[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

Adversity: Fatigue and Torment

...

DRAFT

And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful."
So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah].
[Al-Quran 21:83-84, Translation: Saheeh International]

And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment."
[Al-Quran 38:41 Translation: Saheeh International]

The Quran quotes Job (Ayub عليه السلام)'s two supplication.

The first is in Surah al-Anbiya (The Prophets), which is quoted at the beginning of this post. In it he supplicates that indeed he has been touched (أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ) by adversity (الضُّرُّ).

The second supplication is mentioned in Surah Saad. In it, Job (Ayub عليه السلام) specifically mentions that indeed he has been touched (أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ), by The Shaitan (الشَّيْطَانُ), with nusb ( بِنُصْبٍ) and azaab (عَذَابٍ).

So, the adversity (الضُّرُّ) mentioned in Q21:83 is explained in Q38:41 as nusb (بِنُصْبٍ) and azaab (عَذَابٍ) inflicted by The Shaitan (الشَّيْطَانُ).

Presuppositions

As per the learnings in previous posts, assuming that:

The Shaitan (الشَّيْطَانُ): Iblis, a snake

nusb (بِنُصْبٍ): fatigue

azaab (عَذَابٍ): torment, suffering

Let us explore the symptoms of snake bite: ...

Affliction, Cure, and The Roman Cult

And when I am ill, then He cures me, [Al-Quran 26:80]
Disease & Cure - XXV

The Prophet Job (Ayub عليه السلام) was suffering from prolonged illness, and had lost his family, and his wealth, as well. The Quran quotes his supplication (dua) that he had been touched by الضُّرُّ . In response to his supplication, he was cured: the affliction of adversity was removed from him, and he was given back his family, and more, as a mercy and a reminder.
The triliteral root ḍād rā rā (ض ر ر) occurs 74 times in the Quran, in 11 derived forms. It is variously translated as harm, hardship, distress, adversity, to force, to compel, affliction, misfortune, ...

Surah an-Naml (The Ant) employs the same root for the desperate one (الْمُضْطَرَّ) when posing the question:

Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah ? Little do you remember.
[Al-Quran 27:62, Translation: Saheeh International]

Surah ar-Rum (The Romans), ayat 30 defines the third of the three Standing Laws of Recompense:

[Al-Quran 30:30, Translation: edited for clarity by Samiya Illias]

It begins with the command to face towards the Deen (religion / law of Recompense) like a Hanif (monotheist, as was Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام)), to adhere to the fitrat of Allah ﷻ on which Allah ﷻ has 'fatara' humans, and warns that there should be no change in the creation of Allah , stating that this is the Standing Law of Recompense, and that most people don't know this.

The next few ayaat of Surah ar-Rum go on to describe the details. Focussing on the word  ضُرٌّ in ayat 33, it states:

And when adversity touches the people, they call upon their Lord, turning in repentance to Him. Then when He lets them taste mercy from Him, at once a party of them associate others with their Lord,
So that they will deny what We have granted them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
[Al-Quran 30:33-34 Translation: Saheeh International]

The Quran quotes Job (Ayub عليه السلام)'s two supplication. The first is in Surah al-Anbiya (The Prophets), which is quoted at the beginning of this post. The second supplication is mentioned in Surah Saad, which is a narration about rich, powerful men. In it, the supplication quoted is:

And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment."
[Al-Quran 38:41 Translation: Saheeh International]

The Surah concludes with the story of Iblis (Satan)'s rebellion, when Allah ﷻ commanded him to prostrate to Adam. The Bible clearly informs us that Satan is a snake/serpent. The Quran also informs us that Iblis is from the jinns, that is, ectotherms (links to posts about jinns).

The command to not to make changes in the creation of Allah ﷻ is in Surah ar-Rum (The Romans).
Ancient Roman Empire was pagan, who worshipped a pantheon of deities. Later on, they embraced Jesus (Isa عليه السلام ), and came to be known as Christians. It is said that when Muhammad   sent a letter to the Roman Emperor in Constantinople (New Rome), he treated the letter with respect. When our dear Prophet   heard about it, he prayed for him.

