Glad Tidings: Reformed Family Reunited



 رَبِّ قَدْ آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِي مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ

My Lord! Thou hast given me of the kingdom and taught me of the interpretation of sayings: Originator Separator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my guardian in this world and the hereafter; make me die a muslim and join me with the good reformed.

This prayer by Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) acknowledges Allah as the Lord and Sustainer (رَبِّ), Grantor of kingdom (آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الْمُلْكِ), Teacher of knowledge of interpretation of events (عَلَّمْتَنِي مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ), Separator of the skies and earth (فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ), Guardian in this world and the hereafter (وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ), the Taker in death (تَوَفَّنِي), and then appeals for death as a muslim and to be joined with the reformed. 



Backdrop 
Surah Yusuf is a beautiful story about a Believer (Yusuf, english: Joseph) being reunited with his family after several years of separation. The story begins with a wondrous dream that is shown to Joseph. His elder brothers concoct a plot to get rid of little Joseph. This leads to the separation of little Joseph from his family. After many years, eventually, the brothers are humbled before Joseph. They admit their fault and seek forgiveness for their sin.

Surah Yusuf relates to us many contrasts in human nature, and provides many psychological insights.

In Joseph's brothers and in the character of the wife of Aziz, we see Satan's exploitation of the weaknesses in human character and the consequent vices leading them to commit sins. It is also a story of discontent with what Allah has granted or withheld from them, and attempting to change the course according to their desires. Envy, passion, slander, gossip, self-righteousness, etc. can be noted in how they play out in the development of events. It is a story about eventual realisation and reform.

It is also a story of how Allah is in complete control, and how nothing can frustrate Allah's plans. The story also holds lessons in trusting Allah's will even when we do not understand the wisdom. It is also a story about Allah granting wisdom and power to whom He Wills, and that Allah's decisions are always right! It is a reminder that Allah never lets the reward to be lost of those who fear Allah and are patient, and continuously do good kindly deeds. It is a story about the eventual success achieved through submission to Allah.

In Joseph and his father, we note: piety and beautiful patience, never losing hope in the Mercy of Allah, restraining oneself from sinful desires, doing the right thing, choosing imprisonment over comfort to be able to continue being pious, acknowledging the inclination of the nafs towards sin, the toll that suppression of grief takes on the health of the body, how the desire to be reunited with a loved one affects the vision, not complaining to anyone except Allah, trusting Allah's Promises and His Plans, and awaiting Allah's Plans to unfold, restoration of health and power, and gratitude for all that is granted.

The story concludes with a beautiful scene:

وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيْهِ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا لَهُ سُجَّدًا ۖ وَقَالَ يَا أَبَتِ هَـٰذَا تَأْوِيلُ رُؤْيَايَ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّي حَقًّا ۖ وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِي إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِي مِنَ السِّجْنِ وَجَاءَ بِكُم مِّنَ الْبَدْوِ مِن بَعْدِ أَن نَّزَغَ الشَّيْطَانُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ إِخْوَتِي ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي لَطِيفٌ لِّمَا يَشَاءُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ

And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.

And so we read in the next ayat (Q12:101) Joseph praying that he is granted death as a Muslim and is joined with the reformed (وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ). Note that in his prayer, he especially mentions that Allah is his Lord/Sustainer (رَبِّ), and that Allah is the Separator (فَاطِرَ) of the skies and earth.



To Separate
Fatir (فَاطِرَ) means Separator, as studied in the post: Allah, fāṭir (فَاطِر) of the Skies and Earth. We find references to this act of Allah in several quotes across The Quran, both in terms of separation of the skies and earth, and in the separation of individual humans, as stated by Prophet Abraham (Q43:27), Messenger Hud (Q11:51), the unnamed Believer mentioned in the story of the town in Surah Yasin (Q36:22), and the magicians who fell in prostration when Moses' staff converted into a serpent and devoured all their magic (Q20:72).



To Join 
Another concept is that of joining or re-unification, as denoted by the word: أَلْحِقْنِي . The root lām ḥā qāf (ل ح ق) occurs in The Quran six times in the following ayaat:

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُم مِّنْ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ ۚ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ

And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained.
[Al-Quran 52:21, Translation: Saheeh International]



The Reformed
It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that in Prophet Abraham is the best example to follow. The Quran exhorts us to do acts of reform, and informs us that Prophet Abraham will be among the reformed: 

وَمَن يَرْغَبُ عَن مِّلَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِلَّا مَن سَفِهَ نَفْسَهُ ۚ وَلَقَدِ اصْطَفَيْنَاهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَإِنَّهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ لَمِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ

And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous الصَّالِحِينَ.

