فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُم مَّنَـٰسِكَكُمْ فَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَذِكْرِكُمْ ءَابَآءَكُمْ أَوْ أَشَدَّ ذِكْرًۭا ۗ فَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمَا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَـٰقٍۢ ٢٠٠
When you have fulfilled your sacred rites, praise Allah as you used to praise your forefathers ˹before Islam˺, or even more passionately. There are some who say, “Our Lord! Grant us ˹Your bounties˺ in this world,” but they will have no share in the Hereafter.

Once you have fulfilled your modes of worship in Hajj, recite the name of Allah, as you would speak of your forefathers or even with greater fervor. Now among the people there is one who says: “Our Lord, give to us in this world...” and he has no share in the Hereafter.

Yet there are others who say, “Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ نَصِيبٌۭ مِّمَّا كَسَبُوا۟ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ ٢٠٢
It is they who will receive a ˹heavenly˺ reward for the good they have done. And Allah is swift in reckoning.[1]

[1] Swift in reckoning (sarî’ul-ḥisâb) means “He is quick in recording the deeds and judging them.”
For them there is a share of what they have earned; and Allah is swift at reckoning.

Presently, we are living in adDunya. Believers believe in a reckoning and a consequent life in the alAkhirah.
So, what is adDunya (ٱلدُّنْيَا), and what is alAkhirah ( ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ)?
ٱلدُّنْيَا
The triliteral root dāl nūn wāw (د ن و) occurs 133 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:
- twice as the form I verb danā (دَنَا)
- 12 times as the nominal adnā (أَدْنَىٰ)
- 115 times as the nominal dun'yā (دُّنْيَا)
- once as the active participle dān (دَان)
- three times as the active participle dāniyat (دَانِيَة)
So, the words formed with this root imply draw near, approach, less, near, more suitable, appropriate, hanging near and low, and a hundred and fifteen times as dunya, which has been translated in this search result as 'world' but The Quran uses the word 'alAalameen' (الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۙ) which is also translated as 'the world'.
This ayat presents a contrast between far and near:
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ٨
then he approached ˹the Prophet˺, coming so close

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ ٩
that he was only two arms-lengths away or even less.[1]

[Al-Quran, Surah anNajm, ayaat 8-9]
The preceding ayaat of Surah anNajm were describing Gabriel (Jibril) appearing to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his true form on the high horizon, filling it up with his presence. Thereafter, he drew near (دَنَا) and then he lowered himself into the dunya (فَتَدَلَّىٰ), like a bucket entering a well? Like when Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) was inside the well, and a bucket was lowered into it (Q12:19)? The scriptures informs us the sky is water, and there is a barrier that holds up that water. This is something Allah, the Fatir (Separator) of the skies and earth did during creation. The Quran Surah alFussilat informs that after the Earth and Sky were ordered to come together, then Allah layered the Sky (which was dukhan (smoke (water vapours?)) into seven skies, and decreed to each sky its matters (amr). Moreover, it also mentions that the sky of the adDunya is ... . So, what was shown to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the high horizon was beyond the first sky (first well of water) within or below which is Earth? So, we have several terms to unravel, concepts to understand:
Earth (الۡاَرۡضِ) , Sky (السَّمَآءِ) , Skies (السَّمٰوٰتِ) , adDunya (ٱلدُّنْيَا) , alAkhirah (ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ) , horizon (بِالۡاُفُقِ) , world (الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۙ) , ...
Generally, when we see something from far, it appears small, and as it approaches it grows bigger till it is near and in its real size. However, when Gabriel (Jibril) displayed his true form on the high horizon, he filled up the view, yet when he draws near, he appears much smaller?
This ayat presents a contrast between less and more:
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ مَا يَكُونُ مِن نَّجْوَىٰ ثَلَـٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمْ وَلَا خَمْسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمْ وَلَآ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ذَٰلِكَ وَلَآ أَكْثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ ۖ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ ٧
Do you not see that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? If three converse privately, He is their fourth. If five, He is their sixth. Whether fewer or more, He is with them[1] wherever they may be. Then, on the Day of Judgment, He will inform them of what they have done. Surely Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.

The Quran informs us that alAkhirah is greater than the first:
مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ ٣
Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you].

وَلَلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ٤
And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life].
— Saheeh International
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰٓ ٥
And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.

Similarly, the punishment of alAkhirah is greater than that of adDunya:
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فَسَقُوا۟ فَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ ۖ كُلَّمَآ أَرَادُوٓا۟ أَن يَخْرُجُوا۟ مِنْهَآ أُعِيدُوا۟ فِيهَا وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ ذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٠
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."

وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ٢١
And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return [i.e., repent].

وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَ عَنْهَآ ۚ إِنَّا مِنَ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ مُنتَقِمُونَ ٢٢
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.
