Al-Quran, Surah al-Kahf
26
Say, "Allah is most knowing of how long they remained. He has [knowledge of] the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. How Seeing is He and how Hearing! They have not besides Him any protector, and He shares not His legislation with anyone.
27
And recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changer of His words, and never will you find in other than Him a refuge
Allah beholds everyone, and hears every sound. Nobody and nothing is hidden from Him. He knows all that’s hidden in the heavens and the Earth.
The ability to listen that Allah has made for human beings is something we need to be grateful for, and express our gratitude by following what Allah has revealed.
Surah al-Kahf begins with a clear warning of terrible violence from near Him, and gives glad tidings to the believers who do acts of reform. It goes on to specifically warn the people who say that Allah has taken a son, to deter from saying it, stating that it’s a lie that comes out of their mouths, as it came from their forefathers’ mouth.
Towards the end, the Surah mentions the rejectors (kafireen) whose eyes were veiled from Allah’s remembrance, and they couldn’t even manage to (obediently) listen to it. Surah al-Kahf concludes with the warning to not associate anyone in Allah’s worship.
While we are still alive, and have the ability to listen, we need to actively choose to listen to the revelation from Allah, to learn from it, and to consequently do according to the guidance we receive from it.
The Prayer
The first story in Surah al-Kahf is of a few young men praying to Allah, seeking His Mercy.
Allah responded to their prayer, and protected them in a way that only Allah could.
The Covering of their Ears
The ears of the youth were covered, so they couldn’t hear anything while they lay in the cave for three hundred and nine years.
Hearing Restored
When they were raised, they could easily converse with each other, implying that their faculty of hearing was restored.
Link between Calculating Time and Hearing
When they were raised, they couldn’t tell how much time had elapsed. They had not aged either.
The ear consists of specialised organs for equilibrium, ageing record, and the ability to listen. It can hear sounds between twenty hertz to twenty thousand hertz approximately.
Allah informs us the exact time. He gives us the calculation in two different system: solar and lunar. The ayat informs us that He Knows all that’s hidden, and He Beholds, and He Hears.
Follow the Revelation
The next ayat directs to (وَاتْلُ), generally translated as ‘and recite’, but actually means ‘and follow’, from the revealed scripture, as nobody cannot change His Words. Thus, it implies closely listening to the guidance for it to be followed.
On Hearing Disbelief
When the arrogant owner of two flourishing gardens was boasting, and expressing his disbelief in establishment of The Hour, and that if at all he would be returned to His Lord, he expected even better, his companion countered his disbelief with logical, irrefutable statements about his own stages of creation, and clearly declaring that Allah is his Lord, and he does not associate anyone with Him.
He also asked him why, on entering his garden, he didn’t state the fact: as willed Allah (مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ), there is no power except with Allah ( لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ).
He also warned him of a reckoning that may come from the Sky, or his water may simply disappear, which would mean an end to the gardens he thought would never perish.
The Command to Prostrate to Adam
When the angels were told to prostrate to Adam, they all prostrated, except Iblis. He was from the jinn, so he defiantly disobeyed his Lord.
No Response to Prayers
The Day when they will be asked to call those whom they associate with Allah, they will receive no response to their prayers.
Messengers’ Message
The Messengers have been sent to deliver good news and warnings; yet the disbelievers argue with falsehood to destroy the truth, and take Allah’s signs, and the warning in jest.
The Avoidance & The Covers on the Ears
Who is more in the wrong (literally: more in the dark) than one who when reminded of the signs of His Lord, avoids them, and forgets the deeds he has sent forth with both his hands? Such a person’s heart is veiled from the legal understanding, and in their ears is deafness to the call to guidance, therefore they are never able to heed to the guidance.
Statements & Declarations
To Forget to Mention: In Moses’ story, he first declares that he will go on searching till he finds the place, and the person he is looking for. When his boy forgets to mention the strange disappearance of the fish at the place, he attributes the forgetfulness to Satan.
To Forget to Keep your Word: Moses promised to be patient, and not ask questions. Yet, exclamations burst forth in all three situations.
The Explanations: Finally, that servant of Allah related to Moses the rationale of the three situations he could not be patient about.
Responding to Questions
When responding to the question about Dhil Qarnayn, the answer highlights the power given to him, and how he used it to punish the criminals, provide ease to the good, and contain corrupting nations to help restore law and order in a foreign country, seeking nothing in return for his services, and giving due credit to Allah and His Mercy.
The informations that are relevant are provided, while irrelevant details are not mentioned.
The Prophecy
The return of Yajuj Majuj was prophesied then, and now we find it in The Quran. We need to listen attentively to the prophecies.
To Remember & To Hear
The disbelievers in the hereafter are unable to even hear. Their hearts were veiled from Allah’s remembrance in this life, and thus they couldn’t hear the guidance.
To Reject & To Jest
The disbelievers in the meeting with Allah reject the ayaat of Allah, and take Allah’s Messengers in jest.
To reject the ayaat implies that they refuse to hear.
To take in jest implies that Messengers came to them with the ayaat.
To Believe & To Act
Those who believe and do acts of reform are promised Gardens of Paradise.
To believe implies listening attentively.
The Revelation
The Messenger received The Revelation. He heard and he recited what was revealed to him.

Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.