The Quran quotes Abraham as professing that 'when I am ill, it is He who cures me' (Q26:80); praying for wisdom and to be joined with the righteous/reformed/uncorrupted (وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ) (Q26:83); and stating that those who comes with a sound heart (بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ) (Q26:89) will be successful in the Hereafter. 

Excerpt from The Right Religion:
Al-Quran 20:118 informs us that there was enough in the Garden for Adam and his wife to neither go naked nor hungry. In Adam’s Attempt to Improve upon Allah’s Creation, I have discussed the genetic loss of natural clothing that Adam and his wife suffered in their pursuit of Immortality. It’s a loss we all witness constantly on our own bodies (our bare skin) throughout our lives. Our clothing is a sign from Allah!
Surah at-Teen reasons that since humans have gone from being an excellent creation to a much lower form, then how can anyone belie the Deen:   

 Excerpt from Days of Allah:
Prophet Solomon’s Prayer
Prophet-King Solomon (Sulaiman) was the heir of Prophet-King David (Dawood). He was granted a mighty kingdom such that no one shall be granted after him [Qur’an 35:35 – 35:39]. Flashing back to the trial of Adam in the Garden and consequent corruption of his genome, as discussed in Adam’s Attempt to Improve upon Allah’s Creation, the prayer of Prophet Solomon (Sulaiman) asking to be included among the ‘salaiheen’ takes on a new meaning in the context of the correction of the genome:
[Al Qur’an 27:19] So he smiled - laughing at her speech and said, "My Lord! Grant me (the) power that I may thank You (for) Your Favor which You have bestowed on me and on my parents and that I may do righteous (deeds), that will please You. And admit me by Your Mercy among Your slaves righteous."
The root ‘S-L-H’ for the word ‘alssaliheena’, generally translated as righteous, is defined in Lane’s Lexicon page 1714 as  … it, and he, was, or became, good, incorrupt, right, just, righteous, virtuous or honest; it was, or became, in a good, incorrupt, right, sound or proper, state, or in a state of order; …  


A Muslim  
After informing us that Prophet Abraham will be among the reformed (الصَّالِحِينَ) in the Hereafter, Surah alBaqarah continues to inform us:

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُ رَبُّهُ أَسْلِمْ ۖ قَالَ أَسْلَمْتُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

وَوَصَّىٰ بِهَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بَنِيهِ وَيَعْقُوبُ يَا بَنِيَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَىٰ لَكُمُ الدِّينَ فَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ

أَمْ كُنتُمْ شُهَدَاءَ إِذْ حَضَرَ يَعْقُوبَ الْمَوْتُ إِذْ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن بَعْدِي قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ إِلَـٰهَكَ وَإِلَـٰهَ آبَائِكَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ إِلَـٰهًا وَاحِدًا وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ

تِلْكَ أُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ ۖ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُم مَّا كَسَبْتُمْ ۖ وَلَا تُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds."
And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion (الدِّينَ), so do not die except while you are Muslims."
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.

Sincere submission to Allah is the legacy of Abraham, the Hanif, that we are supposed to emulate if we hope for a beautiful hereafter. Surah al-Bayinnah ayat 5 sums it up as sincerity in the deen, worshipping as a hanif, establishing prayer and giving zakat, terming it as the (دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ) the standing/established law of recompense:

وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءَ وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ۚ وَذَ‌ٰلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ

[Al-Quran 98:5]


The Laws of Recompense 

قَالَ لَا يَأْتِيكُمَا طَعَامٌ تُرْزَقَانِهِ إِلَّا نَبَّأْتُكُمَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِ قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ ذَ‌ٰلِكُمَا مِمَّا عَلَّمَنِي رَبِّي ۚ 
إِنِّي تَرَكْتُ مِلَّةَ قَوْمٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَهُم بِالْآخِرَةِ هُمْ كَافِرُونَ

He said: "Before any food comes (in due course) to feed either of you, I will surely reveal to you the truth and meaning of this ere it befall you: that is part of the (duty) which my Lord hath taught me. 
I have (I assure you) abandoned the ways of a people that believe not in Allah and that (even) deny the Hereafter.

He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. 
Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.

