their news
      • and certainly their messengers came to them with clear proofs
      • but they were not to believe in that which they had belied before
      • thus We seal up the hearts of the rejectors
      • and We did not find in most of them any (keeping of their) covenant
      • and most of them We found to be defiantly disobedient
  • Messenger Moses (Q7:103-onwards)
    • ... <highlights> ...
    • seventy men for the meeting (Q7:155)
    • follow Nabi Ummi mentioned in Taurat and Injeel (Q7:157)
    • and among the people of Moses are some who are guided by Haqq and do Adl (justice)
    • Sabbath violation and punishment (Q7:163-166)
    • The generational descendants, inheritors of the Book, and the violation of the Covenant; and they have studied what is therein; the home of the Hereafter is better for those who keep their duty; will they not use their intelligence (Q7:169)
    • but those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer, certainly We shall not let the reward of the reformers to be lost
    • the raising of the mountain above them (ratifying the Covenant with Bani Israel): hold firmly  what We have given you, and remember what is therein, that you may be able to keep your duty (to Allah) (Q7:171)
  • Testimony of all the Descendants of the Children of Adam over their Nafs
    • that Allah is their Lord
      • lest they say on the Day of Qiyamah
        • that we were unaware of it
        • or that our forefathers associated with Allah and we are their descendants, so will you destroy us for the deeds of those who practiced batil?
    • thus do We explain in detail the ayaat, so that they would return
  • the example of the person who was given knowledge of Our Signs, but he threw them away, so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, so he became of those who made legal mistakes (Q7:175)
    • if We willed, We could have elevated him thereby; but he adhered to the earth, and followed his desires
    • his example is that of a dog: if you chase him, he pants, if you leave him, he pants
    • such is the example of those who belie Our signs
    • so relate their stories, so that they reflect Q7:176)
    • evil is the example of the people who belie Our Signs and put their nafs in darkness (Q7:177)
    • he whom Allah guides is guided; and he whom He sends astray, it is those who are the losers (Q7:178)
  • and We have certainly produced for Hell many of jinns and humans
    • they have hearts that do not have any legal understanding
    • they have eyes but no vision
    • they have ears but do not listen
    • they are like livestock, or more astray
    • they are the heedless (Q7:179)
  • for Allah are the best names, so call upon Him through them
    • and leave those who practice deviation with His names
    • soon they will be requited for what they used to do (Q7:180)
    • and among them We created a community which guides by Haqq (truth) and thereby establishes Adl (justice) (Q7:181)
    • those who belie Our signs, soon shall We seize them in ways they won't even know (Q7:182)
    • and I will give them time, indeed My Plan is Firm (Q7:183)
    • do they not reflect that in their companion is no madness, but that he is a plain Warner (Q7:184)
    • do they not look into the realms of the skies and earth, and everything that Allah has created, that perhaps their appointed time has come near
    • then in what Hadith (narration) after this will they believe? (Q7:185)
    • whoever Allah sends astray, their is no one to guide after Him, and He leaves them in their transgressions, wandering blindly (Q7:186)
    • they ask you about the appointed Hour (as-Sa'ata), when will it be
      • say the knowledge thereof is with my Lord alone
      • none will reveal its time except Him
      • it lays heavily upon the skies and earth
      • it will not arrive except all of a sudden
      • they ask you as if you are familiar with it
      • say, its knowledge is only with Allah
      • but most of the people do not know (Q7:187)
      • say I hold for myself no benefit or harm except as Allah wills
      • if I had knowledge of unseen, I would have accumulated for myself much Khair
      • and no evil would have touched me
      • I am but a Warner, and a bringer of glad tidings for a people who believe (Q7:188)
      • it is He who created you from a single nafs,
        • then from her, her mate,
        • then when he covered her, and she carried a light burden,
        • when the burden became heavy, they both prayed to Allah, their Lord, that if He gave them a reformed offspring, they will be grateful (Q7:189)
        • when He gave them a reformed offspring, they both ascribed partners to Allah concerning that which He had given them
        • Exalted is Allah above what they associate (Q7:190)
        • do they associate with Him those who create nothing, and are themselves created? (Q7:191)
        • and they are unable to help them, nor even help their own nafs (Q7:192)
        • and if you invite them to guidance, they will not follow you
        • it is the same whether you invite them or you remain silent, (Q7:193)
        • indeed those you call upon other than Allah are slaves like you
          • call upon them and let them respond if you are truthful (Q7:194)
          • do they have feet by which they walk?
          • or hands with which they strike /grip?
          • or eyes they envision with?
          • or ears they listen with?
          • say, call upon those partners, plot against me, and give me no respite
        • indeed my protector is Allah, who has sent down the Book, and He is the Ally of the reformers (Q7:196)
          • those whom you call upon other than Him are unable to help you, and are unable to help their own nafs (Q7:197)
          • and if you invite them to guidance, they do not listen, and you see them looking at you, but do not envision (Q7:198)
          • take what is given freely / pardon, enjoin what is good, and turn away from those ignorant of the Law (Q7:199)
        • and if an evil suggestion comes to you from Shaitan (Satan), seek the protection of Allah, He is Hearing, Knowing (Q7:200)
          • those who keep their duty (taqwa), when an impulse by Shaitan (Satan) touches them, they remember, and envision (Q7:201)
          • and their brothers, they increase them in error, and they do not stop short (Q7:202)
        • and when you do not bring them a sign, they say why have you not contrived it
            • say I only follow that which is revealed to me from my Lord
            • insights from your Lord
            • a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe (Q7:203)