Coming back to the Roman Empire before Jesus (Isa عليه السلام ), in a post titled 'Ancient Roman medicine' in Medical News Today, it states:
By the 3rd century B.C.E., the Romans had adopted a religious healing system called the cult of Aesculapius, which took its name from a Greek god of healing. Initially, they built shrines, but these expanded in time to include spas and thermal baths with doctors in attendance.

When plagues occurred in Italy in 431 B.C.E, the Romans built a temple to the Greek god Apollo, who they believed had healing powers.

The Romans also took a sacred snake from the Greeks. It escaped but reappeared on the Tiber Island, where the Romans built a sanctuary for it. People would come to this place in search of healing.

On conquering Alexandria, the Romans found various libraries and universities that the Greeks had set up. They contained many learning centers and places for research as well as a wealth of documented knowledge of medicine.

The article traces the Roman and Greek medical history, significant names and ideas, and concludes with the takeaway:

Ancient Greek thinking and philosophy paved the way for significant advances in medicine.

In 129 C.E., Galen was born. He and other doctors would help to spread Greek ideas about medicine to the Roman Empire and beyond.

As a result, much of what the Greeks taught and learned about medicine still persists as a basis for modern scientific medicine.

To this day, the Rod of Asclepius (a stick with a snake entwined around it) is the symbol of the medical profession:

This rod is believed to a gift of Apollo to Asclepius. There is a clear association of the rod and the snake with the cult of Asclepius.

To quote from 'The spread of the cult of Asclepius in the context of the Roman army benefited from the presence of physicians: A spatial proximity analysis' in NIH and PLoS One

Asclepius was one of the most popular healing deities of the Greco-Roman world. Originally from Greece, the cult of this mythical son of Apollo was officially invited to Rome in 293 BCE and became firmly rooted in Roman society as a patron deity of health [1–5]. The uniqueness of Asclepius’ cult, when compared to other Graeco-Roman cults, lies in 1) the promise of a close relationship between the god and his supplicant, because the supplicant expected to meet the god in their dreams during the temple rituals of incubation; 2) the patients’ deep expectation of being healed; and 3) a non-exclusive membership for people across socio-economic groups [1, 3, 6]. A potential fourth point argued here is that the cult of Asclepius could have had a special appeal among Roman soldiers, as they were often in the need of medical care due to combat wounds or inhospitable environments at the border provinces of the Empire.

...

From the results visualized in Fig 4, it can be observed that the occurrence of the cult of Asclepius at or near the long-term legion bases is common in most of the provinces of interest except for Raetia and Noricum. Moreover, there are three sanctuaries of Asclepius directly in Roman settlements with long-term legion bases in Brigetio, Aquincum (Pannonia), and Apulum (Dacia) [5]. Additionally, in Aquincum, Carnuntum, Vindobona (Pannonia), and Novae (Moesia Inferior), the worship of Asclepius is attested in legionary hospitals (valetudinaria) [2, 5].

...

Roman physicians—Spatial proximity analysis and correlation

The spatial analyses described in the previous section thus support the argument forwarded by van der Ploeg and others that soldiers participated in the cult of Asclepius, this time from the perspective of data analysis. This allows us to hypothesize that the social environment of the Roman Army represented a favorable factor for the spread of the cult of Asclepius. The working hypothesis for the following spatial proximity analysis is that the spatial traces of Roman physicians are a relevant predictor for the spatial occurrence of the worship of Asclepius since they are indicators of activities related to health risk and treatment; i.e., activities compatible with the healing aspects attributed to Asclepius. The first step in testing this hypothesis was to visualize the relevant variables and inspect visible patterns (Fig 7).

...

