Garments of Skin

O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.

— M. Pickthall

O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts) and as an adornment; and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth[1]).

— Al-Hilali & Khan

[1](V.26) It is said that the pagan Arabs in the Pre-Islâmic Period of Ignorance used to do Tawâf (going round) of the Ka‘bah in a naked state. So when Islâm became victorious and Makkah was conquered, the pagans and the polytheists were forbidden to enter Makkah, and none was allowed to do Tawâf of the Ka‘bah in a naked state.

O Children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you as he caused your (first) parents to go forth from the Garden and tore off from them their robe (of innocence) that he might manifest their shame to them. Lo! he seeth you, he and his tribe, from whence ye see him not. Lo! We have made the devils protecting friends for those who believe not.

— M. Pickthall

O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitân (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwâ’ (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabîluhu (his soldiers from the jinn or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayâtin (devils) Auliyâ’ (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not.

— Al-Hilali & Khan

[Al-Quran 7:26-27

The Quran, Surah al-A'raf recounts the arrogance and deception of Satan with which he persuaded Adam and his wife to fall into sin. Then it informs us that clothing was bestowed upon the children of Adam, and the purpose of it. Then it warns the children of Adam to not to let Satan deceive us as he deceived our parents, 'ripping off' their clothing...

Surah Ta Ha (Q20:118) informs us that Adam and his spouse were not naked originally. There was plenty in the Garden for them to never go naked or hungry. The Bible informs us that when their eyes opened (Genesis 3 7), they realised that they were naked. The Bible (Genesis 3 21) informs us that after their fall, Adam and his wife were provided with skin to cover their body.

Surah al-Baqarah (Q2:36) informs us that Satan made Adam and his wife 'slip out' of what they were in. In an earlier post, I've explored the example of snails and slugs to understand what 'slipping out' means. Snails have a shell that they live in, attached to their bodies through muscles. Slugs are devolved snails, without shells, and covered with skin.

Surah al-A'raf (Q7:23) informs us that they cried to their Rabb (Lord-Sustainer) that they had put their nafs in darkness, and prayed to be covered and for mercy

So, what happened? Did they lose consciousness when they ate the forbidden fruit? During their unconsciousness, Satan ripped off their clothing? Was this clothing removable to begin with, like we have now, or was it growing upon the body, like a shell? When they regained consciousness, their natural clothing (لِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ) had been ripped off and they were in a terrible state, their hidden parts exposed? They started dressing their wounds, with the leaves of the tree? Then Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ covered them with skin, in response to their prayer for cover and mercy? They are granted skins to cover them? The skin that encloses our body is a sign of our devolution as a specie? From a highly advanced specie, we have devolved into very weak and vulnerable creatures? From 'اَحۡسَنِ تَقۡوِيۡمٍ‏' , we have become 'اَسۡفَلَ سَافِلِيۡنَۙ‏' (Q95:4-5)?

The Quran uses the word julood (جُلُودُ) to describe the skin on the body. The triliteral root jīm lām dāl (ج ل د) occurs 13 times in the Quran. ...  Of these, nine times as the noun julūd (جُلُود)

Regarding the Hereafter, the people who disbelieve / reject, it is stated:

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.

— Saheeh International

Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment. Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise.

— M. Pickthall

[Al-Quran 4:56]

Regarding the skins of cattle, we read:

And Allāh has made for you from your homes a place of rest and made for you from the hides of the animals tents which you find light on your day of travel and your day of encampment; and from their wool, fur and hair is furnishing and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.

— Saheeh International

And Allah hath given you in your houses an abode, and hath given you (also), of the hides of cattle, houses which ye find light (to carry) on the day of migration and on the day of pitching camp; and of their wool and their fur and their hair, caparison and comfort for a while.

— M. Pickthall

[Al-Quran 16:80]

Regarding the disbelievers, again it is stated in Surah al-Hajj:

۞ هَـٰذَانِ خَصْمَانِ ٱخْتَصَمُوا۟ فِى رَبِّهِمْ ۖ فَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَابٌۭ مِّن نَّارٍۢ يُصَبُّ مِن فَوْقِ رُءُوسِهِمُ ٱلْحَمِيمُ ١٩

These[1] are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have cut out for them garments of fire. Poured upon their heads will be scalding water

[1]i.e., the believers and the disbelievers.

By which is melted that within their bellies and [their] skins.

And for [striking] them are maces of iron.

Every time they want to get out of it [i.e., Hellfire] from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"

[Al-Quran 22:19-22, Translation:Saheeh International]

Regarding The Quran, in Surah az-Zumar, it is stated:

˹It is˺ Allah ˹Who˺ has sent down the best message—a Book of perfect consistency and repeated lessons—which causes the skin ˹and hearts˺ of those who fear their Lord to tremble, then their skin and hearts soften at the mention of ˹the mercy of˺ Allah. That is the guidance of Allah, through which He guides whoever He wills. But whoever Allah leaves to stray will be left with no guide.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Allâh has sent down the Best Statement, a Book (this Qur’ân), its parts resembling each other (in goodness and truth) (and) oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allâh. That is the guidance of Allâh. He Guides therewith whom He wills; and whomever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide.