Surah al-A'raf concludes on this note:

So, when the Qur’ân is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imâm (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Sûrat Al-Fâtihah), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. (Tafsir At-Tabari).

And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words in the mornings, and in the afternoons and be not of those who are neglectful.[1]

[1](V.205): See the footnote of (13:28).

Surely, those who are with your Lord (angels) are never too proud to perform acts of worship to Him, but they glorify His Praise and prostrate themselves before Him.

[Al-Quran, Surah al-Baqarah, ayaat 8-16, https://quran.com/2/1-20]

The Quran, Surah al-Baqarah, in its opening statements, introduces three kinds of people: (i) the pious believers,  (ii) the rejectors, and (iii) the hypocrites. The Quran, Q2:14, terms the associates of these hypocrites as shayateen. They are the ones who cause corruption in the Earth, and they do not even realise it.

The shaytan (plural: shayateen) has been mentioned 88 times in The Quran, and its root (ش ط ن) has not been employed for any other word, that is to say there is no range of meaning. The word is generally used as is,  translated as devil (plural: devils).

The Quran introduces Iblis (Q2:34) as the Shaytan (Q2:36) who deceived Adam and his spouse into disobeying Allah, and consequently made them slip out of what they were in, during their temporary stay in the Garden (Q2:35).

The Quran introduces those who recited magic and those who taught magic as Shayateen. This particularly references to the magic being practised in Babylon while it was a part of the Kingdom of Solomon. In spite of the fact that they were warned that it was a trial for them, they learnt magic to separate man from his wife, although their magic could not harm anyone except by Allah's permission. They learned what harmed them, and did not benefit them, even though they knew that whoever buys it (magic) will have no share in the Hereafter.  Miserable indeed is the price they sold their nafs for, if only they knew (Q2:102).

The Quran guides to eat from everything good and permissible, and cautions from following the footsteps of Shaytan, who is humans' open enemy (Q2:168, Q2:172). The Shaytan commands evil and indecency, and to say about Allah that which we do not know. The Quran lists the only four items forbidden to eat (Q2:173).

The Quran invites the believers to enter into Islam completely, with submissive hearts, and not follow Shaytan, the open enemy (Q2:208). This ayaat is in the context of the types of pilgrims described in the immediately preceding ayaat. There are those who only desire the immediate (Q2:200), those who desire both the immediate and the hereafter, seeking refuge from the fire (Q2:201); the one who desires corruption of progeny and crops, due to his power (Q2:204-206); and the the one who completely sells his nafs seeking the pleasure of Allah (Q2:207). It presents hope to those who slip even after clear proofs, informing them that Allah is Powerful and Wise.