Results

The results of the spatial proximity analysis based on the distances measured on the transportation network support the hypothesis proposed in the academic discussion that soldiers in antiquity were significant facilitators of the spread of ancient cults to new socio-spatial environments. The results also support this hypothesis in its more specific form, claiming that Roman soldiers had a positive impact on the spread of the cult of Asclepius. The spatial proximity analysis exploring the relationships between the long-term bases of Roman legions and proxies for the worship of Asclepius in the era of the Roman Empire revealed that the worship of Asclepius commonly appeared in the proximity of such bases in the majority of the provinces of interest comparably as the cults of Apollo and Minerva. The spatial distribution of the cult of Jupiter stands out as the most widespread. In some cases, this relationship was directly tied to a legion base or a military hospital within a base, which is considered in the academic discussion as an indicator that healing in the environment of Roman legions was considered a dual responsibility of physicians and deities with attributes related to medicine and that there was no conceptual division forcing the wounded soldiers to choose between divine and “human” medicine [2, 57].

In Surah al-Anbiya (The Prophets), we read:

Or do they have gods to defend them other than Us? They are unable [even] to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.
But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? So it is they who will overcome?
Say, "I only warn you by revelation." But the deaf do not hear the call when they are warned.
[Al-Quran 21:43-44-45, Translation: Saheeh International]

The Miracles through Jesus (Isa

In the backdrop of:

  • the stick and snake associated with Moses (Musa عليه السلام), as well as his raising the serpent on a pole story, when the Bani Israel were being bitten by fiery serpents for ungratefully  complaining against God (Allah ﷻ) and Moses (Musa عليه السلام);
  • and in the era of the Healing Cult of Asclepius in the Roman Empire; a people medically aware and able to appreciate the difference between human doctors, snake healers, and miracles of the true God, Allah ﷻ sent Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) as a Messenger to the Bani Israel (Q3:49), and showed many miracles through him:
    • Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) was born miraculously to a virgin woman (Virgin Birth)
    • Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) created birds from clay and breathed life in them, by permission of Allah ﷻ
    • Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) healed the born blind, and the leper, and gave life to the dead, by the permission of Allah ﷻ
    • Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) informed them of what they ate, and what they stored in their houses

Timeless Wisdom of Gratitude

The Quran contains a surah titled 'Luqman'. It is believed that Luqman was a famous 'Hakeem' (physician) in the ancient world. Some sources suggest that he was a great forefather of Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام). There are many legends about Hakeem Luqman. The Quran clarifies that the wisdom bestowed upon Luqman was Gratitude:

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
[Al-Quran 31:12, Translation: Saheeh International]

Gratitude is manifested as acts of worship. Prayer, charity, enjoining maroof, forbidding munkar, and bearing with patience whatever befalls as a consequence, ...

The Quran informs us that Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) was a totally grateful person:

Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah , inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[He was] grateful for His favors. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path.
 [Al-Quran 16:120-121, Translation: Saheeh International]

Prophet Job (Ayub عليه السلام) bore with patience all that befell him. His patience is legendary. He was ever-grateful to his Lord. The Quran informs us that Job (Ayub عليه السلام) was a descendant of Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام):

And We gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good.
And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias - and all were of the righteous.
[Al-Quran 6:84-85, Translation: Saheeh International]

Note that the ten descendants of Abraham (Ibrahim عليه السلام) mentioned in Q6:84 can be paired as:

  • father David (Daud عليه السلام) and son Solomon (Sulaiman عليه السلام
  • Job (Ayub عليه السلام) and Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام)
  • Moses (Musa عليه السلام) and Aaron (Haroon عليه السلام) brothers
  • father Zechariah (Zakariya عليه السلام) and son John (Yahya عليه السلام
  • Jesus (Isa عليه السلام) and Elijah (Elias عليه السلام)
    • both performed the miracle of raising the dead, by the permission of of Allah ﷻ
    • according to The Quran, Jesus (Isa عليه السلام)  was raised alive, and is expected to return
    • according to The Bible, Elijah (Elias عليه السلام) was raised alive, and is expected to return

So, perhaps, there is a connection between

  • Job (Ayub عليه السلام) and Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام)

There are various accounts of when and where Job (Ayub عليه السلام) lived. According to one account, he lived in Rome:

Prophet Ayyub (Job) was a descendant of Prophet Ibrahim. Ayyub’s mother was the daughter of Prophet Lut and his wife was a direct descendant of Prophet Yusuf. Ayyub lived in Rome with his dear wife Rahma and fourteen children.