— Al-Hilali & Khan

Are those who will only have their ˹bare˺ faces to shield themselves from the awful torment on Judgment Day ˹better than those in Paradise˺? It will ˹then˺ be said to the wrongdoers: “Reap what you sowed!”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection (as he who enters peacefully in Paradise)? And it will be said to the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers): "Taste what you used to earn!"

— Al-Hilali & Khan

[Al-Quran 39:23-24]

Regarding the Day of Judgement, it is foretold:

وَيَوْمَ يُحْشَرُ أَعْدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمْ يُوزَعُونَ ١٩

˹Consider˺ the Day ˹when˺ the enemies of Allah will be gathered for the Fire, all driven in ranks.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

And (remember) the Day that the enemies of Allâh will be gathered to the Fire, then they will be driven [(to the Fire), former ones being withheld till their later ones will join them].

— Al-Hilali & Khan

When they reach it, their ears, eyes, and skin will testify against what they used to do.[1]

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

[1] It is reported in Ibn Kathîr’s commentary that, on the Day of Judgment, the wicked will deny the evil deeds in their records—as a desperate attempt to escape the horrible punishment in Hell. They will be asked if they accept Allah, the angels, or even their own families and neighbours as witnesses, but they will refuse. So Allah will make their organs testify against them.

Till, when they reach it (Hell-fire), their hearing (ears) and their eyes, and their skins will testify against them as to what they used to do.

— Al-Hilali & Khan

They will ask their skin ˹furiously˺, “Why have you testified against us?” It will say, “We have been made to speak by Allah, Who causes all things to speak. He ˹is the One Who˺ created you the first time, and to Him you were bound to return.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

And they will say to their skins, "Why do you testify against us?" They will say: "Allâh has caused us to speak as He causes all things to speak: and He created you the first time, and to Him you are made to return."

— Al-Hilali & Khan

You did not ˹bother to˺ hide yourselves from your ears, eyes, and skin to prevent them from testifying against you. Rather, you assumed that Allah did not know much of what you used to do.

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

And you have not been hiding yourselves (in the world), lest your ears, and your eyes, and your skins should testify against you; but you thought that Allâh knew not much of what you were doing.

— Al-Hilali & Khan

It was that ˹false˺ assumption you entertained about your Lord that has brought about your doom, so you have become losers.”

— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

And that thought of yours which you thought about your Lord, has brought you to destruction; and you have become (this Day) of those utterly lost!

— Al-Hilali & Khan

[Al-Quran 20:121]

...

The Quran informs us of what happened to Adam عليه السلام when he disobeyed his Lord  ﷻ 's command to stay away from a certain tree in the Garden:

  • they slipped out of what they were in
  • their original clothing was removed from them
  • their 'covered' parts became apparent to them

Observing the common garden snail and slugs, one can see that though they are similar, yet one creature has a shell, and the other doesn't. Both have clothing-less bodies, unlike other animals who are generally clothed in fur, feather, shell, or scales.

Looking up details about snails and slugs, one learns that:

Snail, copied from Wikipedia [as on December 13, 2022]:

snail is, in loose terms, a shelled gastropod. The name is most often applied to land snailsterrestrial pulmonate gastropodmolluscs. However, the common name snail is also used for most of the members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have a coiled shell that is large enough for the animal to retract completely into. When the word "snail" is used in this most general sense, it includes not just land snails but also numerous species of sea snails and freshwater snails. Gastropods that naturally lack a shell, or have only an internal shell, are mostly called slugs, and land snails that have only a very small shell (that they cannot retract into) are often called semi-slugs

Shell, copied from Wikipedia [as on December 13, 2022]

The gastropod shell is part of the body of a gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the aperture, which provides further protection. ...

Shell layers[edit]

The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the mantle. The calcareous central layer, tracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate precipitated into an organic matrix known as conchiolin. The outermost layer is the periostracum which is resistant to abrasion and provides most shell coloration. The body of the snail contacts the innermost smooth layer that may be composed of mother-of-pearl or shell nacre, a dense horizontally packed form of conchiolin, which is layered upon the periostracum as the snail grows.

In the Indian Ocean, three populations of iron-clad sea-snails have been discovered around three volcanic vents:

Scaly-foot gastropod, copied from Wikipedia [as on August 7, 2023]:

Chrysomallon squamiferumcommonly known as the scaly-foot gastropodscaly-foot snailsea pangolin, or volcano snail[3][4] is a species of deep-sea hydrothermal-vent snail, a marinegastropod mollusc in the family Peltospiridae.[2] This vent-endemic gastropod is known only from deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean, where it has been found at depths of about 2,400–2,900 m (1.5–1.8 mi). ...