Surah Yusuf is also a story of two parallel deens (laws of recompense): 
  • the first is the deen of Allah, the Real King, which is the legacy of the Abrahamic religions, to which submit Jacob (Israel) and his sons (Bani Israel), including Joseph, which he even propounds while held in prison (Q12:40)  
  • the other is the deen of the King of Egypt, where Joseph arrives after being separated from his family, and where eventually, he comes to assume an important post in the government of the King of Egypt. 
As a Prophet and as an important functionary in the government, Joseph therefore has two sets of laws: one based on his religion, according to which he hopes to be recompensed for his deeds in the Hereafter, and interestingly is also used in the missing cup scene in the story, in lieu of the Egyptian legal system, which is the other set of laws that Joseph is serving under. Thus, in this story, we can see the deen, the shariah and the law of the land, similar to the situation many believers find themselves in today.  

Our daily prayers include prayer for guidance on the straight or established path (اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ) and acknowledge Allah as the King of the Day of Judgment or Recompense (مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ):  





May Allah grant us that we become sincere to Him and submit to His Laws
May Allah grant us death as Muslims and unite us with the Reformed

The Night: A Sign!

Abstract 
The darkness of the night is a sign of the absence of enlightenment, and the layers of darkness that enshroud those who reject the message.  



Full Text 

وَآيَةٌ لَّهُمُ اللَّيْلُ نَسْلَخُ مِنْهُ النَّهَارَ فَإِذَا هُم مُّظْلِمُونَ

وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا ۚ ذَ‌ٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ
وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُونِ الْقَدِيمِ
لَا الشَّمْسُ يَنبَغِي لَهَا أَن تُدْرِكَ الْقَمَرَ وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ ۚ وَكُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ

And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw therefrom the Day, and behold they are plunged in darkness;
And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.
And the Moon,- We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.
It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).

Pieces of Night 
The root letters ظ ل م used to form the word مُّظْلِمُونَ occurs 315 times across The Quran. It lends itself to the meanings of wrong, injustice and darkness.  In Surah Yunus, ayat 21 informs us that everything humans are planning is being recorded. A few ayaat later, we read: 

وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
 ۞ لِّلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الْحُسْنَىٰ وَزِيَادَةٌ ۖ وَلَا يَرْهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمْ قَتَرٌ وَلَا ذِلَّةٌ ۚ أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

وَالَّذِينَ كَسَبُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ جَزَاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ بِمِثْلِهَا وَتَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ مَّا لَهُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ ۖ كَأَنَّمَا أُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ قِطَعًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مُظْلِمًا ۚ أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight.
To those who do right is a goodly (reward)- Yea, more (than in measure)! No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! they are companions of the garden; they will abide therein (for aye)!
But those who have earned evil will have a reward of like evil: ignominy will cover their (faces): No defender will they have from (the wrath of) Allah: Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the darkness of night: they are companions of the Fire: they will abide therein (for aye)!

Layers of Darkness  
If the darkness of the night is a sign of the absence of enlightenment, then Surah an-Nur describes layers of darkness that the وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا (those who reject the message and/or are ungrateful for it) are shrouded in: 

أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُّجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِّن فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا ۗ وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِن نُّورٍ

Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light نُورًا ), there is no light (نُّورٍ ) !

From Darknesses to Enlightenment 
Ayat-ul-Kursi (Q2:255) is perhaps one of the most famous comprehensive ayat of The Quran. It is followed by the ayat which declares that there is no compulsion in The Deen (لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ), and whoever holds the Rope of Allah has held on to the strongest handhold which never breaks! Then in the next ayat, we read: 

اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ
ۖ
وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَوْلِيَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ النُّورِ إِلَى الظُّلُمَاتِ ۗ

 أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light (النُّورِ). 
Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. 
They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever).

The Deen 
The word deen is generally translated as religion. A literal rendition of the phrase الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ can be The Standing Laws. This is how I understand the deen, as defined in the following three ayaat:

Polytheism: The Sin committed by The First Human Couple

Abstract
The first shirk (polytheism) was committed by the first human couple. Shirk is a grave injustice, and unforgivable if a person does not repent from it in this life. 


Full Text 

هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّاهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ فَلَمَّا أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا اللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ آتَيْتَنَا صَالِحًا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ
فَلَمَّا آتَاهُمَا صَالِحًا جَعَلَا لَهُ شُرَكَاءَ فِيمَا آتَاهُمَا فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
أَيُشْرِكُونَ مَا لَا يَخْلُقُ شَيْئًا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ

It is He who created you from one soul nafs (مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ) and created from it her its her mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah , their Lord, "If You should give us a good [child]  صَالِحًا, we will surely be among the grateful."
But when He gives them a good [child]صَالِحًا, they ascribe partners to Him concerning that which He has given them. Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.
Do they associate with Him those who create nothing and they are [themselves] created?