The Quran informs that it is Shaytan who threatens with poverty and urges indecency, whereas Allah promises forgiveness and bounties, as Allah is Encompassing, Knowledgable (Q2:268). This information is part of the three rukuhs (Q2:261-274) that enjoin spending, and immediately follows the ayat which exhorts spending from the good you've earned and that which the Earth has produced for you, and not to spend from the bad which you yourselves would not take unless your eyes were closed, as it is Allah who is Free of need, Praiseworthy (Q2:267).

The Quran informs us that those who consume Riba (usury or interest) cannot stand except as one driven to insanity by Shaytan by his touch. That is because they say that Trade is like Riba, while Allah has permitted Trade (buying selling), and Allah has forbidden Riba. So, whoever receives advice from his Lord and desists (from any future riba), may keep his previous gains and his case is with Allah. As for the ones who returns to consuming usury, they are the companions of the Fire (Q2:275). Allah destroys usury and nourishes charities. Allah does not like every rejecting, willingly sinning person (Q2:276). Those who believe, and do acts of reform, and establish prayer, and give zakah, they will receive their reward from their Lord, and neither will they grieve (the past), nor be afraid (of future consequences) (Q2:277). O Believers, make Allah your shield (from the Fire), and give up what remains of Riba, if you really believe (Q2:278). And if you don't, then you are served notice of war from Allah and His Messenger. However, if you repent, then your principal is yours. Neither do you wrong, nor you  be wronged (Q2:279). If someone is in difficulty, postpone the payment till a time of ease, and if you waive it as an act of charity, it is better for you, if only you knew (Q2:280). Shield yourself from the Day you will be returned to Allah, and every nafs will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged (Q2:281).

The Quran informs us that when Mary was born, her mother sought the Lord's Protection for her, and her offspring, from Shaytan, the Outcast (Q3:36). It is believed that Mary's son (Allah's Messenger, Messiah Jesus (Isa)) will return to fight the final battle with Dajjal (false messiah) mentioned in Q2:279.

The Quran informs us that those who turned back on the Day the two armies met (the Battle of Uhud), it was Shaytan who made them slip because of what they had earned. Yet, Allah has pardoned them, as Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing (Q3:155).

...

The Quran informs us that the warning (of a great army inspiring fear) was from Shaytan to make you fear. So, do not fear them, but fear Me (Allah) if you are Believers (Q3:175).

The Quran informs us that those who spend to be seen by people, and do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, shaytan is their close friend, a very evil close friend (Q4:38). This ayat immediately follows the ayaat about men being qawam (maintainers) of women (Q4:34), how to manage disobedience (Q4:34) and split (Q4:35), excellence with parents and the list of all who are entitled to be good with, without boasting or arrogance (Q4:36), those who are stingy and encourage others to stinginess and withhold Allah's bounties for such disbelievers, Allah has prepared a painful torment (Q4:37). The ayaat following Q4:38 ask what harm would they have come if they believed Allah and the Last Day and spent from what Allah has given them? And Allah has perfect knowledge of them (Q4:39). Indeed Allah does not wrong anyone even by a particle's weight, if anyone does good, Allah multiplies it many times over, and gives a great reward from His Presence (Q4:40).

The Quran asks haven't you seen those who claim to believe in what was revealed to you and those before you, seeking judgement from Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it? And shaytan desires to lead them astray, far astray(Q4:60). While believers have been commanded to obey Allah, His Messenger and those in power, yet all disputes must be referred back to Allah and His Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more seemly in the end (Q4:59). When it is said to come to Allah's Revelation and His Messenger, you see the hypocrites turn away with aversion (Q4:61). Yet, when they are struck by misfortune because of what they sent forth, they come to you, swearing by Allah, claiming they only meant to do goodwill and reconciliation (Q4:62). Only Allah knows what's in their hearts, so turn away from them, and caution them, and speak to them, such that would touch their very souls, a clear speech (Q4:63).

The Quran states that believers fight in the way of Allah, while the disbelievers / rejectors fight in the cause of Taghut. So, fight against the friends of Shaytan, as the plot of Shaytan has always been weak (Q4:76). The next ayat draws attention towards the people who were formerly asked to withhold their hands (from fighting), and to establish prayer and give zakah, however when fighting was enjoined upon them, they feared people as they should fear Allah, or even more, ... (Q4:77). The command to fight follows the oft-quoted ayat: 'And what is it with you? You do not fight in the cause of Allah and for oppressed men, women, and children who cry out, “Our Lord! Deliver us from this land of oppressors! Appoint for us a saviour; appoint for us a helper—all by Your grace.” ' (Q4:75).