Other sources place him in Egypt after Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام)  and before Moses (Musa عليه السلام) .  According to Wikipedia [as on October 25, 2022]:

Job (Arabic: أيوب, romanized: Ayūb) is known as a prophet in Islam and is mentioned in the Quran.[1] Job's story in Islam is parallel to the Hebrew Bible's story, although the main emphasis is on Job remaining steadfast to God; there is no mention of Job's discussions with friends in the Qur'anic text, but later Muslim literature states that Job had brothers, who argued with the man about the cause of his affliction. Some Muslim commentators also spoke of Job as being the ancestor of the Romans.[2] Islamic literature also comments on Job's time and place of prophetic ministry, saying that he came after Joseph in the prophetic series and that he preached to his own people rather than being sent to a specified community. Tradition further recounts that Job will be the leader in Heaven of the group of "those who patiently endured".[3]

And Allah ﷻ knows best

In surah al-Baqarah, ayat 177 includes patience in adversity (وَالصَّابِرِينَ فِي الْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ) as one of the ways to attain birr, and as a characteristic of those who have been true, and are pious:

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

Mosquito-borne Diseases

DRAFT

And when I am ill, then He cures me, [Al-Quran 26:80]

Disease & Cure - XXIV

Abstract

Mosquitoes transmit many diseases. Mosquito is a vector. Presently, scientists are trying to tackle the issue by genetically modifying mosquitoes to destroy mosquito populations.
The Quran specifically uses the female gender of the mosquito (بَعُوضَةً), and the female pronoun (هَا) to specify the creature which is upon her. Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes are bred by injecting the mosquito eggs with the bacteria. This bacteria-infecting method affects the Mosquito Germline, as the Wolbachia manipulates the reproduction of its host, not allowing eggs that do not have Wolbachia from hatching.

There are biting creatures tinier than mosquitoes, who prey on mosquitoes and on other creatures, including humans.

Reading about mosquitoes brings to mind many ayaat of The Quran. Mosquitoes transmit disease primarily by getting infected from humans. Mosquitoes are only vectors. The real problem originates from within humans. Destroying mosquito populations and/or manipulating them will result in unknown outcomes, and perhaps newer problems.

Indeed, Allah (is) not ashamed to set forth an example (like) even (of) a mosquito and (even) something above it. Then as for those who believed, [thus] they will know that it (is) the truth from their Lord. And as for those who disbelieved [thus] they will say what (did) intend Allah by this example? He lets go astray by it many and He guides by it many. And not He lets go astray by it except the defiantly disobedient.
Those who break (the) Covenant (of) Allah from after its ratification, and [they] cut what has ordered Allah it to be joined and [they] spread corruption in the earth. Those, they (are) the losers.
How (can) you disbelieve in Allah? While you were dead then He gave you life; then He will cause you to die, then He will give you life, then to Him you will be returned.
[Al-Quran 2:26-27-28, Translation: Word for word]

Allah has sent The Quran for our guidance. Many people take guidance from The Quran, while many people are led astray by the very same scripture. Q2:26 informs us that it is Allah Himself who guides and misguides with the same revelation, and clarifies that Allah misguides only the defiantly disobedient. Q2:27 defines the الْفَاسِقِينَ (defiantly disobedient), and the next ayat draws attention to our alternate non-living and living states of existence.  Then begins the story of Adam, his appointment as Khalifa, and the human history.

Mosquito & Something upon it

Mosquitoes live in natural surroundings, in gardens, jungles, tropics and the colder regions, even in the Arctic. They are found all over the world, except in Iceland and Antarctica. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, and have lived alongside humans and other creatures for several millennia.

Mosquitoes transmit many diseases.