The Quran informs us of the creation of the first human nafs, which is feminine, the creation of her male mate from that first nafs herself; the mating of this first human couple, and the subsequent conception and birth of the first human baby. 
While the baby is developing in the womb, they pray for the child to be صَالِحًا (root: ص ل ح), words formed with which are translated in shades of right, reform, amend. I understand this to imply the development of a healthy baby. They pray that if they are granted a healthy baby, they will be grateful to Allah ﷻ .   
However, when the baby is born, they commit the sin of associating partners to Allah ﷻ  . Thus, the first shirk (polytheism) was committed by the first human couple. Shirk is a grave injustice, and unforgivable, if a person does not repent from it in this life. In Surah an-Nisa` we find this fact mentioned twice:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَىٰ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا

God forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with God is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا

God forgiveth not (The sin of) joining other gods with Him; but He forgiveth whom He pleaseth other sins than this: one who joins other gods with God, Hath strayed far, far away (from the right).

Surah Luqman stresses on the wisdom of gratitude. Luqman begins his advice to his son thus:  

وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ

Behold, Luqman said to his son by way of instruction: "O my son! join not in worship (others) with God: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing."

Who were the first human couple? The Quran does not mention them by name nor does it give any details about them. The popular belief across Abrahamic religions is that Adam (عليه السلام and Eve were the first human couple. Obviously, The Bible and The Quran are informing us of different events: 
  • The Quran 7:189 informs us of the very first human female nafs, and her male mate, as discussed above, 
  • The Bible Genesis 1 27 is informing us of the creation of humans: 'male and female He created them', and 
  • The Quran 75:39 is informing us the creation of humans: male and female, and 
  • The Bible Genesis 2 7 is informing us of the creation of Adam from the dust of the Earth
However, there is no direct mention of Adam (عليه السلام being the first human. He was the first human khalifa (Q2:30). The Quran 3:59 compares Adam (عليه السلام) and Jesus (Isa عليه السلام:

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَىٰ عِندَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be". And he was.

Perhaps the Adam (عليه السلام) mentioned in The Quran was the first of a specie of the genus Homo, our Most Recent Common Ancestor, the y-chromosomal Adam of our specie, as discussed in another post. Surah al-A`raaf ayat 11 indicates the presence of other humans prior to Adam (عليه السلام)

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ

And We have certainly created you, [O Mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated.

The surah goes on to inform us of the story of Adam (عليه السلام) and how Satan (Iblees) led him to sin through deceit. Then, towards the end, ayat 7:172 informs us of an event that involved the sons of Adam (عليه السلام) and all their progeny:

وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَنِي آدَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ شَهِدْنَا أَن تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَٰذَا غَافِلِينَ
أَوْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أَشْرَكَ آبَاؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِّن بَعْدِهِمْ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ
وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls أَنفُسِهِمْ: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes! we bear witness. Lest you should say on the day of resurrection: Surely we were heedless of this.
Or you should say: Only our fathers associated others (with Allah) before, and we were an offspring after them: Wilt Thou then destroy us for what the vain doers did?
And thus do We make clear the communications, and that haply they might return.

The DEEN (الدِّينِ)
The Quran defines the deen-e-qayimah (standing laws || right religion || the religion the correct ) in three ayat (Q9:36, Q12:40, Q30:30). The following is how I have come to understand them:

The Torah & The Quran

The Book

الم
ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ وَبِالْآخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ
أُولَٰئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

Alif Lām Mīm.
That is the Book—there is no doubt ^in it^, a guidance for the ones who are Godfearing:
Those who believe in the unseen and perform the formal prayer, and they spend out of what We provided them,
and those who believe in what was caused to descend to thee, and what was caused to descend before thee, and they are certain of the world to come.
Those are on a guidance from their Lord and those, they are the ones who prosper.

The Book, The Torah & The Gospel, & The Criteria 


نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَأَنزَلَ التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنجِيلَ
مِن قَبْلُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَنزَلَ الْفُرْقَانَ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو انتِقَامٍ

He sent down to thee the Book with The Truth, that which establishes as true what was before it. And He caused to descend the Torah and the Gospel
before this as a guidance for humanity. And He caused to descend the Criterion between right and wrong. Truly, those who were ungrateful for the signs of God, for them is a severe punishment. And God is Almighty, Possessor of Requital.