The Quran continues to inform that when these people hear some news of security or fear, they publicise it; if they had referred it instead to the Messenger or those in command, those with the ability to check and draw correct conclusions could have verified it; and if the favour of Allah had not been upon you, you would have followed Shaytan, except for a few (Q4:83). The next ayat instructs to fight in the cause of Allah, as you are responsible for none but your own nafs, and to also encourage the believers, so that Allah curbs the might of the disbelievers, and Allah is greater in might and punishment (Q4:84).

The Quran informs us that those who worship females, worship none else but Shaytan, the rebel. (Q4:117), who has been cursed by Allah, and he has vowed to take hold of a specific number of Your Servants (Q4:118). He promises to mislead them, arouse desires, and command them to slit the ears of cattle, and to make (chemically degrading) changes in the creation of Allah. And whoever takes Shaytan as a guardian instead of Allah has suffered a huge, clear loss (Q4:119). He promises them and arouses desire in them, and his promises are only to deceive (Q4:120). It is they who will have Hell for their home, and will find no escape from it (Q4:121).

The world is full of many polytheistic religious traditions, from ancient times to this day, who worship one to several goddesses, and indulge in all sorts of rituals. Magic and medicine have been intertwined since ancient times.

The Quran informs the believers that intoxicants, games of chance / easy money, idols and altars, divination by arrows, as these are a defilement of Shaytan's work, so it commands them to refrain from  them, so you may be successful (Q5:90). The next ayat further informs that Shaytan's plan is to stir up enmity between you through intoxicants and games of chance / easy money, and to prevent you from the remembrance of Allah and prayers (Salah). So, will you not then abstain? (Q5:91). The next ayat commands obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and beware (of the Shaytan), but if you turn back, know that Our Messenger's job is only to proclaim in the clearest manner (Q5:92). The following ayat states that there is no blame on the believers for what they have consumed before the prohibition, as long as they keep their duty to Allah, believe and do acts of reform, again keep their duty to Allah and believe, again keep their duty to Allah and do good / excel. Allah loves the doers of good / the excellent (Q5:93).

The Quran questions why people did not humble themselves when violence reached them from Us. Rather, their hearts hardened, and Shaytan made their deeds alluring to them (Q6:43). The previous ayat states that earlier also Messengers were sent, and their people were seized with hardship and suffering so that they would humble themselves (Q6:42). The following ayat informs us that therefore, when they forgot what they had been reminded with, the doors of everything was opened up for them, until when they rejoiced in what they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were left in despair (Q6:44). Thus, the last remnants of those who did wrong were utterly uprooted (eliminated), and all praise belongs to Allah, the Sustainer of the worlds (Q6:45).

The Quran instructs that when you see people indulging in vain discourse about Our ayaat, avoid them until they turn to some other vain discourse; and if Shaytan makes you forget, do not sit with the wrongdoers after the reminder (Q6:68). Upon those who keep their duty to Allah, they are not held accountable for them, except only to remind them so that they might also observe taqwa (Q6:69). The next ayat instructs to leave those who take their Deen (religion) as mere play and amusement, and the worldly life has deluded them, but remind with it (The Quran) lest a nafs is given up to destruction due to to what it has earned, where it will find no protector or intercessor, even if it offered every ransom, I will not be accepted. Such are those who deliver themselves up to destruction, due to what they earn, for them is a scalding drink and painful punishment for their rejection (Q6:70). The next ayat directs to ask that should I call upon other than Allah those who can neither benefit us nor harm us, and turn back in disbelief after Allah has guided us; like those whom the Shaytan has enticed to confusion upon the Earth, while their companions call them to guidance, saying 'come to us'? Say, the only guidance is Allah's guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the Worlds (Q6:71), and to establish prayer and keep our duty to Him, and to Him you will all be gathered together (Q6:72).

