[Al-Quran 50:6-8] Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and how it has no rifts? And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind, Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].

The Creature that will Speak with Humans

according to Al-Quran and Hadith of Prophet Muhammad

< —————— >

The following is adapted from: The Serpent & The Snake: a Clear Sign:

The Moving Creature from The Earth

And when the saying fell on them, We will bring out a moving creature for them from the earth that will speak to them, that: Humanity had not been certain of Our signs.
[Al-Quran 27:82, Translation: Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar]

Surah an-Naml (The Ant) recounts the story of Moses' staff becoming a snake, then goes on to mention Solomon's army which includes birds and snakes, and their ability to speak with each other. Then, the Queen Ant warning her ants; the Hoopoe who goes on a reconnaissance mission; the Sun-worshipping Queen of Saba; Solomon's warning letter demanding submission to the true religion; the throne of Saba being transported in the blink of an eye to Solomon's court; the Queen of Saba realising how she had been wronging her nafs, and consequently accepting the true religion; and then it flashes back to the Samood: the nine groups in the city plotting to kill their Messenger of Allah:

And there had been nine groups of persons in the city who make corruption in the earth and make not things right.
[Al-Quran 27:48, Translation: Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar]

The surah continues with a brief mention of the destruction of the Samood; and then an overview of the impurity-loving people to whom Messenger Lot had been sent to, and how they were also destroyed.

After a few pertinent questions establishing Allah as the only true ilah (god), the surah foretells the emergence of the moving creature from the Earth who will speak with humans!

Hadith of Prophet Muhammad

Sunan Ibn Majah 4066

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah () said: “The Beast will emerge and will have with it the seal of Sulaiman bin Dawud and the staff of Musa bin ‘Imran (as). It will make the faces of the believers shine with the staff, and will mark the noses of the disbelievers with the seal, until the inhabitants of a cluster of houses will gather together; then one will say ‘O believer!’ And to another ‘O disbeliever.’”

The Thamud were given the she-camel as a clear sign. They were warned not to harm her. Disbelieving and disobeying, they not only harmed the she-camel, they also conspired to kill their Messenger of Allah, Saleh, and his family. Their plan came to naught, and the Thamud were utterly destroyed.

… we read in Q17:60

What they did to the She-Camel

Trying to understand what the Thamud did to the she-camel

The Thamud were given a she-camel as a sign from Allah, and were clearly warned against harming her, lest they incur an immediate punishment.

As can be seen from the table below, across The Quran, we find five mentions of what they did to the she-camel. It is generally translated as ‘hamstrung’. Some translations do have words like: ‘slaughtered’, ‘killed’, ‘crippled’, ‘mistreated’, ‘wounded’, ‘slew’, ‘butchered’, ‘disabled’ as can be seen at https://www.islamawakened.com/quran/11/65/. However, these words have different words in Arabic.

The root of the wordعَقَرُو is also used in three other places in The Quran, by Zakaria, to describe the condition of his ‘woman’ عَاقِرًا , which is why she cannot bear a child (see table below).  We find this word mostly translated as ‘barren’, and in some translations as ‘sterile’, ‘infertile’, ‘childless’, as can be checked at: https://www.islamawakened.com/quran/19/5/default.htm

However, the word عَقِيمٌ is used in The Quran to describe another condition, also generally translated as barren. See https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=Eqm#(22:55:16)

The Quran places great emphasis on Guarding the Womb

The following is copied from: https://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=Eqr#(11:65:1)

The triliteral root ʿayn qāf rā (ع ق ر) occurs eight times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • five times as the form I verb ʿaqara (عَقَرَ)
  • three times as the active participle ʿāqir (عَاقِر)

…

Verb (form I) - to hamstrung

(7:77:1) faʿaqarū

Then they hamstrung

(11:65:1) faʿaqarūhā

But they hamstrung her

(26:157:1) faʿaqarūhā

But they hamstrung her

(54:29:4) faʿaqara

and hamstrung

(91:14:2) faʿaqarūhā

and they hamstrung her

Active participle

(3:40:11) ʿāqirun

(is) [a] barren

(19:5:8) ʿāqiran

barren

(19:8:9) ʿāqiran

barren

Maroof & Munkar

DRAFT

Surah at-Taubah, ruku #9, ayaat 67 to 72

67

67. The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

68. Allah has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally. It is sufficient for them. And Allah has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.