Submission to Allah 


إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الْإِسْلَامُ وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْيًا بَيْنَهُمْ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ

Truly the way of life with God is submission to the One God. And at variance were those who were given the Book after what drew near them of the knowledge out of insolence among themselves. And whoever is ungrateful for the signs of God, then, truly, God is Swift in reckoning.

Torah: Guidance & Nur 

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَا التَّوْرَاةَ فِيهَا هُدًى وَنُورٌ يَحْكُمُ بِهَا النَّبِيُّونَ الَّذِينَ أَسْلَمُوا لِلَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالرَّبَّانِيُّونَ وَالْأَحْبَارُ بِمَا اسْتُحْفِظُوا مِن كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَكَانُوا عَلَيْهِ شُهَدَاءَ فَلَا تَخْشَوُا النَّاسَ وَاخْشَوْنِ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا بِآيَاتِي ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا وَمَن لَّمْ يَحْكُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ

Truly, We caused the Torah to descend wherein is guidance and light. The Prophets give judgment with it, those who submitted to God, for those who became Jews and the rabbis and learned Jewish scholars who committed to memory the Book of God and they had been witnesses to it. So dread not humanity, but dread Me. And exchange not My signs for a little price. And whoever gives not judgment by what God caused to descend, those, they are the ones who are ungrateful.

The Tablets 

وَكَتَبْنَا لَهُ فِي الْأَلْوَاحِ مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَّوْعِظَةً وَتَفْصِيلًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَخُذْهَا بِقُوَّةٍ وَأْمُرْ قَوْمَكَ يَأْخُذُوا بِأَحْسَنِهَا سَأُرِيكُمْ دَارَ الْفَاسِقِينَ

And We wrote down for him on the Tablets something of all things and an admonishment and a decisive explanation of all things. So take these with firmness and command thy folk to take what is fairer. I will cause you to see the abodes of the ones who disobey.

The Torah & The Quran 

فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ عِندِنَا قَالُوا لَوْلَا أُوتِيَ مِثْلَ مَا أُوتِيَ مُوسَىٰ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفُرُوا بِمَا أُوتِيَ مُوسَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ قَالُوا سِحْرَانِ تَظَاهَرَا وَقَالُوا إِنَّا بِكُلٍّ كَافِرُونَ

قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِكِتَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ هُوَ أَهْدَىٰ مِنْهُمَا أَتَّبِعْهُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ


But when The Truth drew near them from Us they said: Why was he not given the like of what was given to Moses? They are ones who are ungrateful for what was given to Moses before. They said: Two kinds of sorcery, each helped one against the other. And they said: Truly, we disbelieve in all of it.
Say: Then, bring a Book from God that is better guided than these two that I follow it, if you had been ones who are sincere.

Messengers & Signs 

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِمْ فَجَاءُوهُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَانتَقَمْنَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And, certainly, We sent Messengers before thee to their own folk. They drew near them with the clear portents. Then, We requited those who sinned. And it had been an obligation on Us to help ones who believe.

The Bani Israel 


وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ فَلَا تَكُن فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِّن لِّقَائِهِ وَجَعَلْنَاهُ هُدًى لِّبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ

And, certainly, We gave Moses the Book. So be you not hesitant about meeting Him. And We assigned it as a guidance for the Children of Israel.
And We assigned leaders from among them to guide under Our command when they endured patiently. And they had been certain of Our signs.

حم
تَنزِيلٌ مِّنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
كِتَابٌ فُصِّلَتْ آيَاتُهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا فَأَعْرَضَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُونَ

مَّا يُقَالُ لَكَ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ قِيلَ لِلرُّسُلِ مِن قَبْلِكَ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو مَغْفِرَةٍ وَذُو عِقَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا أَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ آيَاتُهُ أَأَعْجَمِيٌّ وَعَرَبِيٌّ قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُولَٰئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ فَاخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَفِي شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ مُرِيبٍ
مَّنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فَعَلَيْهَا وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ كَفَرْتُم بِهِ مَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنْ هُوَ فِي شِقَاقٍ بَعِيدٍ
سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِ بِرَبِّكَ أَنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ
أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِّن لِّقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ أَلَا إِنَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُّحِيطٌ

Ḥā Mīm.
A sending down successively from The Merciful, The Compassionate,
a Book in which its signs were explained distinctly, an Arabic Recitation for a folk who know,
a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, but most of them turned aside so they hear not.
...
And those who are ungrateful said: Hear not this, the Quran, but talk idly about it while it is being recited so that perhaps you will prevail.
...
Nothing is said to thee but what, truly, was said to the Messengers before thee. Truly, thy Lord is, certainly, the Possessor of Forgiveness, and the Possessor of Painful Repayment.
And if We made this a non-Arabic Recitation, they would have said: Why were His signs not explained distinctly: A non-Arab tongue and an Arab! Say: It is a guidance for those who believe and a healing. And as for those who believed not, there is a heaviness in their ears and blindness in their hearts. Those are given notice from a far place.
And, certainly, We gave Moses the Book. Then, they were at variance about it. And if it were not for a Word that had preceded from thy Lord, it would have been decided between them. But, truly, they are in uncertainty, ones in grave doubt about it.
Whoever did as one in accord with morality, it is for himself. And whoever did evil, it is against himself, and thy Lord is not unjust to His servants.

Say: Considered you that even though it had been from God, again, you were ungrateful for it. Who is one who goes more astray than he who is in wide breach?
We will cause them to see Our signs on the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is The Truth. Suffices not thy Lord that, truly, He is Witness over all things?
They are hesitant about the meeting with their Lord. Truly, He is who One Who Encloses everything.

Entrusted with The Torah


مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوْرَاةَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَحْمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ الْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًا بِئْسَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

The parable of those who were entrusted with the Torah, and, again, carries it not is as the parable of a donkey who carries writings. Miserable was the parable of a folk who denied the signs of God! And God guides not the folk, the ones who are unjust.

The Guarded Tablet 



هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْجُنُودِ
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي تَكْذِيبٍ
وَاللَّهُ مِن وَرَائِهِم مُّحِيطٌ
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْآنٌ مَّجِيدٌ
فِي لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍ

Approached thee the discourse of the armies
of Pharaoh and of Thamud?
Nay! Those who were ungrateful are belying
and God is One Who Encloses them from behind.
Nay! It is a glorious Recitation
inscribed on the Guarded Tablet.

Non-Living & Living

Abstract 
Non-living and living are states of being! Our Ever-Living Creator has created these alternate states of existence. We exist in death as much as we exist in life. 



Full Text 


كَيْفَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَكُنتُمْ أَمْوَاتًا فَأَحْيَاكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

How can you refuse to acknowledge God, seeing that you were lifeless and He gave you life, and that He will cause you to die and then will bring you again to life, whereupon unto Him you will be brought back?
[Al-Quran 2:28, Translation: Muhammad Asad]

Scientists classify things into living and non-living things. Rather, non-living and living are states of being! Our Ever-Living Creator has created these alternate states of existence. 

In Surah al-Mulk, the purpose of these alternate states of existence is explained: 

تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ

Blessed is Causes to flourish He in Whose hand is the kingdom, and He has power over all things,
Who created death and life that He may try you-- which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving,

Death is a creation as much as Life is a creation. Life has been given for the purpose of testing... 

We exist in death as much as we exist in life. However, in life, a person exists and can flourish, in different ways, and in varying degrees. This flourishing is in Allah's hand to whom belongs The Kingdom. Whenever Allah wills, he can decrease, cease and reverse the flourishing state to a state of slow decline, death and disintegration: 

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَهْلَكَنِيَ اللَّهُ وَمَن مَّعِيَ أَوْ رَحِمَنَا فَمَن يُجِيرُ الْكَافِرِينَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

قُلْ هُوَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ آمَنَّا بِهِ وَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِين

قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَصْبَحَ مَاؤُكُمْ غَوْرًا فَمَن يَأْتِيكُم بِمَاءٍ مَّعِينٍ

Say thou: bethink ye if Allah destroy me and those with me; or have mercy on us, who will protect the infidels from a torment afflictive?
Say thou: He is the Compassionate; in Him we have believed, and in Him we have put our trust. -And anon ye will know who it is that is in error manifest.
Say thou: bethink ye, were your water to be sunk away, who then could bring you water welling-up?

A major difference between non-living and living things is the welling-up of water inside each living cell which provides the medium for a living thing to exist, function and flourish! Dehydration leads to death, that is, transition into the non-living state. Death comes when decreed, and after death the body generally loses water and perishes. Though I've retained the word 'destroy' in the above translation, I think a clearer translation of (أَهْلَكَنِيَ) should be 'causes me to perish'.  