The Quran informs us that We have made for every Prophet enemies Shayateen from Humans and Jinns, who inspire each other with elegant speech which is deceptive; and if your Lord wanted, they wouldn't have done it, so leave them with the falsehood they invent (Q6:112).

The Quran commands us to not eat that on which Allah's name has not been pronounced, as that amounts to stubborn disobedience, and surely the Shayateen inspire their allies to argue with you, and if you were to obey them, you too would be polytheists(Q6:121). This command follows the ayaat about eating that upon which Allah's name has been pronounced (Q6:118-119), and immediately proceeded by the command to leave all sins, open and secret, and that the criminals will be compensated for their deeds (Q6:120).

The Quran states that some cattle are fit for labour, others too small; so eat from what Allah has provided for you, and do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan, for indeed he is to you an open enemy (Q6:142). The ayaat preceding this refute many ignorant statements and practices of the polytheists (Q6:136-141). The two ayaat following this clearly spell out the eight pairs of cattle, that Allah has especially created for humans, and refutes all lies that people have made up against the provisions Allah has provided for humans (Q143-144). The next clearly spells out the only four things forbidden to an eater who eats: carrion, running blood, meat of swine/pigs, and that upon which someone other than Allah's name has been taken (Q6:145). It goes on to state that there were some more eating prohibitions for the Jews, yet clarifies that it was because of their transgressions (Q6:146).

The Quran relates the story of Adam's fall: the whispering of the Shaytan to both Adam and his wife, to make apparent for them what was concealed from them, lying to them that Allah had only forbidden the tree except that it would make them angels or make them immortals (Q7:20). The next ayat states he sweared that he was their well-wishing advisor (Q7:21). The Quran states that through deception, he brought about their fall, exposing what was concealed, leading them to cover themselves with the leaves of the Garden, and Allah then questioning them that hadn't He forbidden it to them, and warned them that Shaytan is their sworn enemy (Q7:22). The Quran quotes their prayer for forgiveness (Q7:123), their expulsion to Earth as enemies to each other (Q7:124), sentenced to living, dying and being resurrected there (Q7:125). The next ayat draws attention to the clothing bestowed upon the children of Adam, to cover and to adorn, and reminds that the clothing of taqwa (that which they lost through disobedience) was better (Q7:26). The Quran warns the children of Adam to not let Shaytan put you in trial as he got your parents expelled from the Garden, stripping them off their clothing, and exposing that which was concealed; indeed he and his tribe sees you from where you cannot see them; indeed We have made the  Shayateen friends of those who do not believe (Q7:27). The next ayat calls out their falsehood: their  statements regarding the immorality which they commit (Q7:28), and the following ayat commands equitable justice, facing Allah alone in every Masjid, and directs to call upon Him with sincerity in Deen (Law of Recompense), just as you were originated, so you will be resurrected (Q7:29). The Quran informs us that some He has guided, while others are destined to stray, they have taken the Shayateen as their friends instead of Allah, they think they are rightly guided (Q7:30).

Economic prosperity, power, Iblis' enmity and deception, free will, loss suffered, trial on this Earth, the provision, the guidance and the warnings, the importance of sincerity in Deen, and the promised resurrection and recompense, are spelled out in detail, in the opening statements of this surah, leading unto scenes from the Day of Deen (Recompense) (Q7:1-53).

The Quran recites to us the news of the person to whom We had given Our Signs, but he detached himself from them, so Shaytan pursued him, so he became of those who lead astray (Q7:175). The next ayat states that if We willed, we could have elevated him thereby; but he clung to the Earth and followed his own desires; his example is that of a dog: if you attack it, it pants with its tongue protruding, and if you leave it, it still pants with its tongue protruding; that is the example of the people who reject Our Signs; so narrate their stories, perhaps they may ponder (Q7:176).

The Quran states that when Shaytan tempts you with an evil suggestion, seek refuge with Allah, He is Listening, Knowing (Q7:200). The Quran states that those who observe Taqwa, when an impulse touches them from Shaytan, they remember Allah, and they then see clearly (Q7:201).

The Quran reminds you of when he covered you in drowsiness to give you tranquility, and sent water from the sky to purify you with it, and to remove from you the impurity of Shaytan, to strengthen your hearts, and thereby firmly plant your feet (Q8:11).