Mosquito is a vector. According to World Health Organisation [as on October 7, 2022]:
Vectors

Vectors are living organisms that can transmit infectious pathogens between humans, or from animals to humans. Many of these vectors are bloodsucking insects, which ingest disease-producing microorganisms during a blood meal from an infected host (human or animal) and later transmit it into a new host, after the pathogen has replicated. Often, once a vector becomes infectious, they are capable of transmitting the pathogen for the rest of their life during each subsequent bite/blood meal.

Vector-borne diseases

Vector-borne diseases are human illnesses caused by parasites, viruses and bacteria that are transmitted by vectors.

To quote from AMCA webpage on diseases https://www.mosquito.org/page/diseases [as on October 7, 2022]:
Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism -- over one million people worldwide die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Not only can mosquitoes carry diseases that afflict humans, they also transmit several diseases and parasites that dogs and horses are very susceptible to. These include dog heartworm, West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). In addition, mosquito bites can cause severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva - this is what causes the red bump and itching. Mosquito vectored diseases include protozoan diseases, i.e., malaria, filarial diseases such as dog heartworm, and viruses such as dengue, encephalitis and yellow fever.

...

MALARIA

Malaria is an ancient disease. In all likelihood originating in Africa, it has been described by the Chinese as far back as 2700BC and the Sumerians from 1700 BC. The malaria parasite (plasmodium) is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.  ...

More than one million deaths and 300 - 500 million cases are still reported annually in the world. ...

The list of mosquito-borne diseases listed in the above quoted webpage are: Malaria, Chikungunya, Dog Heartworm, Dengue, Yellow Fever, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, LaCrosse Encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, and Zika Virus.

Presently, scientists are trying to tackle the issue by genetically modifying mosquitoes to destroy mosquito populations.

The Quran specifically uses the female gender of the mosquito (بَعُوضَةً), and the female pronoun (هَا) to specify the creature which is upon her. First, let us explore the example of a female mosquito, and then explore the creature upon her.

بَعُوضَةً (female mosquito)

To quote Wikipedia [as on October 8, 2022]:
Mosquito mouthparts are very specialized, particularly those of the females, which in most species are adapted to piercing skin and then sucking blood. Apart from bloodsucking, the females generally also drink assorted fluids rich in dissolved sugar, such as nectar and honeydew, to obtain the energy they need. For this, their blood-sucking mouthparts are perfectly adequate. In contrast, male mosquitoes are not bloodsuckers; they only drink sugary fluids. Accordingly, their mouthparts do not require the same degree of specialization as those of females.[65]
On the World Mosquito Program webpage How it works, it states [as on October 8, 2022]:

How mosquitoes spread disease

Mosquitoes pick up viruses by biting infected people. When they bite again, they can transmit the virus to the next person. This is how mosquito-borne diseases spread.

Mosquitoes do not naturally carry viruses – they can only get them from infected people.

Since only female mosquitoes bite humans, only female mosquitoes can transmit viruses.

Further down the webpage, they explain their bacterial control method [as on October 8, 2022]

How our Wolbachia method works

Our Wolbachia method is simple.

We discovered that when Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carry Wolbachia, the bacteria compete with viruses like dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.

This makes it harder for viruses to reproduce inside the mosquitoes. And the mosquitoes are much less likely to spread viruses from person to person.

This means that when Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carry natural Wolbachia bacteria, the transmission of viruses like dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever is reduced.

So, at the World Mosquito Program, we breed Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes. Then, in partnership with local communities, we release them into areas affected by mosquito-borne diseases.

Which means less risk of disease in communities where Wolbachia is established in the local mosquito population.

...

Our method is unique and effective

Unlike most other techniques that aim to prevent mosquito-borne diseases, our Wolbachia method is natural and self-sustaining.

Our method does not suppress mosquito populations or involve genetic modification (GM), as the genetic material of the mosquito is not altered.

Long-term monitoring shows that our natural Wolbachia method is self-sustaining in almost all international project sites, with the first mosquitoes released in 2011.

فَمَا فَوْقَهَا (something upon her)

There are biting creatures tinier than mosquitoes, who prey on mosquitoes and on other creatures, including humans.