The Inhabitants of The Tombs  
The Quran is quite clear that humans are created from dust. Dust can and does exist is both non-living and living states. We were lifeless; we have been granted a temporal life, and we continue to exist in death as well. Surah al-Mumtahinah concludes thus: 

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ يَئِسُوا مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ كَمَا يَئِسَ الْكُفَّارُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْقُبُورِ

You who believe, do not patronize any folk whom God has become angry with; they despair of the Hereafter just as disbelievers despair of the inhabitants of tombs.

O you who believe! do not make friends with a people with whom Allah is wroth; indeed they despair of the hereafter as the unbelievers despair of those in tombs.

Believers do not take as allies those with whom God is angry. They have despaired of the Hereafter, as unbelievers despair of those buried in their graves.

The Barrier

لَعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ صَالِحًا فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ كَلَّا إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَائِلُهَا وَمِن وَرَائِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

Haply I may do good in that which I have left. By no means! it is a (mere) word that he speaks; and before them is a barrier until the day they are raised.
[Al-Quran 23:100, Translation: Safi Kaskas]  


There exists a barrier between the realms of the non-living and living, such that once this temporal life ends, the dead cannot return to this life. 


Communicating with the Non-Living 

وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَحْيَاءُ وَلَا الْأَمْوَاتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسْمِعُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَمَا أَنتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَّن فِي الْقُبُورِ

Neither are the living and the dead alike. Surely Allah makes whom He pleases hear, and you cannot make those hear who are in the graves.

The non-living and the living cannot communicate with each other. We humans cannot make the dead listen to what we want to say to them. Yet, Allah can make them listen! The non-living state is a state of existence! 


The Life

وَمَا هَٰذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ

And this life of the world is nothing but a sport and a play; and as for the next abode, that most surely is the life-- did they but know!

Clear Signs




قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ كَفَرْتُم بِهِ مَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنْ هُوَ فِي شِقَاقٍ بَعِيدٍ

سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِ بِرَبِّكَ أَنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ

أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِّن لِّقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ أَلَا إِنَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُّحِيطٌ


Say, "You see - if it is from Allah then you disbelieve in it, who (is) more astray than (one) who - he (is) in opposition far?"
Soon We will show them Our Signs in the horizons and in themselves their nafs until becomes clear to them, that it (is) the truth. Is (it) not sufficient concerning your Lord, that He (is) over all things a Witness?
Unquestionably, they (are) in doubt about (the) meeting (with) their Lord? Unquestionably, indeed, He (is) of all things encompassing.

l-Baru (الْبَرُّ)

 قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Say, "He (is) Allah, the One.
Allah, the Eternal, the Absolute.
Not He begets and not He is begotten.
And not is for Him equivalent any [one]."

Abstract
The meaning of الْبَرُّ according to the usage of the root bā rā rā (ب ر ر) across The Quran, building upon some prior learnings from The Bible and The Quran.

إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ

innā kunnā min qablu nadʿūhu innahu huwa l-baru l-raḥīmu
[Al-Quran 52:28; Transliteration]


The Quran quotes that the people of The Gardens will declare that Allah is الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ . The root bā rā rā (ب ر ر) is used across The Quran 32 times. It is used once to describe Allah. It is also used for land, and it is used for people in both verb and noun form.

When used for land (الْبَرِّ in Q5:96, Q6:59, Q6:63, Q6:97, Q10:22, Q17:67, Q17:68, Q17:70, Q27:63, Q29:65, Q30:41, Q31:32), it is generally contrasted with water bodies (الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ) which clarifies that it should mean land:

When used for people, the word is generally translated in shades of dutiful, righteous, good, ... even though other words in Arabic are also similarly translated, such as words formed with the roots: wāw qāf yā (و ق ي) || ṣād lām ḥā (ص ل ح) || ṭā yā bā (ط ي ب).

Like land, we know that we humans are made from dust. The Quran encourages us to attain al-birr (الْبِرَّ), while it also quotes a prayer to grant us death among the الْأَبْرَارِ :

رَّبَّنَا إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي لِلْإِيمَانِ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِرَبِّكُمْ فَآمَنَّا 

رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ

Our Lord, indeed we [we] heard a caller calling to the faith that "Believe in your Lord," so we have believed. 
Our Lord so forgive for us our sins and remove from us سَيِّئَاتِنَا, and cause us to die with the الْأَبْرَارِ.

May Allah accept this prayer from us, bless us, and make us one of the الْأَبْرَارِ. Aameen.