69. [You disbelievers are] like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have engaged [in vanities] like that in which they engaged. [It is] those whose deeds have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.

70. Has there not reached them the news of those before them - the people of Noah and [the tribes of] 'Aad and Thamud and the people of Abraham and the companions of Madyan and the towns overturned? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. And Allah would never have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

71. The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

72. Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.

Translation: https://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=9&translator=29

This ruku of Surah at-Taubah presents a clear contrast between the believers (الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ) and the hypocrites (الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتُ).

Q9:67

67

The salient, distinguishing feature of the hypocrite men and hypocrite women is that they
1) enjoin the Munkar ( يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ
2) and forbid the Maroof
3) and withhold their hands (وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ

Generally, the phrases are translated as:

They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands.

Munkar can also be understood as: unlawful || wickedness || unrecognised

Maroof can also be understood as: lawful || decent || recognised

The third phrase in this set can also be understood as: to close || clench || withdraw their hands

Laleh Bakhtiar translates ayat Q9:67 as:

The ones who are male hypocrites and the ones who are female hypocrites, some are of some other. They command that which is unlawful and prohibit that which is honorable and close their hands. They forgot God so He forgot them. Truly, the ones who are hypocrites, they are the ones who disobey.

T. B. Irving translates Q9:67 as:

Hypocrites, whether men or women, resemble one another: they command wickedness, forbid decency, and clench their fists. They have forgotten God, so He has forgotten them. Hypocrites are so immoral!

———

Q9:71

71

On the contrary, the salient distinguishing feature of the believing men and believing women is that they

1) enjoin the Maroof ( يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
2) and forbid the Munkar
5) and obey Allah and His Messenger

Laleh Bakhtiar translates ayat Q9:71 as:

The males, ones who believe and the females, ones who believe, some are protectors of some other. They command to that which is honorable and they prohibit that which is unlawful and they perform the formal prayer and give the purifying alms and obey God and His Messenger. Those, God will have mercy on them. Truly, God is Almighty, Wise.

T. B. Irving translates Q9:71 as:

Believers, whether men or women, must [act as] friends to one another; they should command decency and forbid wickedness, keep up prayer, and pay the welfare tax as well as obey God and His messenger. Those God will grant mercy to; God is Powerful, Wise!

—————

Spending and Withholding are linked with the quality of faith.

Paying zakat is a means of growth of the Nafs.

Sexual relations are a means of multiplying the Nafs.

Thinking in terms of honourable, decent and recognised, as contrasted with unlawful, wicked and unrecognised, what immediately comes to mind is the institution of marriage, whereby a Believing man ratifies a covenant with a Believing woman, undertaking the financial responsibility of her, as well, and of the family which they may be blessed with as a result of their relationship, while she dedicates her womb to him.

On the contrary, when people indulge in non-marital sexual relations, they do not undertake the rights or the responsibilities enjoined by Allah.

————

When people pay zakat, the economic imbalance of the society is addressed. The poor will be less desperate.

————

Surah at-Taubah is about waging war to establish the Deen of Allah, after a two decades long effort to spread the message Islam.

Surah Al-Noor begins thus:

A sura which We have sent down and which We have ordained in it have We sent down Clear Signs, in order that ye may receive admonition.
The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by God, if ye believe in God and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.
Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden.

Al-Quran, Surah al-Noor, Ayaat 1-3, Translation: A. Yusuf Ali

——————

It is important to mention here that The Quran is very clear that all men and women are responsible and accountable, as it is Al-Insaan who volunteered to undertake the Trust:

We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth and the mountains; but they refused to bear it and feared it,
yet the human being took it onHe has always been unjust and ignorant,
[This is in order that] God punishes the hypocrites, men and women, as well as the men and women who associate others with Him
and why God turns mercifully towards the believing men and women, for God is the Ever-Forgiving, the Mercy Giver.

Major Sins & True Repentance

Mapping the three major sins in Surah al-Furqan, ayat 68, with the three definitions of الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ

Holy Quran 25:68

------------------

And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

Holy Quran 25:69

------------------

Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -

The three sins listed in Q25:68 are:

1) committing shirk

2) killing of a Nafs forbidden to kill

3) committing zina

Mapping them to the الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ ayaat:

1) Shirk

Holy Quran 12:40

------------------

You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Allah is the only ilah, the only God. Joining partners with him is the greatest sin, the ultimate Zulm one can commit.

2) Killing a Nafs forbidden to kill

Holy Quran 9:36

------------------

Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].