The Quran reminds of when Shaytan made their deeds pleasing to them, saying to them that no humans will overcome you today, I am surely by your side; but when the two forces faced each other, he  turned back on his heels, and said, 'Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed, I fear Allāh. And Allāh is severe in penalty.' (Q8:48).

The Quran quotes the father advising his son to not to relate his vision to his brothers, lest they plan a plot against you, indeed Shaytan is a clear enemy of humans (Q12:5)

The Quran informs that he said to the one he thought was about to be saved, of them both, to remember him to his Lord, then Shaytan made him forget to remember him to his Lord, so he remained in the jail for a few years (Q12:42).

The Quran informs that he raised his parents upon the throne, and they all fell in prostration to him; and he said: 'O my father! This is the interpretation of my dream of old. My Lord hath made it true, and He hath shown me kindness, since He took me out of the prison and hath brought you from the desert after Shaytan had made strife between me and my brethren. Lo! my Lord is tender unto whom He will. He is the Knower, the Wise.' (Q12:100).

The Quran informs that Shaytan will say after the matter has been decided: 'Allah promised you a truthful promise while I gave you a promise and did not fulfill it. I had no authority over you, except that I invited you and you accepted my call. So, do not blame me, but blame yourselves. Neither I can come to your help, nor can you come to my help. I disown your associating me with Allah in the past. Surely, there is a painful punishment for the unjust.' (Q14:22).

The Quran informs us that she (the sky) is being protected from every Shaytan outcast (Q15:17).

The Quran swears by Allah that certainly We sent Messengers to communities before you, so Shaytan made their deeds beautiful to them, and he is their patron this day, and for them is a painful punishment (Q16:63).

The Quran commands that so, when you recite The Quran, seek protection of Allah from Shaytan the outcast (Q16:98).

The Quran states that spendthrifts (wasteful squanderers of wealth) are the brothers of Shaytan, and indeed Shaytan is towards his Lord ungrateful (Q17:27).

The Quran quotes Allah: 'And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Shaytan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Shaytan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.' (Q17:53).

The Quran informs that he has been given permission to: 'Entice with your voice those of them whom you can, and rally against them your horsemen and your footmen, and share with them in their wealth and their children, and make promises to them' - and Shaytan promises them nothing but delusion - (Q17:64).

The Quran quotes the servant: 'You see, when we stayed at the rock, I forgot the fish. It was none but Shaytan who made me forget it to tell you about it - and it made its way into the sea in an amazing manner.' (Q18:63).

The Quran quotes him saying to his father: 'O my father, do not worship Shaytan. Indeed Shaytan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.' (Q19:44). 'O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Shaytan a companion.' (Q19:45).

The Quran takes oath: 'o by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the Shayateen; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees. (Q19:68).

The Quran questions: 'do you not see that we send the Shayateen upon the disbelievers (rejectors), constantly inciting them?' (Q19:83).

The Quran informs us of the whisper of the Shaytan: 'O Adam! Shall I show you the Tree of Immortality and a kingdom that does not fade away?' (Q20:120).

The Quran informs us that of the Shayateen were those dived for him, and did work other than that; and that We were guarding them (Q21:82).

The Quran informs us that of humans there are still people who argue about Allah, without knowledge, and follow every obstinately rebellious Shaytan (Q22:3). The next ayat states that: It has been decreed for him [i.e., every devil] that whoever turns to him - he will misguide him and will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze (Q22:4).

The Quran informs us that whenever a Messenger or a Prophet has been sent, in his wishes Shaytan insinuated something; Allah eliminates what Shaytan insinuates, and Allah perfects His Ayaat; and Allah is Knowing, Wise (Q22:52). So that what Shaytan insinuates becomes a trial for those whose heart is diseased, or have hardened hearts, and indeed the wrongdoers are in great dissension (Q22:53).

The Quran states: and say: 'My Lord! I seek refuge in You from the temptations of the Shayateen.' (Q23:97).  'And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, that they ˹even˺ come near me.' (Q23:98).

The Quran instructs the people who have believed to not to follow the footsteps of the Shaytan, for whoever follows the footsteps of the  Shaytan, he commands indecency and evil, and if it hadn't been Allah's favour upon you, no one (nafs) would have grown, ever, but Allah grows whoever He wills; and Allah is Hearer and Knower (Q24:21).