Forgiving of our sins (ذُنُوبَنَا) and removal of its consequences (سَيِّئَاتِنَا) from us seems to be a prerequisite to die as one of the الْأَبْرَارِ . Does then becoming الْأَبْرَارِ mean that we, who are made of dust, becomes pristine and absolutely flawless?

The Quran repeatedly encourages spending for the sake of Allah (Q2:261 يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ) as a means of earning Allah's forgiveness (please read Q57).

Consider the following ayaat: 


لَّيْسَ الْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَلَٰكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالْكِتَابِ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ ذَوِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَامَىٰ وَالْمَسَاكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ وَالسَّائِلِينَ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ وَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَى الزَّكَاةَ وَالْمُوفُونَ بِعَهْدِهِمْ إِذَا عَاهَدُوا وَالصَّابِرِينَ فِي الْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ وَحِينَ الْبَأْسِ أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُتَّقُونَ

It is not [the] الْبِرَّ that you turn your faces towards the east and the west, [and] but الْبِرَّ (is he) who believes in Allah and the Day [the] Last, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Prophets, and gives the wealth in spite of his love (for it) (to) the near relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and (of) the wayfarer, and those who ask, and in freeing the necks (slaves) and (who) establish the prayer, and give the zakah, and those who fulfill their covenant when they make it; and those who are patient in [the] suffering and [the] hardship, and (the) time (of) [the] stress. Those (are) the ones who are true and those, [they] (are) الْمُتَّقُونَ.

لَن تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن شَيْءٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِهِ عَلِيمٌ

Never will you attain الْبِرَّ until you spend from what you love. And whatever you spend of a thing then indeed, Allah of it (is) All-Knowing
[Al-Quran 3:92]


So, by spending from what we love, if we are able to earn Allah's forgiveness and removal of the consequences of our sins (سَيِّئَاتِنَا), and thereby attain الْبِرَّ , then it means we can be reverted to the pristine condition, as we were when Allah created us? As our forefather Adam was before they ate from the forbidden tree? In Surah at-Tin, we read that:

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ

We have indeed created man in the best of moulds,
Then do We abase him (to be) the lowest of the low,-
Except such as believe and do righteous deeds: For they shall have a reward unfailing.

In Surah `Abasa, the word بَرَرَةٍ (same root as الْبَرُّ) is used to describe the scribes. Many translators translate this word as virtuous: 

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ
بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ
كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

By no means! Verily it is an admonition.
So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewith.
Inscribed in Writs honoured,"
Exalted, Purified,
By the hands of scribes.
Honourable and virtuous.

In Surah al-Maidah, we find virtue (الْبِرِّ) directly contrasted with sin (الْإِثْمِ):

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُحِلُّوا شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ وَلَا الشَّهْرَ الْحَرَامَ وَلَا الْهَدْيَ وَلَا الْقَلَائِدَ وَلَا آمِّينَ الْبَيْتَ الْحَرَامَ يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرِضْوَانًا وَإِذَا حَلَلْتُمْ فَاصْطَادُوا وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ أَن صَدُّوكُمْ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ أَن تَعْتَدُوا
  وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ

O ye who believe! profane not the landmarks of Allah nor any sacred month nor the offering nor the victims with the garlands nor those repairing to the Sacred House seeking the grace of their Lord and His goodwill. And when ye have put off the state of sanctity, ye may chase. And let not the hatred against a people, because they kept you from the Sacred Mosque, incite you to trespass.
Assist each other to virtue and piety, and assist not each other to sin and transgression,
Fear Allah: verily Allah is Severe in chastising.

As discussed in The Lord is my Rock, from Q24:35, we learn that Allah is also described as ... glass like a brilliant planet ... (... الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ ...), a reading which is supported by The Bible which mentions The Rock. We know from many ayaat across The Quran that Allah is ar-Rahim, which is generally translated as The Most Merciful, root rā ḥā mīm (ر ح م).

So, I wonder if we should understand الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ as:

إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ
إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ

Indeed, we [we] used to before call Him. 
Indeed, He [He] (is) The Pristine Virtuous Land, the Most Merciful."
[Al-Quran 52:28]



The Quran questions: 

هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَأْتِيَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي ظُلَلٍ مِّنَ الْغَمَامِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَقُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرْجَعُ الْأُمُورُ

Are they waiting [except] that comes to them Allah in (the) shadows of [the] clouds, and the Angels, and is decreed the matter? And to Allah return (all) the matters.