Allah has declared killing any Nafs without right a grave sin. Moreover, Allah has declared the life of believers sacred. During the sacred months, fighting is forbidden. However, fitna must be contained. Therefore, he has charged the believers to collectively fight against the disbelievers, as they fight against them. More on this at: Wronging the Nafs - II (The Forbidden & The Sacred)

3) Zina

Holy Quran 30:30

------------------

So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Allah has separated us into families. He has made our lineages and appointed our in-laws (Q25:54). Allah has created from our Nafs, our mates, for us, so that we find tranquility in them (Q30:21).

AlDeen AlQayim (الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ) is generally translated as the correct religion. I understand it to literally mean the standing laws of recompense. Allah, the Malik of the Day of Recompense (Q1:4), will recompense us when we will all stand before him on the Day of Recompense.

Allah, Ar-Rahman, has granted us this life to repent from our sinfulness, and has kept the door of repentance (taubah) open for whoever wishes to truly repent.

After listing the three major sins in Q25:68, the next few ayaat define True Repentance

Holy Quran 25:70

------------------

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Holy Quran 25:71

------------------

And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah with [accepted] repentance.

Magic

DRAFT

...
Surah Ta Ha relates the duel between Moses and Pharaoh’s magicians. It describes the magic as something that appears to be something else:

66

66. He said: Nay, do ye throw! Then lo! their cords and their staves, by their magic, appeared to him as though they ran.

67. And Moses conceived a fear in his mind.

68. We said: Fear not! Lo! thou art the higher.

69. Throw that which is in thy right hand! It will eat up that which they have made. Lo! that which they have made is but a wizard's artifice, and a wizard shall not be successful to whatever point (of skill) he may attain.

70. Then the wizards were (all) flung down prostrate, crying: We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses

The wizards, that is, the magicians, immediately recognised that what Moses displayed was not magic. His staff did indeed turn into a serpent. So, it is no wonder that when confronted with reality, these highly skilled magicians immediately abandoned their skills, and prostrated to Allah, the real and only God.

These days there is a lot of discussion about hacking reality. Brilliant people are trying to bend reality by hacking into consciousness; by manipulating energy, frequency, and vibration (Tesla); and so on. Awakening is a popular key word. Videos of real people with mind-boggling talents are increasingly made public. Perhaps, the popular spoon-bending scene from the movie Matrix is a good example, and widely cited. To paraphrase a famous saying, a sufficiently advanced technology will be indistinguishable from magic.

Keeping all of the above in mind, it’s interesting to read how Surah ash-Shu’ara narrates the conversation between Moses and Pharaoh, and then the duel scene. Moses was demanding that Pharaoh let the Bani Israel go with Moses to worship their God, Allah, for three days in the desert to hold a pilgrim feast (Exodus 5:1). I understand the request was to be able to perform Hajj, announced by Abraham (Q22:26-27). The following conversation takes place between Moses and Pharaoh:

23

23. Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?

24. (Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.

25. (Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?

26. He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.

27. (Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!

28. He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.

29. (Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.

30. He said: Even though I show thee something plain?

31. (Pharaoh) said: Produce it then, if thou art of the truthful!

32. Then he flung down his staff and it became a serpent manifest,

33. And he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.

34. (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,

35. Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?

36. They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners

37. Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.

38. So the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.

39. And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?

40. (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners.

41. And when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?

42. He said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).

43. Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!

44. Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.

45. Then Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.

46. And the wizards were flung prostrate,

47. Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

48. The Lord of Moses and Aaron.

49. (Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.

50. They said: It is no hurt, for lo! unto our Lord we shall return.

51. Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers

The Quran is very clear that magicians shall not prosper. Hacking reality is not okay. Hacking consciousness is not okay. Playing mind-games is not okay. The price is very high: the Nafs. As stated in Surah al-Baqarah:

102

102. And follow that which the devils falsely related against the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon disbelieved not; but the devils disbelieved, teaching mankind magic and that which was revealed to the two angels in Babel, Harut and Marut. Nor did they (the two angels) teach it to anyone till they had said: We are only a temptation, therefore disbelieve not (in the guidance of Allah). And from these two (angles) people learn that by which they cause division between man and wife; but they injure thereby no-one save by Allah's leave. And they learn that which harmeth them and profiteth them not. And surely they do know that he who trafficketh therein will have no (happy) portion in the Hereafter; and surely evil is the price for which they sell their souls, if they but knew.