The Quran quotes the laments of the wrongdoer on Judgement Day: 'It was he who truly made me stray from the Reminder after it had reached me.” And Shaytan has always betrayed humanity.' (Q25:29).

The Quran states that it is not the Shayateen who have brought down this (Quran) (Q26:210).

The Quran asks shall we inform you on whom the Shayateen descend (Q26:221). The next ayat informs that they descend on every sinful liar (Q26:222).

The Quran quotes the bird stating that: 'I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allāh, and Shaytan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way, so they are not guided,' (Q27:24).

The Quran informs us that he entered the city at the time when people are not aware, so he found two men fighting, one from his group and one of the enemy; so the man from his group called for his help against their enemy, so Moses punched him and he died. He said: 'this is from the work of Shaytan, indeed he is an enemy clearly leading astray' (Q28:15).

The Quran informs that: And A'ad and Thamud! is manifest unto you from their dwellings. Shaytan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers. (Q29:38).

The Quran states that when they are told to follow that which Allah has sent, they say that rather we follow what we found our fathers following; even though Shaytan is calling them to a blazing punishment (Q31:21).

The Quran warns that Shaytan is your enemy, so take him as your enemy; indeed he only invites his group to become companions of the blaze (Q35:6).

The Quran quotes what Allah will say on Judgement Day: 'Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Shaytan - [for] indeed, he is to you a clear enemy -' (Q36:60). 'And that you worship [only] Me? This is a straight path.' (Q36:61).

The Quran informs us that it is for protection against every outcast Shaytan (Q37:7). The previous ayat mentions that the sky of the dunya has been decorated with kawakib (rocky bodies) (Q37:6). The following ayat states that this protection is in place to prevent them from listening to the Exalted Assembly, and they are pelted from every side (Q37:8); fiercely driven away, and for them is a perpetual torment (Q37:9).

The Quran states 'bearing fruit like Shayateen’s heads.' (Q37:65) about the Tree of Zaqqum in Hell that the criminals will be tried with, and they will eat from it.

The Quran informs that: and the Shayateen every builder and diver (Q38:37) were working for Solomon.

The Quran reminds of when Our servant Job cried out to his Lord: 'Indeed, Shaytan has touched me with hardship and torment.' (Q38:41).

The Quran states that and if there comes to you from Shaytan a suggestion, seek refuge with Allah; indeed He is Who is All-Hearing, All-Knowing (Q41:36).

The Quran states that whoever is blinded from remembrance of Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), We appoint for him a Shaytan, and he is to him a close companion (Q43:36).

The Quran warns that don't let Shaytan avert you from it, indeed he is for you a clear enemy (Q43:62). The previous ayat is informing that Jesus is the knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow me, this is the straight way (Q43:61).

The Quran states that indeed those relapse into doubt, turning on their heels, after guidance has been made clear to them, it is Shaytan who has seduced them, and given them the rein (Q47:25).

The Quran informs us that secret talks are only inspired by Shaytan to grieve the believers, yet he cannot harm them whatsoever except by Allah’s Will. So in Allah let the believers put their trust. (Q58:10). The previous two ayaat inform us about those who were forbidden from secret conversation and how they keep returning to what they were forbidden from, conspiring in sin, aggression, and disobedience to the Messenger, ... (Q58:8). The believers are advised that when you converse privately, let it not be for sin, aggression, or disobedience to the Messenger, but let it be for goodness and righteousness. And fear Allah, to Whom you will ˹all˺ be gathered (Q58:9).

The Quran informs us that Shaytan has taken hold of them, and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the group of Shaytan. Verily, it is the group of Shaytan who are going to be the losers (Q58:19).

The Quran informs us that their example is like that of Shaytan when he tells the human to do kufr (reject); then   when he rejects, he says I disown you, I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds (Q59:16).

The Quran informs us that the sky of this dunya has been decorated with lamps, and they have been made to drive away the Shayateen, and we have prepared for them a torment of the blaze (Q67:5).

The Quran states that this is not the speech of the outcast Shaytan (Q81:25).