The shell is of a unique construction, with three layers; the outer layer consists of iron sulphides, the middle layer is equivalent to the organic periostracum found in other gastropods, and the innermost layer is made of aragonite. The foot is also unusual, being armored at the sides with iron-mineralised sclerites.

...

Devolution of Snails: loss of shell

Scientists believe that the shell is the default state of these creatures. They believe that shell-less creatures, like slugs, lost their shell as part of their evolution, or rather devolution:

Evolutionary changes[edit]

Among proposed roles invoked for the variability of shells during evolution include mechanical stability,[15] defense against predators[16] and climatic selection.[17][18]

The shells of some gastropods have been reduced or partly reduced during their evolution. This reduction can be seen in all slugs, in semi-slugs and in various other marine and non-marine gastropods. Sometimes the reduction of the shell is associated with a predatory way of feeding.

Some taxa lost the coiling of their shell during evolution.[19] According to Dollo's law, it is not possible to regain the coiling of the shell after it is lost. Despite that, there are few genera in the family Calyptraeidae that changed their developmental timing (heterochrony) and gained back (re-evolution) a coiled shell from the previous condition of an uncoiled limpet-like shell.[19]

Sea slug, copied from Wikipedia [as on December 13, 2022]:

Sea slug is a common name for some marine invertebrates with varying levels of resemblance to terrestrial slugs. Most creatures known as sea slugs are gastropods, i.e. they are sea snails (marine gastropod mollusks) that over evolutionary time have either completely lost their shells, or have seemingly lost their shells due to having a greatly reduced or internal shell. The name "sea slug" is most often applied to nudibranchs, as well as to a paraphyletic set of other marine gastropods without obvious shells.[1]

Sea slugs have an enormous variation in body shape, color, and size. Most are partially translucent. The often bright colors of reef-dwelling species implies that these animals are under constant threat of predators, but the color can serve as a warning to other animals of the sea slug's toxic stinging cells (nematocysts) or offensive taste. Like all gastropods, they have small, razor-sharp teeth, called radulas. Most sea slugs have a pair of rhinophores—sensory  tentacles used primarily for the sense of smell—on their head, with a small eye at the base of each rhinophore. Many have feathery structures (cerata) on the back, often in a contrasting color, which act as gills. All species of genuine sea slugs have a selected prey animal on which they depend for food, including certain jellyfishbryozoanssea anemones, and plankton as well as other species of sea slugs.[2][3]

Sea slugs have brains. For example, Aplysia californica has a brain of about 20,000 nerve cells.[4]

Shell-less marine gastropods[edit]

The name "sea slug" is often applied to numerous different evolutionary lineages of marine gastropod molluscs or sea snails, specifically those gastropods that are either not conchiferous (shell-bearing) or appear not to be.[5] In evolutionary terms, losing the shell altogether, having a small internal shell, or having a shell so small that the soft parts of the animal cannot retract into it, are all features that have evolved many times independently within the class Gastropoda, on land and in the sea; these features often cause a gastropod to be labeled with the common name "slug".

Nudibranchs (clade Nudibranchia) are a large group of marine gastropods that have no shell at all. These may be the most familiar sort of sea slug. Although most nudibranchs are not large, they are often very eye-catching because so many species have brilliant coloration. In addition to nudibranchs, a number of other taxa of marine gastropods (some easily mistaken for nudibranchs) are also often called "sea slugs".[6]

Gastropod groups[edit]

Within the various groups of gastropods that are called "sea slugs", numerous families are within the informal taxonomic group Opisthobranchia:

The term "sea slug" is perhaps most often applied to nudibranchs, many of which are brightly patterned and conspicuously ornate. For two examples, see the images of Nembrotha aurea and Glossodoris atromarginata within this article.
The name "sea slug" is also often applied to the sacoglossans (clade Sacoglossa), the so-called sap-sucking or solar-powered sea slugs which are frequently a shade of green.
The sacoglossan Elysia crispata

Another group of main gastropods that are often labeled as "sea slugs" are the various families of headshield slugs and bubble snails within the clade Cephalaspidea.

The simple example of the snails and slugs informs us that they were created in good form, with a shell, yet the slugs lost it. Slugs have been bestowed colourful 'clothing' which cover their bodies, to hide their nakedness, and to provide beauty, among other functions, such as camouflage and defence.

The Quran informs us that Allah  ﷻ created Adam with His  own Hands [Q38:75].
The Quran informs us that humans were created in a very good form [Q95], and then we were reduced to the lowest of the low.

The Quran also informs us that Allah  ﷻ does not change the condition of a people until they themselves change what is in their 'nafs'. The Quran warns against making changes in the 'nafs'. Adam عليه السلام admitted that he had harmed his 'nafs' when he prayed for cover, and for mercy.

The Bible and The Quran present to us the example of Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) losing his clothing twice: first one taken by his brothers, the second torn by the Aziz's wife. The story of Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) helps us understand the story of Adam عليه السلام .