To quote Wikipedia [as on October 12, 2022]:

Both males and females feed on nectar, however only the females take a blood meal, which is needed for the maturation of fertilized eggs.[2] Females typically bite at dusk or dawn often in dense swarms and usually in the vicinity of water, marshes or rotting vegetation.

...

To quote Scientific American's blog post titled 'Mosquitoes Have Flying, Blood-Sucking Parasites of Their Own' [posted on October 6, 2014]:

The biting midge Culicoides (Trithecoides) anophelis Edwards is a predator of engorged mosquitoes, which was first described by Edwards in 1922 [1].At least 19 mosquito species in the genera Anopheles, Culex, Aedes and Armigeres have been documented as hosts of C.

In 1922, a scientist named F.W. Edwards published a paper describing a remarkable thing: a flying, biting midge collected from the Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia that he named Culicoides anophelis. What made the midge was remarkable was the thing it bit: mosquitoes.

The blog also features a small video of a midge upon a mosquito. Below the video, to quote from the discussion:

... The host range of C. anophelis, like its geographic range, is enormous. It has been found to parasitize at least 19 species of mosquito, but it has also been collected sucking blood directly from buffaloes and cattle.

Culicoides midges are known carriers of bluetongue virus, Oropouche virus and Schmallenburg virus while mosquitoes they parasitize carry Dengue, West Nile, and Japanese encephalitis viruses. If mosquitoes are flying dirty syringes that spread disease among humans, parasitic midges may further scramble the disease load, introduce new viruses to new vectors, and generally add another order of magnitude to disease transmission calculus. But no one really knows. The studies, as authors of this paper point out, have yet to be done.

Khilafat of Adam, and the Responsibility of Humans

Reading about mosquitoes brings to mind many ayaat of The Quran, which I have been trying to understand in several previous posts.

  • Gene-editing: no change in creation Q30:30
    • So direct your face [i.e., self] toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fiṭrah of Allāh upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allāh. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
  • Wolbachai infecting: egg-cells injected with bacteria فساد Q30:41
    • Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He [i.e., Allāh] may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
  • Manipulating populations: Q2:205 destroying crops and progeny by directly manipulating mosquito populations, and affecting the ecosystem
    • And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allāh does not like corruption.
  • Partner in offsprings: Q17:64
    • And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.
  • Destroying male populations and letting females live: what فرؤن was doing with the Bani Israel Q2:49
    • And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
  • Parthenogenesis, haploid vs diploid: asexual reproduction
  • Mitochondria, female transmission to offspring, maternally inherited bacteria
  • Master control by bacteria:
  • Mosquitoes transmit disease primarily by getting infected from humans: Q4:79
    • What comes to you of good is from Allāh, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muḥammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allāh as Witness.
  • If Allah was to take humans to task, He would leave no moving creature: Q16:61
    • And if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].
    • and Q35:45
    • And if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allāh has ever been, of His servants, Seeing.

Contracting the Disease
  • nothing happens till Allah writes it for a person Q57:22
    • No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allāh, is easy -
  • Its okay for sick and healthy people to even eat together, as long as they send Salam on their nafs Q24:61
    • There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allāh, blessed and good. Thus does Allāh make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.
  • Good things happen from Allah, bad things due to our nafs Q4:78-79
    • Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction. But if good comes to them, they say, "This is from Allāh"; and if evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All [things] are from Allāh." So what is [the matter] with those people that they can hardly understand any statement?
    • What comes to you of good is from Allāh, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muḥammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allāh as Witness.
  • Shukar is the wisdom Q31:12
    • And We had certainly given Luqmān wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allāh." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
  • establish Prayer, enjoin the Maroof, forbid the Munkar, and endure patiently whatever befalls you Q31:17
    • O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] resolve.

Mosquitoes are only vectors. The real problem originates from within humans. We need to address the root causes, and do more of acts of gratitude for Allah, and acts of personal reform. Destroying mosquito populations and/or manipulating them will result in unknown outcomes, and perhaps newer problems.

To quote from Surah at-Taubah ayat 51

Say, "Never will we be struck except by what Allāh has decreed for us; He is our protector." And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
